Theperformanceswererecordedonahometape
machineusingasinglemicrophone,resultinginalow
fidelityrecording.Ted"Kingsize"Taylorbeganto
investigatepossiblemarketingofthetapesin1973.The
tapeswereeventuallyboughtbyPaulMurphyand
subjectedtoextensiveaudioprocessingtoimprovethe
sound,leadingtothe1977album.
Althoughthepoorsoundqualitylimitsitscommercial
appeal,thealbumprovideshistoricinsightintothe
group'sclubactintheperiodafterRingoStarrjoinedbut
beforetheemergenceofBeatlemania.TheBeatleswere
unsuccessfulinlegallyblockingtheinitialreleaseofthe
albumtherecordingswerereissuedinmanyformsuntil
1998,whenTheBeatleswereawardedfullrightstothe
performances.

Background
TheBeatles'fiveresidenciesinHamburgduring1960to1962allowedtheLiverpoolbandtodeveloptheir
performanceskillsandwidentheirreputation.DrummerPeteBestwasaddedtothebandinAugust1960to
securetheirfirstHamburgbooking,wheretheyplayedfor48nightsattheIndraClubandthen58nightsat

theKaiserkeller.TheBeatlesreturnedtoHamburginApril1961toplayattheTopTenClubforthree
months.[2]
AnewHamburgmusicvenue,theStarClub,openedon13April1962,withTheBeatlesbookedforthe
firstsevenweeks.TheBeatlesreturnedtoHamburginNovemberandDecember1962fortheirfourthand
fifthengagementsthere,whichhadbeenbookedfortheStarClubmanymonthsinadvance.Unliketheir
previousthreetripstoHamburg,theirdrummerwasStarr,havingreplacedBestinAugust.TheBeatles
werereluctanttoreturnfortheirfinaltwoweekbooking,whichstarted18December,astheyweregaining
popularityinBritainandhadjustachievedtheirfirstchartedsinglewith"LoveMeDo".[3]

PortionsofTheBeatles'finalStarClubperformances(alongwithotheracts)wererecordedbytheclub's
stagemanager,AdrianBarber,forTed"Kingsize"Taylor.[4]BarberusedaGrundighomereeltoreel
recorderatatapespeedof3inchespersecond,withasinglemicrophoneplacedinfrontofthestage.[5]
Taylor,leaderofTheDominoes(whowerealsoplayingattheclub),saidthatJohnLennonverballyagreed
tothegroupbeingrecordedinexchangeforTaylorprovidingthebeerduringtheirperformances.[4]
Thetapeswereoriginallydescribedashavingbeenrecordedinthespringof1962,anattempttopredate
TheBeatles'June1962contractsigningwithParlophone.[6]However,songarrangementsanddialogue
fromthetapespointedtolateDecember1962,[7]andarecordingdateof31December1962(thegroup's
lastdayinHamburg)wascommonlycited.[8]Laterresearchershaveproposedthatthetapesarefrom

thatlabellingandlinernotesonearlyreleasesgaveincorrectinformationaboutwhowassingingandthe
exactsongbeingperformed.MuchofTheBeatles'dialoguebetweensongsisaudible,whichincludes
addressingtheaudienceinbothEnglishandGerman,aswellasreparteeamongthemselves.Thebanteris
irreverentandcoarseattimes,anaspectoftheirstageactthatwouldsoonceaseundertheinfluenceof
managerBrianEpstein.[10]

Marketingattempts
TaylorsaidhehadofferedtosellthetapestoEpsteininthemid1960s,butthatEpsteindidnotconsider
themtobeofcommercialvalueandofferedonly20.Taylorsaidhekeptthetapesathome,largely
forgottenuntil1973whenhedecidedtolookintotheirmarketability.[11]Williamsrelatesadifferenthistory
thanTaylor,statingthatafterTaylorreturnedtoLiverpool,heleftthetapeswitharecordingengineerfor
editingintoapotentialalbum.Theprojectwasneverfinishedandtheengineerlaterrelocated,withthe
tapesbeingamongmanyitemsleftbehind.In1972,Williams,Taylor,andtheengineergainedaccesstothe
abandonedofficeandrecoveredthetapes"frombeneathapileofrubbleonthefloor."[12]

WhentheexistenceofthetapeswasfirstpubliclyreportedinJuly1973,Williamswasplanningtoask
Appleforatleast100,000.[13]WilliamssaidhelatermetwithGeorgeHarrisonandStarrtoofferthetapes
for5000,buttheydeclined,citingfinancialdifficultiesatthetime.[14]WilliamsandTaylorteamedup
withPaulMurphy,headofBukRecords,tofindanoutletforthetapes.[15]

Release
Murphyeventuallyboughtthetapeshimselfandformedanewcompany,Lingasong,specificallyforthe
project.[15]HesoldtheworldwidedistributionrightstoDoubleHLicensing,whichspentmorethan
$100,000onelaborateaudioprocessingandmixingofthesongsunderthedirectionofLarryGrossberg.[5]
Thesequenceofsongswasrearranged,andsomeoftheindividualsongswereeditedtobypassflawedtape
sectionsormakeupforanincompleterecording.[7]
AfteranunsuccessfulattemptbyTheBeatlestoblockit,the26songLive!attheStarClubinHamburg,
Germany1962wasreleasedbyLingasong.[6]ThealbumfirstappearedinGermanyinApril1977in
associationwithBellaphonRecords,andwasreleasedintheUKthefollowingmonth.[16]Forthealbum's
June1977USrelease(inassociationwithAtlanticRecords),foursongswereremovedandreplacedwith
fourdifferentsongsfromthetapes.[17]

Reissues
Overthenexttwodecades,therecordingswerelicensedtoseveralrecordcompanies,resultinginnumerous
releaseswithvaryingtrackselections.In1979,PickwickRecordsperformedsomeadditionalaudiofiltering
andequalisationofthesongsontheLingasongUSversion,andreleaseditovertwovolumesasFirstLive
Recordingsthesetincludedthesong"HullyGully"thatwasmistakenlycreditedtoTheBeatles,[18]but
wasactuallyperformedbyCliffBennettandtheRebelRousers,anotheractontheStarClubbill.[19]In
1981,AudioFidelityEnterprisesreleasedHistoricSessionsintheUK,thefirstsinglepackagewithall30
BeatlestracksfromtheoriginalStarClubreleases.[20]SeveraladditionalsongsfromtheStarClubtapes
haveappearedonBeatlesbootlegrecordsovertheyears.[10]
In1985,abootleggerknownas"Richard",whohadalreadyfoundinfamybyissuingseveraltitleswith
controversialcoversandcontent,issuedhisown,bootleg,versionoftheStarClubtapeswithoutanyofthe
editingfoundontheofficialreleases,entitledTheBeatlesvs.theThirdReichdirectlyparodyingThe
Beatlesvs.theFourSeasonsinbothnameandcover.[21]
ThereleaseoftherecordingsontwoCDsbyindustrygiantSonyMusicin1991sparkedrenewedlegal
attentionbyTheBeatles(asrepresentedbyPaulMcCartney,Harrison,Starr,andYokoOno).[22]Sonyalso
producedaversionspecificallyfortheirColumbiaHousemusicclub,butSonywithdrewthetitlesin1992
asalawsuitwasprogressing.Lingasong'sCDreleaseoftheoriginalsetpromptedanotherlawsuitfromThe
Beatlesin1996thecasewasdecidedin1998infavourofTheBeatles,whoweregrantedownershipofthe
tapesandexclusiverightstotheiruse.Harrisonappearedinpersontoprovideevidenceinthecase,andhis
testimonywascitedasanimportantfactorinthejudge'sdecision.Harrisoncharacterisedtheclaimthat
LennongaveTaylorpermissionfortherecordingas"aloadofrubbish",andadded:"Onedrunkenperson
recordinganotherbunchofdrunksdoesnotconstitutebusinessdeals."[23]

Thealbumhadlimitedcommercialsuccess,reachingapeakpositionofNo.111duringasevenweekrun
ontheUSBillboard200albumchart.[28]Assessmentsofthealbumoftenweighthepoorsoundquality
againstthehistoricimportanceandinsightprovidedintoTheBeatles'earlystageact.RollingStone
reviewerJohnSwensoncalledthealbum"poorlyrecordedbutfascinating"andcommentedthatitshowed
TheBeatlesas"rawbutextremelypowerful."[29]Allmusic,commentingonareissue,wrote:"Theresults
wereverylowfidelity,anddespiteTheBeatles'enormoussuccess,ittookTaylorfifteenyearstofind
someonegreedyandshamelessenoughtoreleasethemasarecord".[30]QMagazinedescribedthe
recordingsashaving"certainhistoricalinterest"andremarked:"Theshowseemslikeariotbutthesound
