ARTE 302 – Delacruz

Gude Synopsis

Curricular approaches:

Themes based on students’ personal lives, experiences, and their

community

Diverse contemporary art making that is not fixated on vocabulary and

principles

Investigational, research-based art that brings new visual and

conceptual insights

Empowered experiencing/empowered making

Principles:

Appropriation: using materials as the stuff out of which the art piece
is composed, using recycled imagery

Juxtaposition: creating clashing or random effects by using images

and objects from “various realms and sensibilities”

Recontexualization: repositioning images in unfamiliar contexts to

give it new meaning

Hybridity: cultural and media blending in art making, “using whatever

is required to fully investigate the subject”

Layering: used to create increasing complex and layered imagery

Interaction of text and image: interplay between the elements that

bolster each others’ message, create new associations, or a disparity
between the two

Gazing: considering, questioning, and deconstructing the perceptions

of the artist and audience

Representin’: creating one’s identity artistically through experience

and culture
Lesson Plan Ideas

1. Students are to take a heated issue (abortion, same-sex marriage, school

prayer, gun control, capital punishment, etc.) and create artworks that
display both sides of the debate, with equally powerful imagery with or
without text. Students are to research both objective sources, as well as the
perspective arguments for each individual side. The purpose is to expose
students to the visual tactics used by people to persuade, as well the
realities and complexities of various issues. The medium/media used is open
ended.

2. Students are to create an origami book, which is composed of eight

“panels” on a sheet of paper. This type of division allows for various visual
setups, as well as three-dimensional opportunities. Students are to create an
image on one and/or both sides that can be viewed individually panel-by-
panel, and as a whole, with emphasis on playing with imagery, and
recontexualization.

3. Students are to satirize a social issue or injustice by creating an

advertisement using image with text. They can choose whether to use the
text to bolster the image, or create a conceptual juxtaposition that reveals
the audience’s prejudices and preconceptions. Other mediums may include
billboards and commercials.

4. Students are to create a flag or emblem that represents them, and their
personal experiences. By choosing specific symbols, as well as using colors,
patterns, layering, and text, they are to visually express their identity based
on their experiences, culture, background, interests, etc.)
