Cummins next-generation
ISB6.7 engine for Euro 6.
The engine extends up
to 228 kW for truck and
coach installations, and
206 kW for bus applications. Peak torque for
the 6.7 L engine remains
at 1100 Nm.
ing module, which combines the water pump, oil filter and oil cooler. This
leads to improved pressure management and enhanced durability and robustness, Cummins said.
The company said the engine is approximately 10% lighter than the current model due to the changes, despite
the EGR and VGT technologies being added. Cummins added that the
design of the combustion makes the
engine quieter than the Euro 5 version.
The EPA 2010 technology of cooled
EGR with VGT has been tailored for a
four-cylinder product and European vehicle operations, said Cummins. It added that the EGR system is scaled for
this application and the Cummins VGT
has been optimized for higher torque
and lower speed capability, which provides performance and driveability improvements. A further benefit to European OEMs, said Cummins, is that it
allows the removal of the exhaust brake.
These systems are controlled by a
new ECM with increased capability for
controlling the engine and aftertreatment with more challenging onboard
diagnostic monitoring requirements.
A new aftertreament system is
installed on the ISB4.5 specifically
designed for Euro 6. It comes in a
switchback configuration for compact installations and is packaged
ready for OEMs to fit directly to the
chassis. Controlled by the ECM it
has a CPF with SCR, which uses
copper zeolite technology for high
conversion efficiency even at low
temperatures, said Cummins.
For medium-duty truck and bus
use, the near-zero levels of emissions
legislated at Euro 6 mean that the majority of manufacturers will no longer
have a choice of which technology to
adopt, Pattison. They will need to use
all of them. However, the way in which
OEMs balance these technologies in
their emissions recipe will have a major impact on the end product. dpi

globaltrends
n 2009, the effects of the global financial crisis of the previous year
were at their peak and the construction equipment market in Western
Europe collapsed to its lowest level
of sales for 22 years in the second of
two disastrous years for the industry. In
2010, demand staged a modest recovery of 17% and the positive trend continued in 2011, as the region showed
an increase of 23% to reach 123 455
units. Thats still 16% below the longterm average, but the weakness is
concentrated in the specific countries
Portugal, Italy, Ireland and Spain
that are in the headlines because of
their sovereign debt problems.
Each of those four problematic
countries has its own story of woe, but
a broad measure of their changed fortune is to see how their share of the
regions sales has changed. At their
height in 2006 they accounted for
31% of the regions sales. In 2011 that
had fallen to 12%.
Better news was the buoyant
growth in every other country. The
large volume markets of Germany
and France showed increases over
30% and the U.K. did nearly as well.
Benelux and Scandinavia came back
equally strongly. While there has been
evidence of a recovery in business
confidence in many European markets before autumn 2011, the shortto medium-term outlook for the sector
is still tempered with caution by suppliers. The difficulty is to evaluate the
effect of the financial turbulence evident in the Euro zone. Many are feeling that the recovery may now be over
and are reluctant to predict increases
in demand that would bring the market back to what might be described
as more normal levels.
On a positive note, there has been
renewed investment by rental companies and, in some cases, stabilization of manufacturers and dealers stock levels in the north and
center of the region. The tightening
of credit lines, however, remains a
feature of the industry and continues to act as a hindrance to a more
sustained recovery in sales of new
construction equipment.
Traditionally Europe has four dominant markets Germany, the U.K.,
France and Italy but the halving
of demand in Italy since 2008 means

The latest product from the Anhui
Quanchai Engine Co. Ltd. is the 4D22E
diesel engine, which is compliant with
the China 3 emissions standards
(equivalent to Euro 3). It has been
developed for vehicle applications, including pickups, light trucks, mini buses, SUVs and multipurpose vehicles.
The engine features a Bosch common rail fuel system, imported turbocharger and EGR technology. Development of the engine was a joint effort
between Anhui Quanchai, Elsbett of
Germany and the Shanghai Internal
Combustion Engine Research Institute.
The company said that by optimizing combustion, fuel efficiency has
been greatly improved. It added that
fuel consumption has been lowered
by more than 10% to 8.2 L per 100
km. Power has been increased by
30% while reliability is also enhanced,
Anhui Quanchai said.
The engine uses a thin-walled connecting rod cap, which has been grant24

Cummins said its QSB6.7 achieved
its highest power output up to 231 kW
and over 1000 Nm peak torque for EU
Stage 4 and U.S. EPA Tier 4 final emissions. The company said the QSB6.7
makes no performance compromises to
meet near-zero emissions, retaining the
faster engine response and reliability
proven by the current Stage 3b and Tier
4 interim engine.
To meet the 2014 near-zero emissions regulations the engine uses the
next-generation Cummins compact
catalyst and selective catalytic reduction (CCC-SCR) aftertreatment system.
The ultra-clean CCC-SCR aftertreatment system is specifically configured
for a compact and flexible equipment installation. The Cummins compact catalyst, currently used for Stage 3b and Tier
4 interim ratings below 130 kW, is significantly smaller than a particulate filter,
offering a substantial benefit for increasingly space-constrained equipment installations, the company reported.
At Stage 3b and Tier 4 interim, this
space-saving advantage has been especially important for four-cylinder engine applications, but looking ahead
to Stage 4 and Tier 4 final, the need to
minimize space moves beyond this to
the six-cylinder 6.7 and 9 L platforms,
according to Cummins.
Also for Stage 4 and Tier 4 final, the
Cummins QSX15 engine moves up to
503 kW for heavy-duty construction
applications. This is 56 kW above the
2011 Stage 3b and Tier 4 interim top
rating. The 15 L engine uses a nextgeneration ultra-clean aftertreatment
system, combining the Cummins parcontinued on page 26

Iveco and FPT Industrial announced
the new Euro 6 Cursor and Tector engine ranges for heavy-duty trucks and
buses, using FPTs SCR Only technology. The SCR Only aftertreatment
complies with the NOx limits with the
catalytic reduction system alone without EGR. FPT said that the SCR Only
system allows NOx reduction efficiencies in excess of 95%, reaching levels
very close to 100% under specific circumstances.
An efficient SCR system is mainly
achieved with the system management in which AdBlue dosing and
the thermal properties of the aftertreatment system are carefully and
precisely controlled. The SCR Only
system has new generation aftertreatment hardware as a result of research
activities by FPT Industrial, the company said.
The new generation Zeolite-based
compact SCR system integrates all
aftertreatment components in a single
box (DOC, DPF, SCR and clean-up
catalyst). The urea injection/mixing devices, as well as all exhaust gas sensors for the aftertreatment management are integrated in the same box.
The SCR Only technology has also
been approved for FPT Industrial construction and agricultural applications
without the integration of a DPF.
Also new at FPT Industrial is the integration of its new N67 500 marine
engine with the 2800 POD propulsion
drive system by ZF. The package allows
performances of a power-to-weight ratio
of 0.4 kW/km, a high specific maximum
torque of 228 Nm/L and a specific fuel
consumption of 216 g/kW-hr.

New Engines
Lombardini and Kohler presented
the new line of Kohler Direct Injection
(KDI) diesel engines. With three engine displacements 1.9, 2.5, 3.4 L
to be launched by the end of 2014,
the company is doubling its current
diesel power offering to 100 kW.
In the new KDI engines clean
combustion is achieved with a highpressure common rail system of the
latest generation, combined with an
electronically triggered EGR valve
that circulates the right amount of exhaust gases (which are liquid cooled
by a water/air heat exchanger) and
enables emissions levels to comply
with Stage 3b regulations without the
use of aftertreatment systems.
The common rail system is specifically designed for extreme durability
and resistance to the highly severe
conditions of operation that are typical of applications in the industrial and
construction sectors, Lombardini said.
The high-pressure pump operates at
2000 bar and this, combined with G3S
solenoid-type injectors, enables fuel
optimization during injection.
The electronic control unit that manages the common rail injection system
36
is also of the latest generation and provides total control of engine calibration
parameters. The CANbus system provides a direct communication interface
between the engine and the electronic
components associated with the specific application.
The KDI engines feature fourvalves per cylinder technology with
the injector in a perfectly vertical position at the very center of the combustion chamber. Lombardini said
that this solution optimizes fuel filling,
atomization and mixing with oxygen
in the chamber. Intake manifold and
combustion chamber were developed
with fluid-dynamic analysis for maximum combustion efficiency.

The engines are based on the familiar passenger car assemblies. Customers can select from three defined sizes
for diesel and natural gas engines. Seven modules supplement the engine to
make it suitable for mobile machines
such as forklift trucks, construction machinery and similar applications.
The manufacturer of the machinery
configures the engine from variants for
the exhaust system, air intake system,
fuel module, charge-air tracts and SAE
standard flange. Variable positions of an
electronic box as well as the choice between a static and electrical fan round
off the offerings. Using one standardized base, machinery in the future can
be equipped with diesel and natural gas
engines. Alterations will not have to be
made to the vehicle construction. In this
way, the manufacturers have both cost
and quality benefits through the use of
certified components.
The new engines have a DPF located close to the engine with a high
absorption rate and extended service
intervals, but are also downward com48

Volvo Penta introduced a 300 kW
version of the D6 engine, matched
with a refined DPH Duoprop drive. The
D6-400 engine is based on the design
of the IPS600 engine. Compared with
the current D6-370, the 400 version
has supercharging with a larger turbo
and a tuned mechanical compressor.
At 2000 r/min it reaches its maximum
torque of 970 Nm.
During 2011 Volvo Penta introduced its, bi-fueled 1 L diesel engine for power generation applications. The new TWD1663GE features
SCR to comply with the U.S. EPA
and CARB Tier 4 interim emissions
limits. The engine is based on the
TWD1643GE engine and feature twostage turbocharging. The power output for standby power applications is
up to 625 kWe. This output is designe
for generator manufacturers choosing to link multiple generator sets
together to offer 1.25, 1.875 and 2.5
MW power blocks to their customers.
The TWD1663GE is only available for
1800 r/min at 60 Hz operation.

300 to 450 kW. Maximum torque is
reached at 800 to 900 r/min. This
helps maneuvering, but is equally
important when towing at low speed,
using the power take-off, the company said.

nounced late last year that it had expanded operations in Brazil to package marine and oil and gas products
in its Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, facility. The packages are typically used
in offshore, inland waterways, tug and
salvage, and cargo applications.
The output of the packages ranges
from 1360 to 2250 ekW. Caterpillar
also said the RBNA Classification Society has certified the 3500C dieselelectric propulsion generator set pack
ages to meet local content regulations
in Brazil. RBNA, a division of ANP, certified that the 3500C products meet
in excess of 60% local content. More
specifically, the packages contain 64%
local content.
According to Luiz Carlos Calil, Caterpillar president in Brazil, this is an
important landmark for the manufacturing expansion in Brazil. In October
2011, we inaugurated a new plant in
Campo Largo, Paran state, and now
we are investing in increasing our capacity in the Piracicaba plant, starting
with the enlargement of the manufacturing of generators.
In 2001, Cat began production of
generator sets in Brazil, in Piracicaba.
In 2008, the company built a plant dedicated to this operation and in 2011 expanded to attend this new series. dpi

And this leads us to Euro 6, which
rolls toward the European marketplace
in January 2014. Euro 6 is, by any

Leaving aside Daimler and Scania,
both of which claim there will be little

most other observers seem to regard a fuel consumption penalty as almost inevitable. Tim Cattlin, of CAP, the

Indications from manufacturers
suggest that, due to the additional
cooling required, cab redesigns will
be necessitated and that the transactional price increase for a new vehicle
could run into five figures. This, coupled with the predicted increase in
fuel consumption, makes a new Euro

to the operator.

Reginato said the mechanical version of the 4.8P engine will be followed by an electronic version featuring Bosch common rail fuel injection
for emissions-regulated markets.
In addition, the 12 Series of Navistar
MaxxForce engines are being further
expanded with a new 3.1P model.
The launch of a version with mechanical fuel injection is planned for the
end of 2012, said Reginato. While an
electronic fuel injection model is due
to follow after that.
All the MaxxForce engines in
the 12 Series for gen-set applications will be manufactured either in
Navistars Brazil or India plant to better serve our customers worldwide.
Reginato also said Navistar is building a new manufacturing plant in
Hefei, China.
But the commitment of Navistar toward its worldwide gen-set customers
does not stop with the manufacturing
and supply of a full line of dedicated
engines, in fact the company said
it puts a lot of importance in what is
internally referred to as development
and integration.
To this extent Navistar has founded
a fully owned company: PurePower
Technologies LLC located in Columbia,
South Carolina, U.S.A., which designs
and manufactures fuel injection components, specialty valves, metal castings and aftertreatment products.
Reginato said the support of
PurePower Technologies is critical
in Navistars approach to its many
market applications. For Navistar, as
a truck and diesel engine manufacturer, the stationary market for gensets especially in nonregulated
areas does not really pose many
problems. The company works with
all state-of-the-art technologies to
fulfill the stringent emissions regulations for the truck market.
