ARE YOU READY FOR CIT???

Now entering its 15th
year, the Coconino
Institute of Technology
continues to be one of
FUSDs spotlight
programs. CIT offers an
integrated course of
study in science,
technology and
engineering at CHS.
Students begin their
freshman year as a cohort
and continue through
high school together,
becoming closer than
family.

science classes and apply

them to their engineering
courses.
The freshman year
features Physics and
Engineering I. Students
learn principles of
Newtonian Mechanics
that are applied to
projects designed in CAD.
The grand finale of the

year is the class trip to

Six Flags Magic
Mountain to explore the
physics of roller coasters!
Sophomore year is all
about Chemistry.
Properties of matter and
energy are used to create
bigger and crazier
projects like Rube
Goldberg Machines,
wind turbines and our
infamous cardboard
boats!

CIT Capstone: The Grand Finale!

CIT is all about
experiencing science and
engineering. The CIT
Capstone Experience
challenges students to take
what theyve learned into
the real world. The
Capstone Experience year
is dedicated to gaining a
deep understanding of the
process of science and
engineering:

1: Identify a real problem

2: Research the problem
and consult with experts
3. Design an experiment or
product to address the
problem.
4. Carry out your
experiment or test your
product.
5. Share your findings with
others.

In the fall, CIT students

will do mini-projects to
practice the process in
depth with projects from a
variety of fields. In the
spring, students will design
and carry out their own
capstone project. For many
of our students, this is the
favorite part of the
program because it is
unique to every student.

*CIT biology is now taught as part of the MIT-e program at SMS. Students who are accepted to CIT who did not complete MIT-e will need to take
biology when it can fit into their schedule. MIT-e is NOT a requirement to get into CIT! All students are encouraged to apply.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES AT CHS

Coconino High School is proud to
offer a variety of Advanced
Placement courses. Many students
in the CIT program take numerous
AP courses throughout their four
years at CHS. Students can take
Pre-AP courses in their freshman
and sophomore years to help
prepare them for the rigor of AP
courses. CHS also offers some
courses for dual enrollment, in
which students can earn college
credit through Coconino
Community College. FUSD was
recently named to the 5th AP
Honor Roll!

The grand finale of the CIT pro

gram is the Capstone Experie
nce. Students
choose a science or engineering
topic that they are passionate
about, and
design a semester-long project
around that topic. Our alumn
i say this is
their favorite part of the pro
gram, and that it prepared
them for the
rigors of college better than
any other experience in high
school.
Suzie Bloom (Class of 20
06)
Suzies interest in astronomy
led her to build her own tele
scope. Shes now
a graduate of the University
of Arizona with a degree in
Aerospace
Engineering.
Peter Bremer (Class of 200
7)
Peter graduated from Arizona
State University with a degree
in Bio
Engineering and is now wor
king as a process engineer her
e in Flagstaff at
WL Gore & Associates.
Maddie Burris (Class of

2010)
Maddie was fascinated by eng
ineering and did her senior pro
ject on
generating electricity using
a water pump. She submitted
her senior paper
as a part of her application
to college. She is a graduate
of WPI with a
degree in Robotics Engineerin
g and works for BAE System
s.
Jacob Dalder (Class of 201
1)
Jacob discovered a passion
for alternative energies and
experimented
with piezoelectricity (energy
from pressure, such as a foot
step.) Jacob
was named a Flinn Scholar
and is now studying at Stanfo
rd University.

APPLY NOW FOR CIT!

Are you an incoming freshman
who likes to take risks, think
outside the box, work
collaboratively, find your own
answers and have fun while
learning? Are you ready to join a
group of highly motivated students
that are as enthusiastic about
science, engineering and
technology as you are?

Then you might be ready for

CIT!

Step 2: Complete the

application

To get into CIT, you must

complete the testing and
application process.

If your placement score qualifies

you for CIT, you will be sent a
letter and application by March 2.
Complete the application, which
includes a short essay and teacher
recommendation, and return it to
CHS by March 13. Please include a
copy of your middle school
transcripts with your application.

Step 1: Take the placement

test. The placement test for CIT/
Science will take place February 19
during Pathways. Come to the test
with a scientific calculator and a
#2 pencil. The test includes both
scientific reasoning and math. You
can expect to solve for x, use
y=mx+b, interpret data and
graphs, and predict the outcome of
an experiment. A practice math
test is available on the CIT
website.

Letters will be sent out to

students the week of March
30 with notification of your
acceptance status!
GOOD LUCK!

Its an opportunity to learn more

about something that youre interested
in. It was a big changing point in my
decision to pursue a degree in
aeronautical engineering. Im
attending the US Military Academy at
West Point. I dont think I would have
been prepared or accepted if I hadnt
done CIT.
~Nikaila G. CIT Class of 2014

Even if you dont want to go into

engineering or science you can still
study something that you love and put
the science behind it. You learn to
teach yourself and thats really a cool
thing.
~Riley H. CIT Class of 2014

Im so grateful that I finished

my senior project. The program
and the experience are really
worthwhile. Everyone should
take this opportunity.

four years become
