these current signals through A/D converter. The Digital Signal performs powerful
Numerical Algorithms to find out RMS of fundamental & harmonic contents of the
current. All measurement is tuned to fundamental frequency i.e. 50Hz or 60Hz
depending upon setting, thus relay remain stable during distorted waveform by
various industrial load. All these measure values are then used for different
protection function such as IDMT Over current protection, Instantaneous Over
current protection, E/F protection etc. These measured values are also displayed
on large 16 x 2 LCD display for metering purpose. The power supply module is
special electronics circuit which derived relay power from current flowing through
line; no any external power supply is needed. The minimum requirement of current
to build power supply for relay electronics is 20% in any one of the phases or 12%
in any 2 phases or 8% in all three phases. Relay provides pulse output to trip
RMU or compact CB having low energy tripping coil.
A battery for feeding the LCD display and SCADA communication buffers the
relay. After tripping operation relay maintains fault indication on LCD display.
During this time, the relay uses power through internal battery. The relay can
maintain fault indication till the relay is manually reset by using + / key. Failure
of the battery has no effect on the protection function of the relay. The battery has
a service life of more than 5 years.
3.0 Protection Function: 3.1 Over Current / Earth Fault Protection: The relay has inverse time over current / earth fault function as well as
instantaneous protection for both. Following is summary of different protection
functions provided by relay.

Inverse1 (C1), Normally Inverse2 (C2), Very Inverse (C3), Extremely Inverse (C4),
Long Time Inverse (C5) and defines time (C6). The unit also has Time Multiplier
Setting (TMS) from x0.01 to x1.2 in steps of x0.01 (separate for phase and EF) for
IDMT delay multiplication. Separate operating curve can be programmed for
phase and EF. The instantaneous tripping function has range of 50% - 3200% in
steps of 50% for phase and 50% - 1200% in steps of 50% for earth fault. The high
speed CPU continuously monitors all four current inputs and compares with IDMT
as well as instantaneous setting. If anyone current is above instantaneous setting,
the relay provides immediate trip command bypassing IDMT delay.
If input current is less than instantaneous setting but more than IDMT setting, CPU
calculates IDMT delay as per selected IDMT characteristic, multiplies it with TMS
setting and issue trip command if fault is persist even after this time delay.
For EF tripping, there must be current greater than or equal to 20% of the rated
current in any one phase of the relay.
3.2 3 Phase Over Load Function: The relay is having the overload function for the phases. The setting range for the
3 phase overload is 10 200 % in steps of 1% and the time delay is settable form
1s to 30000 secs in steps of 1 sec.
Please note: relay will operates on 10% only when the current flowing through all
the 3 CTs is around 7-8 % of the rated.
Following are some of the cases where we can use the overload function:

When connected distribution transformer is of very low KVA rating:

For example:
Transformer Rating: 100KVA
Transformer Voltage: 11 / 0.440 KV
Rated load at 11KV side: 5A
Connected C.T. Ratio: 40/1 A
As the rated load is very low i.e. 12% of the CT and the setting for IDMT over
current is available from 20%, so we can set the overload setting for 10% and the
time delay at the required value i.e. from 1s to 30000 secs and the IDMT setting at
require value. Hence we can able trip the transformer by using overload function
after desired set time.

Protection Relay ADR 241S

Ref.: ADR241S_V_06_SD
Rev.: 06 Dt. 10.01.2013

When connected distribution transformer is of normal KVA rating:

For example:
Transformer Rating: 1000KVA
Transformer Voltage: 11 / 0.440 KV
Rated load at 11KV side: 52A
Connected C.T. Ratio: 80/1 A
In above case the rated load is 65%, so we can set the overload setting at 65%
and the time delay for the overload at require value between 1s to 30000secs. The
IDMT over current setting can be set at 70% and the IDMT delay as per the
requirement.
Thus we can allow the overload of 65% for the allowable time and if the overload
persists after the set overload time the transformer will get tripped with the
overload. The normal IDMT over current & EF protection can be taken care By
Ip>, IE> & the IDMT settings.
3.3 Cold load pick-up Function:
The relay is having special cold load pick-up function to avoid tripping due to
prolong inrush current. The setting range is given same as the normal protection
setting with additional cold load time delay settable from 0.01 to 10.0 secs.
Cold load pick-up function can use to avoid tripping during switching ON C.B. and
position of C.B. can be watched by connecting its auxiliary contact C.B. NO to
dedicated Digital input S1 of Relay.
As per observation normally in distribution system and as per gradation
Instantaneous setting and Ip> TMS required to set very low and due to this relay
can operate during switching on C.B.
In ADR241S Instantaneous elements have inrush blocking function during
switching on condition of CB but relay can operate in IDMT if inrush current flow
for sufficient time to operate relay as per TMS setting.
To avoid such condition Cold Load Pick-up can use in which we can set cold load
setting higher than regular protection setting for selected definite time delay Cold
Load Timer. As Clod Load Timer is finish relay will switch over to normal
Protection Setting.
If we are switching C.B. on fault condition relay will still provide protection as it can

operate when fault current is more than cold load setting and same can be
identified as in fault history CLT trip will appear in SF (status flag).
Following are some examples for getting the idea of cold load pick-up:

Case 1: (Current peak is high in amplitude and small in duration) Inrush current
peak is 9 times of the rated CT for the duration of 0.5 s in R, Y & B
With above setting as CB switch ON the S1 digital input will also in ON
condition, cold load setting will comes in picture for selected delay 0.5 Sec.
As our peak current is 9A, the instantaneous element will not operate (as per
the setting it is set at 10A).
As per the over current setting in cold load Ip> = 100% & Ip> TMS = 0.15,
Operating time will be as per the Formula:
T= (0.14*0.15)/ ((9^0.02)-1)
= 0.467 Sec.
As peak current is for 0.5 Sec. and the calculated time in cold load is 0.4675s
relay will operate in Cold Load. In such case we have to increase the TMS
setting in cold load.

Case 2: (Current peak is high in amplitude and high in duration) Inrush current
peak is 7 times of the rated CT for the duration of 0.6 s in R, Y & B.
As our peak current is 7A, the instantaneous element will not operate (as per
the setting it is set at 10A) in this case also.
As per the over current setting in cold load Ip> = 100% & Ip> TMS = 0.15,
Operating time will be as per the Formula:
T= (0.14*0.15)/ ((7^0.02)-1)
= 0.529 Sec.
As per the above calculation of IDMT delay of the cold load settings the
calculated delay is less than the duration of peak current ,but the set cold load
delay is set at 0.5s (Less than the calculated delay) the relay will not operate
with cold load. After 0.5s it will switch to the Protection Settings. The operating
time as per IDMT for the protection setting will be:
T= (0.14*0.05)/ ((7^0.02)-1)
= 0.176 Sec.
By adding the above calculated delay in the cold load delay the operating time
will be: 0.5s + 0.176s = 0.676s (This is more than the peak duration). But the
Ip>> setting is 300 %( less than the current peak) and the IP>> Delay is 0.05s,
the relay will operate with HF in protection settings within 50 ms time delay (as
the peak duration is more than the calculated time i.e. 0.5s + 0.05s = 0.55s). In
such case we will have to increase the cold load delay.
Case 3: (Current peak is low in amplitude and high in duration) Inrush current
peak is 2.2 times of the rated CT for the duration of 1 s in R, Y & B.
As our peak current is 2.2A, the instantaneous element will not operate (as per
the setting it is set at 10A) in this case also.
As per the over current setting in cold load Ip> = 100% & Ip> TMS = 0.15,
Operating time will be as per the Formula:
T= (0.14*0.15)/ ((2.2^0.02)-1)
= 1.321 Sec.
As per the above calculation of IDMT delay in the cold load settings the
calculated delay is more than the duration of peak current ,but the set cold load
delay is set at 0.5s (less than the calculated delay) the relay will not operate
with cold load. After 0.5s it will switch to the Relay Settings. The operating time

for the protection setting will be:

T= (0.14*0.05)/ ((2.2^0.02)-1)
= 0.440 Sec.
By adding the above calculated delay in the cold load delay the total operating
time will be: 0.5s + 0.440s = 0.940s (This is less than the peak duration). Due to
this the relay will operate with protection setting. In this case we have to increase
the cold load timer or I>p TMS in the protection setting.
4.0 Measurements and Communication Function: In normal condition the relay displays all the current values. Using the front
keyboard the display can be programmed to show settings. If current is in fault
range the relay gives trip command. The type of the fault is displayed on LCD
display. During the fault condition, the relay measures the fault current and stores
it in non-volatile memory. The fault current can be read using keyboard on LCD
display. All settings can be done locally as well as remotely via communication
port and saved in non-volatile memory.
5.0 Impulse Output for Tripping Coil: Low Energy tripping coil of the circuit breaker can be connected to the coil terminal
marked as (COIL + and ) at back terminal. The trip energy (12 - 24 V DC 0.1
W/sec) is provided by a capacitor in the protection relay. Length of the trip impulse
is 40ms and pause between the individual pulses depends on the impedance of
the tripping coil and the current level. Pulsing is continued until the CB operates
and fault current become zero.
6.0 Supervisory Function: The relay continuously keeps track on its internal hardware and the moment it
detects any failure of component, a message is displayed on LCD display. The
type of error can be checked by Error Log menu. This feature is very useful for
giving pre information to avoid mal operation.
7.0 Electrical Noise Immunity: Utility and industrial environments are electrically very noisy. Electronics protection
equipment requires careful design and testing to ensure reliable operation in
switchgear. Ashida has applied its expertise and more than 35 years of experience
in field of electronics design to ensure that the ADR241S operates when required,
without nuisance trips. Thanks to the latest micro-controller technology.

8.0 Inrush Blocking:

During switching of load the load take sudden surge of magnetising inrush current.
The ordinary protection may sense this current as fault current and give wrong
tripping. The ADR241S relay has a special feature of inrush current blocking. The
relay detects inrush current then block instantaneous element tripping accordingly.
9.0 Current transformers Requirement: The ADR241S relay is self power numerical relay and derived all power required
for it internal operation as well as for it CB operation is derived from external CT.
The proper operation it necessary to select proper rated CT.
The Impedance to current characteristic of ADR241S is as shown in fig. The graph
is non linear, i.e. at low current Z of CT input is high while at high current it low.

10.0 Setting Reliability: Any numerical or digital relay in which all settings are programmable via key board
or communication port, use some internal memory to store these settings. Many
relays use internal rechargeable batteries to maintain these settings. In case of

power supply fluctuation, batteries are often unreliable, and settings get corrupted.
In such situation, the relay may mal- operate. Ashida use special non-volatile
memory technology, which do not require any power source to maintain settings of
the relay.
Once the relay is programmed, it maintains the settings for more than 10 years
even in the absence of any power supply. In case if internal fault is detected in this
section during the self diagnosis, then relay gives message.
11.0 On Line Testing: The ADR241S relays are provided with online testing facility. By pressing TEST
key (provided on front panel) the relay immediately provides trip command. This
trip command also gets extended to breaker coil, thus entire trip operation from
relay to circuit breaker can be checked. This trip command is recorded as T flag
on LCD display as shown below.

Troubleshooting Guide line:-

Relay is not getting powered up / no display on relay / display is not working :

Check the current flowing from the CT, it should be more than 20% of rated in any
one phases or more than 12 % in any two phases or more than 8% in all the
phases.
Relay is not getting powered up on battery :

1. Confirm that batteries are properly placed in battery socket.

2. Check the voltage of the batteries with digital multimeter; it should be more
than 3.2 V. If the batteries are proper and unused then it will be 4.5V.
Relay is not getting powered up at all (on load current nor on battery) :

Check all the above points and if all the things are ok but still it is not getting
ON then contact ASHIDA for the further rectification.
Trip not working / relay is not tripping :

1. Check the connections of tripping coil.

2. Check the TRIP BLOCK setting in General Settings Menu (for details please
refer Chapter No. 17 in this manual), Trip block should be in disable mode.
Latching type relay contacts are not working :

Check the External Relay Enable/disable settings in General Settings Menu

(for details refer chapter no 17.14). To operate the relay contacts External relay
should be in enable mode.
Relay Tripping with 3Ph overload :

1. Check the settings of 3Ph Overload & OL delay (refer Chapter No. 19).
2. If you want to bypass the 3ph overload function, set the 3ph overload setting
and 3ph OL delay at maximum position i.e. 200% & 30000s respectively.
Cold load trip function is not working properly :

1. Ensure that the CB NO contact is properly wired up at the CB NO status

input.
2. Check the settings of cold load (Refer chapter 3.3 and 21 for details).
Display showing error code 016 :
Set the date and time of the relay in general Settings Menu as per the current date &
time (refer Chapter no 17 in this Manual).
