Activity Type Chart

Katherine Grasso
Constraints of the
Technology

Activity

Standard

-The app must used on an

iPad
-Pieces do not stay together
once placed on the
workspace; this could make
lining them up and
comparing the fractions
difficult

Virtual Manipulatives: Have students use the app to

compare and contrast pairs of fractions listed out a
worksheet. Students will make note of the
relationship between the two (>,=,<).

3.NF.3b Recognize and generate

simple equivalent fractions.
Explain why fractions are
equivalent

-There is a cost associated

with this app if educators
want to use it in their
classroom (after the short
free trial period)

Mindmeister: Students will demonstrate their

knowledge of geometric transformations by taking
pictures of everyday objects and uploading them
onto a shared classroom Mindmeister map. Pictures
should be uploaded under the correct transformation
topic

8.G.1 Verify experimentally the

2
properties of rotations, reflections,
and translations

-Students may have

difficulties with notation.
Classroom time might need
to be spent troubleshooting
notation and/or going over
!
equivalencies (ex. x= x2)

FooPlot: An exploration of quadratic equations. Go

over the formula for a quadratic equation
(y=ax^2+bx+c). Have students work together and
graph different quadratics and experiment with
putting in different values for a,b, and c. Students
should note any generalizations they find.

F-LE Construct and compare

linear, quadratic, and exponential
models and solve problems

-Some features only

available for the premium
edition
-Takes time to get use to
app and its responsiveness
when creating various
shapes and lines

Geometry Pad: Given a list of points, students will

write a linear equation in y=mx+b format. Next,
they will be asked to graph their lines using
Geometry Pad. Finally, they will compare and
contrast their lines and work toward identifying
generalizations of linear equations in y=mx+b
format.

8.F Define, evaluate, and compare

functions

-Only author can modify

his/her own popples when
collaborating

Popplet: Using Popplet, students in groups of three

will create a mapping of the three different branches
of government (legislative, executive, and judicial).
Students must include information on the branches
duties/responsibilities, makeup, how each branch
uses the checks and balances etc.

Understand the purpose and

function of each of the three
branches of government
established by the Constitution
Understand the primary
responsibilities of each
branch of government in
a system of shared
powers (legislative,
executive, judicial) and
ways in which each
branch shares the powers
and functions of the other
branches.
Understand how the
legislative, executive, and
judicial branches use
checks and balances.

-Might not be able to see

the entire timeline in one
screen.

Timetoast: The class will work together as a whole

to complete a timeline of the Civil Rights movement
in the United States. After the timeline has been

Understand historical patterns,

periods of time, and the
relationships among these

created, each student will be assigned to a particular

event. They will be in charge of providing a
summary of the event, major players involved, and
the effect it had. This information will be added to
the class timeline

elements
Understand concepts such as
chronology, causality, change,
conflict, and complexity to
explain, analyze, and show
connections among patterns of
historical change and continuity.

-Need equipment or
technology to film video
-Need to spend classroom
time going over application
-Restricted to using apple
effects and media

Movie: Students will work in groups to create

political campaign ads using iMovie. They will
incorporate their own ideas as to how to make their
school better place while appealing to other
students, educators, and administrators desires and
needs.

Understand strategies for

effective political action that
impacts local, state, and
national governance

Understand the concept

of civic responsibility.

Understand the
importance of political
leadership, public service,
and a knowledgeable
citizenry in American
democracy.

Understand the concept

of political leadership in the
students own school,
community, state, and the
nation.

-Could be challenging or
time consuming going over
each post-it.
-So many post-its on the
screen might be
overwhelming and be
disorganized.

Listhings: Each student will be asked to list

anonymously 5 items they believe should be
guaranteed to all people by the United State
Constitution. As a large group, the instructor will
display the canvas and foster a discussion on why
rights are so important. Topics for the discussion:
-why did you choose this particular right?
-were some rights chosen more often than others?
-are there any rights you would be more willing to
give up than others?
-can we as a class reach a consensus of the rights
that should be guaranteed to all?
-are there certain rights we are taking for granted?

Understand how the

government established by the
Constitution embodies the
principles of democracy
Understand values such as
individual rights, the common
good, self government, justice,
equality, diversity, openness and
free inquiry, truth, patriotism are
fundamental to American public
life.

-Students are unable to

upload their own photos or
images from the web
-Restricted artwork

Storybird: Using Storybird, recreate the story from

Lord of the Flies changing one element of the book
(location, year, character type,.....).

-There is a word limit for

the comments. Students
might not be allowed

Pinterest: Students are required to read at least five

free read books throughout the year. For each book
the students read, they are required to pin a picture

IA.1. Employ the full

range of research-based
comprehension strategies,
including making
connections, determining
importance, questioning,
visualizing, making
inferences, summarizing,
and monitoring for
comprehension.

IA.2. Read on-level text, both

silently and orally, at an
appropriate rate with accuracy

onto their Pinterest board and include an

explanation. The picture should depict something
related to the context of the book. The explanation
needs to explain why the student chose the picture
they did.
