A scholarship
for sportsmanship

Golden Eagles take on Vikings

TAA awards Sean Clegg

Memorial College Scholarship
Fund Award to Erick Endt
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
The Tabernacle Athletic Association has made its final decision for the winner of the fifth annual Sean Clegg Memorial College Scholarship Fund Award.
During this years Opening
Day ceremonies, the TAA baseball program presented Seneca
High School senior Erick Endt
with the $1,000 college scholarship.
TAA has always been a big
part of my life, playing both basketball and baseball growing up,
Endt said. I won districts when I
was 12 years old. That was just
one of the countless great memories that I got to share with my
friends because of this program.
This award was established in
2011 to provide one college scholarship each year to a participant
who meets all eligibility criteria
and best exemplifies and reflects
Seans legacy of having an indelible human spirit, outstanding

moral character and strong love

and connection to the game of
baseball.
Sean started with TAA at a
young age, as he participated at
every level of the TAA recreational baseball program. He played
the game with tremendous heart,
dedication and sportsmanship,
proudly representing the community of Tabernacle.
TAA feels it is important to
recognize
participants
who
demonstrate the values of good
sportsmanship, teamwork and
community spirit both on and off
the field, TAA PR Director Peter
Damiri said. Our hope is that
participants learn these valuable
life lessons in part from playing
TAA sports and carry these qualities with them as they grow into
responsible young adults.
Seans life was tragically taken
from him nine days shy of his
15th birthday. His parents courageously decided to donate Seans
organs to help others in need.

BOE formulates plan for students

not participating in PARCC
Parents complained at last months meeting about lack of plan
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
At last months Tabernacle
Board of Education meeting, several parents criticized the district
for not having consistent, boardapproved plans designed sooner
for those students not taking the
PARCC test.
After comparing their situation to other similar resolutions,
the board came up with a unique
solution regarding supervision of
students during PARCC testing
for those whose parents refused
participation in state testing.
This is a Tabernacle homegrown resolution that captures
most of the comments of our parents and our community members, and it reflects the opinion of
all the board members relative to

what we believe is important,

Board President Michael Lee
said.
The board recognizes parents
have the right to make decisions
for their child, including but not
limited to the refusal that their
child not take one or more of the
state Department of Education
standardized tests.
The board will not condone
any negative or punitive treatment, explicit or implicit disciplinary action or impact on a students course grade, deportment
or attendance of any student solely because the students parent refused participation in standardized testing.
These students will be assigned
to a separate, quiet study area for
the duration of each days test
session only. School administra-

tors and staff will not provide instruction or alternate assignments during the testing session.
A separate concern that was
addressed during the meeting
was the declining enrollment
numbers in the district. The diminishing number of students is
starting at the kindergarten level
and having a domino effect on the
rest of the district.
Tabernacle Elementary School
has an enrollment of 410 students, and Olson Middle School
has an enrollment of 362 students. As of March 21, there were
772 total students.
Though these numbers are
relatively stable, there is still a
downward trend, Lee said.
There have also been problems

in our opinion

Enough regulation already!

We should promote innovation, not curb it

ix years ago, in 2009, a man had

a vision of changing the way a
long-standing industry operated. He felt the way the industry was
run wasnt the most efficient, wasnt
the most effective, hadnt adapted with
the times and didnt provide consumers with the best experience at the
best price.
Today, that mans company, Uber, is
well known and is in cities across the
country.
The company uses the person-to-person model to offer taxi-like services to
people through a mobile app. Users
download the app, select a car in their
area they want to use for the ride and
pay for the fare. The fare is listed based
on the trips length, and no cash is
needed while taking the trip.
Uber is catching on like wildfire
from users, who enjoy its accessibility selecting a ride with a few taps on
the phone instead of calling a taxi
company and waiting long times for

the drivers arrival and also its

cheaper price.
Uber also provides jobs to drivers
who are looking to earn extra money.
But this could all come crashing to a
halt, Uber says, if a New Jersey bill is
passed that would put onerous regulations on the company.
The legislation would require ridehailing companies such as Uber to display a Motor Vehicle Commission
marker when drivers are searching for
fares and would require background
checks for drivers, safety inspections
for vehicles and higher insurance regulations.
An Uber spokesman said the company already provides more insurance

than taxi companies do, and said if the

bill is passed, the company might be
forced out of New Jersey, resulting in
the loss of more than 5,000 jobs.
A similar bill in Kansas was struck
down by Gov. Sam Brownbacks veto,
and we couldnt agree more with his
reasoning:
Kansas should be known as a state
that embraces economic growth and
innovation. The jobs created by this
new industry can bring opportunity to
many Kansas families. An open and
free marketplace often results in higher quality products at a more affordable price.
New Jersey, similarly, should be a
state that embraces economic growth
and innovation. Uber found a way to
compete in the transportation market.
Good for them. They should be praised
for that, not overregulated to the point
of extinction.
If taxi companies cant compete, too
bad. Thats called business.

IMSC club soccer tryouts week of May 4

During the week of May 4, we
will hold our annual club soccer
tryouts for IMSC. We are committed to doing our best to provide
the players and parents in our
club with professional training, a
fun and enjoyable learning soccer
experience, and a nice facility
and environment in which to play
soccer; all this at reasonable
costs. We do this because of our
passion for the game of soccer
and to provide the best travel program experience IMSC soccer
can bring to the children of the
Seneca District. In towns our size,
where the pool of players is
small, it's not easy to sustain such
a program but our program has
grown and flourished quite well!
We truly have a strong community and dedicate ourselves to the
program.
Recently, we've also partnered
with Global Premier Soccer to
further develop the infrastructure for players joining the IMSC
travel and the IMAA rec soccer

programs in Indian Mills. Players

from others towns may and are
encouraged to join the IMSC travel program. We also purchased
four sets of portable lights to use
at our soccer complex for the fall
season since the number of teams
has grown. This will allow us to
take advantage of our recently expanded complex sixsoccer fields
on Atsion Road.
You
can
go
to
www.imsoccer.org for information regarding our tryouts the

first week of May. Please also take

a look at our Facebook page to
keep track of what IMAA is doing
to keep our programs strong and
serving our community!

The feedback that the board
received was that there are elements of this that, though it was

Lee said.
The board president decided to
withdraw this resolution and put

the board wanted to see happen

When I was younger, in baseball I never wanted to mess up because it made me feel like I was
letting down the team, so I would

CASA of Burlington County

in need of volunteers
Court Appointed Special Advocates of Burlington County is recruiting volunteers to advocate
for the best interests of children
who have been removed from
their homes due to abuse or neglect.
CASA works through trained
community volunteers to ensure
that needed services and assistance are made available to children while helping to move them
toward safe and permanent
homes. CASA and its volunteers
speak for children in court, serve

as fact finders for the family court

judges and safeguard the interests of the children while they
are in the foster care system. No
special background, experience
or training is required. The program will provide expert training
in legal issues, child welfare,
child development and social and
family services.
The Burlington CASA program holds regular information
sessions. Interested parties may
contact Harry Cassidy at (609)
265-2222 for more information, or

register for a session at

www.casaofburlingtoncounty.org.
