Rating - Information may be found on

the nameplate of the motor etc.
Service Factor - When selecting a
coupling it is important to consider the
characteristics of the drive and driven
equipment. A figure known as the Service
Factor has been calculated based on an
average of a wide range of applications.
This can be used as a guide in the selection
process and is displayed in Table 1 on
page 2.

Should full information not be supplied

to Bibby Transmissions at the time of
ordering it will be the responsibility of
the customer to ensure that the coupling
has been correctly selected.
As our policy is one of continual
improvement, this specification is not to
be regarded as binding in any way, and is
subject to alteration without notice.
Certified drawings are available on
request.

Size - In making the selection from the

following product groups which is most
suited to the application, select a size
equal to or, higher than the rating
calculated. Particular attention should be
made to bore sizes and guidance for this
is in the Table related to Max Bore Sizes.
Speed - Ensure that the speed is
compatible.

Bibby Transmissions Taper Grid Resilient Couplings

Series 2000H and Series 2000V

Dr James Bibby originally invented the

Resilient Coupling in 1917 and the 2000
series is the latest version of this well
accepted product. This Bibby Transmissions
product has become universally accepted
where reliable protection against shaft
misalignment and vibration is desirable.
Since those early days refinements in
design and material specifications have
kept pace with advancing technology,
achieving significant improvements in
power/weight ratios.

High Performance
The Bibby Transmissions Series 2000 Taper
Grid Coupling continues that tradition.
The tapered grid is made from high
tensile alloy steel which is carefully
formed to the grid shape before
hardening and tempering under
controlled conditions. The grid surface is
then shot-peened. This process leaves the
grid spring with a residually stressed
surface layer which is in compression and
which impedes the propagation of cracks.
Since nearly all fatigue and stress
corrosion failures originate at the surface
of a part, the layer of compressive stress
induced by shot-peening produces a
dramatic increase in the working life and
fatigue strength of the grid. This
technological improvement in
manufacturing process coupled with
precise monitoring of raw material
specification and control of trapezoidal
shape, permits Bibby Transmissions to
offer state of the art grid springs of high
performance and reliability.

conditions. The combination of tapered
grid and precision manufactured hub
provides a high performance transmission
arrangement which is easily assembled,
extremely capable of cushioning shock
loads tolerant of drive misalignments.
Long Life
While the coupling is designed for long
life under arduous conditions,
maintenance and taper grid replacement
can be performed quickly and easily
without the need to move and realign
connected equipment.

should be provided by set screws. Relative

sizes and positions are given in the
following table.
For sizes above 2090T or where interference
fits are preferred for smaller coupling
sizes, bore tolerances should provide an
interference fit between shaft and hub of
0.0002 to 0.0007mm per mm of diameter,
consistent with AGMA standards.

Principle
Positive protection against the damaging
effects of shock loads, impact loads and
vibration.
The Series 2000 is torsionally flexible.
The circumferential flexibility is progressive
due to the curved profile of the grooves state-of-the-art in resilient coupling
design.

Light load

Normal load

Shock load

Accommodating Shaft Misalignment

and End-Float
The Series 2000 will accommodate
combinations of misalignments present at
set-up or occurring during machine
displacement, settlement etc.
Effectiveness of Torsional Damping
As the Series 2000 coupling transmits
torque, the flexing of the tapered grid
spring de-tunes vibrations and cushions
shock loads.

powerful de-tuning action is produced

which continuously alters the natural
frequency of the system and prevents a
build-up of resonance in the system. The
resultant reduction in peak loading
protects and extends the life of the
transmission equipment.
Versatile Design

Transmission shock
with Bibby coupling

Both 2000H and 2000V couplings feature

identical hubs and grid springs, the
different cover styles endowing the units
with great versatility - one is horizontally
split, the other is vertically split.

End-Float

The stock coupling can be used vertically

or horizontally without modification.
Easy Installation and Maintenance
The grid springs are easily installed by
hand or with a soft mallet. The cover
fasteners can be tightened with standard
wrenches. Every Bibby Transmissions
Series 2000 coupling is delivered with
detailed installation instructions.

All coupling components are designed to

be interchangeable with other popular
taper grid couplings available in North
America.

Periodic lubrication of the coupling is

required and each cover half is supplied
with standard plugs which can be easily
removed for re-lubrication. Extended
lubrication periods and enhanced
coupling life can be achieved by using
high performance lubricants referred to
in the maintenance instructions.

1. Nominal Torque (simple selection method)

2. Nominal Torque (formula method)

3. Peak Torque (formula method)*

A 4 cyl. diesel engine driven generator set

of 280 kW runs at 1000 rpm. Output and
input shafts are identical being 90mm dia
x 130mm long. A Bibby type TH,
horizontally split, coupling is specified for
ease of assembly.

An electric motor of 300 kW is to be

coupled to drive a rotary screw
compressor at 1000 rpm. Motor shaft is
85mm dia x 110mm long. Compressor
shaft 75mm x 100mm long. A Bibby type
TV, vertically split, coupling is required.

- The service factor from page 2 must be

included
Table 1 = 1.0: Additional factor (engine)
from Table 1A = 1.0: Total = 2.0

- From Table 1 service factor = 1.0.

Calculate torque:-Nm =
Transmitted kW x SF x (9550/rpm) =
300 x 1 x (9550/1000) 2867 Nm.

An extruder drive running at 300 rpm has

a known peak torque of 11000 Nm. The
connected shafts are each 120mm dia x
160mm long. Select a Bibby type TH,
horizontally split, coupling to suit the
known peak unidirectional torque of 11000
Nm. From the table on page 6, coupling
2120 has torque exceeding calculated
peak torque. Coupling max rpm is 2025.
Max bore 137mm is greater than shaft
diameter. Overall length is satisfactory.

- From Table 1A (SF = 2):

equivalent: kW = 560

- From the table on page 7, coupling

2090 has rating in excess of
required torque.
Max rpm = 4000;
Max bore 95mm; bore length 98.4mm
make the 2090 selection satisfactory.

10
0

This unique characteristic is due to the

torsional flexibility of the coupling being
proportionate to the unsupported length
of each flexible grid rung. Since this
varies with every variation of torque, a

Selection Examples

- From Table on page 6, coupling to

transmit 560 kW @ 1000 rpm = 2100
- From Table on page 6, allowable speed
for 2100T = 2440 rpm Max bore and
overall dimensions are satisfactory.

*1. The system peak torque is the

maximum load created by the driving
or driven equipment.
2. Occasional peak torques of twice the
catalogue rating can be accommodated
providing they occur less than 1000
times during the life of the coupling.

Range of Couplings

Bibby Transmissions Gear Couplings

The standard range of Bibbygear Series II

couplings includes single and double
engagement types, continuous sleeve,
telescopic and rigid designs. Couplings
suitable for vertical, as well as horizontal
operation may be selected from this section.
Bibby Transmissions Gear Couplings have
been proved over many years of use
internationally, in all kinds of industrial
environments. This reliability has been
achieved by our attention to detail in
design, applications expertise and stringent
quality control.
The latest development of Bibby
Transmissions Gear Couplings family, the
Bibbygear Series II, offers improvements,
refinements and extensions to the range,
further consolidating the Status of Bibby
Transmissions at the forefront of Gear
Coupling design and manufacture.

BIBBY Transmissions

Series II Gear Couplings

Torque Control can be incorporated into

all Bibbygear Series II couplings. A
particularly efficient method is to
combine the gear couplings with SE
Torque Limiting Modules, which provide
immediate disconnection of the drive
when the torque in the drive system
exceeds these SE Torque Limiting Safety
Modules pre-set values. Re-setting is
quick and simple.

Spares and Replacements

Bibby Transmissions hold file records of all
Bibbygear Series II couplings as part of
our Customer Quality Assurance Program.
When ordering spare and replacement
parts please quote the Serial Number
stamped on the coupling, together with
any other relevant information.

Shear pins can also be incorporated with

gear coupling assemblies to provide
overload protection.
Brake Drum and Brake Disc designs can
be supplied if required.
Other special couplings include assemblies
which will accommodate High
Misalignment; Bibby Transmissions also
supply Disengaging types and Insulated
gear couplings.
To ensure the gear couplings meet your
most exacting requirements, please
discuss the specification and design with
Bibby Transmissions.

Increased bore capacities

Ease of assembly

Versatility

A major benefit of the Bibbygear Series II

Gear Coupling is the considerable
increase in maximum bore capacities that
can now be offered. It should be noted,
however, that the maximum bores
specified throughout this publication are
based on keyways to BS 4235. Should
alternative keyways or Imperial Standards
be required, allowance needs to be made
to ensure that the strength of the
coupling hub is not compromised.

Bibbygear Series II Gear Couplings

incorporate exposed bolts and captive
nuts for ease of assembly. Careful design
has resulted in a space efficient bolt
installation which enables the couplings
to offer increased bore capacities whilst
ensuring sufficient hub/bore ratio to cater
adequately to the transmitted torque. In
this manner the most compact coupling
installation for the required power rating
is achieved.

The standard range of gear couplings

includes a number which are suitable for
mounting vertically as well as
horizontally.

High torque capacity/weight ratio

Fully interchangeable

By optimizing the pitch circle diameter of

the gear teeth and incorporating
carefully chosen material specifications,
Bibby Transmissions Gear Couplings offer
a high torque capacity to weight ratio
resulting in lower loads on driving and
driven shafts.

The Series II Gear Couplings observe the

AGMA standard flange dimensions. This
results in a half-for-half
interchangeability with other north
American manufacturers.

Longer hubs
Crowned hub teeth
Advanced CAD analysis, combined with
many years of applications experience,
has enabled our designers to further
refine the tooth form of Bibby
Transmissions Gear Couplings in order to
ensure maximum contact at the strongest
part of the tooth. Hub teeth are
engineered with tooth form crowned on
three surfaces: tip, flank and root. A high
degree of shaft misalignment can be
accommodated.
Some coupling sizes also feature long
sleeve teeth as standard. This allows
greater axial movement with standard
components.

The advanced design of these Bibbygear

Series II Couplings permits the
incorporation of longer hubs, for those
instances where greater shaft/hub contact
is required or where mill motors are the
driving medium.

To vary the shaft end gap and control

limited end float, one or both hubs can
be reversed. To facilitate this feature the
hub diameters on either side of the teeth
are identical.

Series II Gear Couplings

BIBBY Transmissions

Bibby Transmissions Gear Couplings

Bibbygear Series II couplings can be

combined with Bibbigard Torque Limiting
Modules. These self-contained assemblies
are fitted between two halves of a
standard coupling. Full details will be
supplied on request.

Special manufacture
Bibby Transmissions are able to supply
components such as hubs and sleeves, and
complete Gear Coupling assemblies,
specially manufactured to suit specific
applications.
There are circumstances in which this
provides a more cost-effective method of
solving specific application requirements.
Please consult a member of our Sales staff
to discuss your individual application.

Standard and special materials

The high specification gear couplings in
the Bibbygear Series II range are
manufactured from high quality carbon
steels as standard.
To suit specific applications Bibby
Transmissions can supply gear couplings in
a variety of specialised materials.

Most standard couplings can also be

stock-altered to customers requirements
This includes parallel or taper boring and
keywaying, puller holes, shortened hubs
etc. These changes are available with
minimal increases in costs or lead times.

Bibbygear Series II Couplings are able to

withstand a wide temperature range.
Extended range
Bibby Transmissions can supply gear
couplings in various forms. Most standard
couplings are fully detailed in the
following pages. However, certain
modifications are available which are not
detailed. These include limited end float,
insulated, integrated shear pins, torque
control, brake drums and brake discs.
The long established reputation of Bibby
Transmissions Gear Couplings now
extends to include continuous sleeve,
telescopic and rigid designs, and bore
capacities up to 20 inches.

The maximum operating limit is

125C /257F due to the specific seals and
lubricant used in the standard coupling,
However, by selective changes to material
this can be increased.
Minimum temperatures are limited by the
application and the degree of shock
loading that may occur.
Full details of the anticipated working
temperature range should be supplied to
enable Bibby Transmissions engineers to
advise.

Application

Misalignment

Couplings with standard hub lengths

require fitting with keys through the full
hub length, and an interference fit on
shaft is necessary particularly when the
coupling is transmitting the maximum
rated power. Unless otherwise specified,
these hubs would be bored to give an
interference of between 0.0002 and
0.0007mm per millimetre of bore
diameter, consistent with AGMA
standards.

Bibbygear Series II Double Engagement

Gear Couplings are designed to
accommodate parallel and angular
misalignment and axial movement as
illustrated above.

Couplings with extended hub lengths are

generally intended for use where
transition fits on shafts are preferred, and
unless otherwise specified, such couplings
would be bored to H7 tolerances. In these
instances axial restraint of the hub should
be provided by set screws.

While some sizes of Bibbygear Series II

Gear Couplings are capable of static
misalignment of up to 11/2 per gear mesh
it is recommended that all couplings be
aligned, on initial installation, to the
limits contained in the Installation and
Maintenance leaflet supplied with each
coupling.

Couplings transmitting the maximum

rated capacity, particularly where
relatively small shafts are being used,
often require 2 keys. This is more relevant
with larger sizes of couplings and, if in
doubt, full details should be supplied to
allow Bibby Transmissions engineers to
advise.
For all couplings, maximum bores are for
uniformly loaded drives only, using
rectangular parallel keys to
BS 4235 Part 1: 1972, or DIN 6885,
sheet 1, 1968. Taper and Square keys
should not be used with a hub to bore
ratio of less than 1.5 : 1.

Single engagement couplings

accommodate only angular misalignment
and axial movement.
Limited End Float couplings can also be
provided.

Care should be taken to ensure that

misalignment during operation is kept to
an absolute minimum, as excesses will
cause wear of the product together with
high loading on associated machinery.
This will have a great influence on the life
of the product.

The maximum speeds specified above are

generally based on the limit of the
lubricant being used. To attain these
speeds a separate balance operation may
be necessary depending on the
requirements of the application. Special
couplings can be supplied for higher
speeds or more sensitive applications.

Maximum bores specified are for

uniformly loaded drives only. See table 2
on page 3 for factors to apply when other
than uniform loads are applied.

All dimensions are subject to

confirmation. General arrangement
drawings are available which show
certified dimensions.

Puller holes can be supplied.

Hubs are available with longer boss
lengths.

Mass and Inertia are based on solid hubs.

All Inertia figures are MR2.

These assemblies would normally be

supplied as shown although couplings can
be reversed if a greater degree of parallel
offset is required. Installation as shown
gives the best combination of available

All floating shaft couplings can be modified

for vertical operation. This does not affect
any external dimensions. If both connecting
shafts are located, a thrust plate and button
(see page 23) are fitted to the lower
coupling. The weight of the shaft and
associated hubs can be borne by the lower
shaft. Extra plates and buttons may be
needed if the upper shaft is not selfsupported.

Telescopic couplings are able to

accommodate movement of hubs relative to
each other while still transmitting the rated
capacity. Couplings still accept parallel offset
and angular misalignment but to a limited
degree.
The types illustrated are a selection of those
which can be offered. Should your axial
requirements exceed those specified, please
send details so that we can put forward
alternative proposals.
