HISTORY CREATED AT FEETHAMS

In its 189 year history, the club
has come a long way since the
days of the back room of The
Green Tree Inn in Skinnergate.
This season we have once
again created history as we now
have our very first lady Chairperson in Gloria Howells.
Glorias father, Harry Eastwood
was a long serving treasurer and
committee member at the club.
Her son, Peter played at the
club as a junior and her husband
Brian was the club steward before his retirement.
Gloria has the club and the
cricket in her blood and hopes to
see the club develop further in
Our very first Lady Chair - Gloria Howells
the coming years. She runs the
club shop and is on hand at night matches and Sunday morning organising bacon butties and hot food and drinks.
Back in the sixties, the fairer sex were prohibited from entering the smoky inner
sanctum of the club. In 1961 ladies were allowed inside the clubhouse but only on
three days in the week!

However as the years went on changes were made and in the eighties we saw our
first ladies on the club committee in Mel Dobson and the late Janet Stubbs.
Nowadays the club depends on the input and commitment of all of its members
irrespective of their gender.

No other NYSD cricket club

has won 22 premier titles. We
are proud to hold that record
and look to create a club and
grounds that reflect that
record. It is up to us all, play-

ers, parents, supporters and

members to all pull together
and improve our club in every
way possible.
- Gloria Howells (Chair)

These are exciting times for the cricket club and we should congratulate Gloria for
her appointment and get behind her and her committee in their work for the club.
Darlington U11s 221-4 (Net 189) v Stockton U11s 249-4 (Net 217)
Result - Stockton won by 28 runs
Darlington won the toss and elected to bat against an experienced Stockton side. Against
some disciplined and accurate bowling, Darlington lost 4 wickets and ended up with a below
par net total of 189.
Early wickets from Madeleine Atkinson (1-10) and Rory Jones (2-8) put the pressure on the
away side and tight bowling from the rest of the attack kept Darlington in the game. A run
out in the penultimate pair lifted the young side before Amin and Hannah saw the game out
to win 28 runs.

A Star in the
Making?
Six year old Owen Harwood had
his dream come true when he
made his debut for the club in the
Under 11 league match last week.
The first game of the season was
rained off and the little fella was
inconsolable.

Doug Mulholland leading the way with 8 wickets from two games.

Good start to Season By

Senior Sides in 2015
Despite the loss of at least ten players from the senior sides during the off season,
all our teams remain unbeaten at the time of writing.
After two league games the first team lie in 3rd place behind Marske and Richmondshire as we strive to defend our Premier league title of 2014.
Two drawn games with Richmondshire and Marton see us a point behind last
years runners up Richmondshire who have also lost players.

However he got his chance last

week and bowled with good pace,
line and length taking his first wicket for Darlington! It was stumped
by 9 year old wicket keeper, Oli
Clark. Olis dad martin is the manager of the side. He has unbelievable dislocated his shoulder doing
throw downs for Oli!
Anyway back to Owen his dad is
coach of the under 13s and also
skipper of the third team. Owen
batted well too and when he got off
the mark there was a huge cheer!
First teamer, James Dobson was
heard to ask were we ever that
tiny?
Well James...YES you were!

To date, new skipper Matty Brown has looked in form with the bat and also with
his tactical decision making. On the bowling front Doug Mulholland has led the
way with a five wicket haul on the season opener and three wickets in last weeks
rain affected match.
The seconds also returned two drawn games having also played Richmondshire
and Marton. The third team recorded the clubs first senior win with a victory at
Hartlepool and a draw at home to Middlebrough. Keith Barker hit 94 in that game
and matty Fishburn has made two half centuries.

Well done Under 11s we will all

watch your progress.
The team looked immaculate in
the new club kit too!

Juniors step up to the plate

The departure of key players has allowed some of
our younger players the opportunity to step up in
standard and seize their chance for recognition.
Tom Sowerby has played in the 1st team on merit
and Rishabh Ray has bowled in the second team.
Several even younger players have made appearances in the third eleven.
These are exciting times for our youngsters. They
must push themselves and listen to advice as they
attempt to secure a place in the senior set up.

Were we ever that tiny?

A dream come true for Owen Harwood

Under 15s Report

Making our
club

Darlington U15s
suffered a surprise
loss against Darlington RA, in the first
outing of the season.
Darlington batted
first, making slow
progress towards a
below par total of 94,
which included only 3
boundaries. Star man
was Jonny Pears
who scored 50 not
out.

THE HOME OF
CHAMPIONS
The inside of the cricket
club now looks beautiful
and there are plans to
renovate the outside of
the clubhouse and surrounds of the ground.

We have been looking at

ideas to make the ground
look even better. The arrival of Darren Gibson as
Head Grounds man has
quickly shown super
wickets and preparation
for matches. He has
worked really hard and
the junior players have
even commented how
grateful they were for the
covering of their wickets.
Increased rolling has
helped the pace and carry of the wickets. Well
done Darren.
He did suggest that hardy
perennial shrubs around
the Skerne side of the
ground would protect the
new fence by taking
moisture away from the
wood. This made people
wonder if there was a
possibility of having a
plant donation and action
force evening or day. Still
at the planning stage it
would involve members
bringing shrubs/plants
down and taking responsibility for planting a section of the boundary
fence. Once a decision
has been made we will let
everyone know.

Despite a solid if
unspectacular bowling performance,
Darlington RA won
with a few balls to
spare.

The area outside the club entrance and behind the paddock seating area
could be developed into a lovely peaceful area with some green fingers. It
come be a lovely memorial garden for members.

Hopefully an early
season blip, but the
bowling needs to be
pitched up and the
boundary needs to be
hit more often if we
are to compete with
the better sides in the
competition.

R Horniman

More professional look

On the playing side, the addition of new playing kit through Tag
team wear and Cotton Traders and the bonus of the new
Darlington Baggy Green caps has made all our teams look more
professional.
The league now state that ALL kit should be team kit and not have any coloured stripes or other
team/county badges on them. Almost all of our players both senior and junior have complied
with this rule. Well done.
The baggy green caps can be ordered from Liam Coates. The
first batch of 20 have already gone so get in touch with him
quickly. In the best team with the Darlington baggy green!
Our committee have also organized new signage around the
ground. The idea is for visitors to be impressed upon arrival at
Feethams. If you can help in any way or have skills that may be
useful to the club then contact Gloria via email
gloria.howells@hotmail.com
We already have discovered that a junior parent is an expert in
the field of I.T. and communications and they are now helping set up a better wifi system. In the
next week or so the playcricket website is introducing live feeds for matches. Once we get the wifi signal
sorted you will be able to see the score updating
online. Exciting times for the clubget involved be
part of the best club!
