At CB 11Q, David Weprin Urges Community Protest MTA Service Cuts
Former NYC Councilman David Weprin attended Queens Community Board 11 to urge all concerned residents to speak out, testify and rally against the service cuts at upcoming hearings. At a meeting of Queens Community Board 11, at the M.S. 158, 46-35 Oceania Street in Bayside, the Democratic nominee for Assembly from the 24th A.D., also indicated the Queens hearing date. As Chair of the City Council's Finance Committee for eight years through 2009, David Weprin always believed in the primacy of preserving core services. The MTA service cuts include eliminating the Q75 and Q79. View the complete list of cuts at: http://mta.info/mta/news/books/pdf/100125_1031_service2010-nyct.pdf for NYC Transit, http://mta.info/mta/news/books/pdf/100125_1032_service2010-access.pdf for Access-a-ride, http://mta.info/mta/news/books/pdf/100125_1616_service2010-lirr.pdf for the LIRR and http://mta.info/mta/news/books/pdf/100125_1034_service2010-bus.pdf for MTA Bus. “As we begin the new year in earnest, we face a significant challenge to mass transit service that helps make a difference to our quality of life in eastern Queens,” stated Councilman Weprin. “Certain cuts proposed by the MTA to address its revenue shortfall makes no sense; and the impacts fall on our young, our seniors and hard-working residents who work off-hours. Whether or not you personally use these transit services, you likely know someone affected, a child, a parent, a co-worker, a neighbor, a worker at a store you shop at.” The Queens hearing takes place, 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel, Phoenix Ballroom, 135-20 39th Avenue, Flushing, Queens. Directions: 7 train to Flushing-Main Street; Q12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20A/B, 26, 27, 28, 34, 44, 48, 58, 25/65, 66, QBx1, N20, 21; LIRR to Flushing-Main Street. For additional hearing dates and locations, please view http://mta.info/news/pdf/hearings.pdf. “Just look at some of the cuts that impact eastern Queens,” added Mr. Weprin. “This includes in addition to eliminating the Q75 and Q79, no overnight Q30 service, and ending weekend service on the Q31, Q76. Other lines slated to be shut down or cut include the Q26, Q56, Q74 and Q84. Subway lines affecting Queens residents include the G, M, Q, W and Z.” “I urge all concerned residents to speak out, testify against the service cuts at upcoming hearings and press Albany and City Hall to look for efficiencies in the MTA budget that cover its budget needs,” concluded Mr. Weprin. -30-
