The Thought Occurred to Me

By Bob Mills

KNCSB Executive Director

E-mail: bmills@kncsb.org

First, I want to say thank you for the overwhelmingly positive response to last months article. Second,
I am pleased to know many folks are reading the article
and third, that it struck responsive chords in your heart
and mind.
Let me encourage us all to pray and seek the counsel
and comfort in Christ. My heart and mind lead me to
believe we need to prepare ourselves for difficult days
ahead. Preparing for difficult times means many things.
1. It means we need to immerse ourselves in Christ.
This means learning to be a sold-out Christ follower;
learning as much as we can about the person and work
of our Savior; and taking that knowledge and applying it to our lives daily. It also means becoming like
Jesus and living out our lives based on what we have
learned. It means transforming our minds and our
actions based on what we know about Christ Jesus.
The key word in what I said above is transformation.
It is one thing to know about Jesus. It is another thing

to intentionally allow your

life to be consumed by
the Spirit of Christ. This
is something of what it
means to be a Christ follower.
2. It means the church
must become a catalyst
for hope and healing in a
broken world. One of the
criticisms I hear spoken
in relation to the church is
that it has lost its ability to
influence community and
Bob Mills
culture.
The key word above is influence. How can we influence the world if we are not in the world? How can we
be salt and light unless we are in the world? When we
care for and love the people in the world (community),
we will have influence in the world.
To illustrate this idea, I am reminded of the movie

Sister Act. When the nuns were able to go into the community to build relationships and meet needs in the
neighborhood, the church began to have influence and
the community valued the church.
Basically, what I hope to communicate is that the
church needs to be a servant leader in the community.
If your church were to be destroyed by fire or a tornado, would the community miss you? Would they even
know you were gone? What is your church doing in
your neighborhood to bring about hope and healing for
the sake of Christ?
3. It means praying for a genuine Spirit led spiritual
awakening. I am not willing to give up and succumb
to a fatalistic position on the future. I believe God is
sovereign and that He is not surprised by our worlds
condition. I want more than anything to see a mighty
movement of God in my lifetime.
Join me and pray for renewal and spiritual awakening. I know you desire to see God move on us in a significant way. Dear friends, I ask you to pray fervently
with me to this end.

We are pretty good at giving the right answers, but

maybe we need to get better at something else honesty.
A church that isnt baptizing isnt okay.
A church that isnt seeing new believers in Christ
isnt fine.
A church that struggles financially, has plateaued
numerically and has no more vision than keeping the
lights on isnt blessed.
Those things are some tail-wagging honesty.
Jeremiah 17:7 says, Blessed is the man who trusts in
the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.
The Hebrew word for trust in this passage is pronounced ba-tah and has an alternative translation of
be confident.
So, lets try this one again with an alternative wording: Blessed is the man who who is confident in the
Lord, whose confidence is the Lord.
A blessed church is the one that is a risk-taking
church because their confidence is outside themselves
and their resources; its in the Lord.
A blessed church is one that sees fruit from their
labor, because their effectiveness is not in gimmicks,
patterns or tricks; its in the Lord.

A blessed church is one that lives on the razors edge

of finance, public opinion and servant energy, because
they have confidence in the Lord and thats all that
matters.
Too often we excuse our ineffectiveness as just the
way the world is today.
We condone our mediocrity by compare and contrast
with other churches stuck in mediocrity.
We lie to ourselves about where we are and where
we know we are going, because the honest truth is too
hard to face.
Well, our numbers, our situation and our trajectory
tell a story our tail is wagging.
So, lets get honest; nothing is too hard for the Lord,
but we are going to have to go the extra mile, take the
risk, lay it all on the line and find our confidence in
Him!
Set an outrageous baptism goal, spend money on
something that can do nothing for you but introduce
you to lost people, try the craziest thing you can think
of and pray over everything with a passion for a God
that not only can, but wants to do these things through
you.
Now, thatll get your tail wagging

His Tail Betrays Him

Our family dog is quite a character. Which is kind
of a euphemistic way of saying he is manipulative and
difficult at times. But, he is smart I will give him that.
Mornings are routine at our house and part of that
routine is rousting him out of his pillow-soft pet bed to
scamper outside to do his morning business.
Normally, he jumps up
right away and begins making multiple laps between
the back door and you with
each passing becoming
shorter and shorter as you
groggily lumber forward
until you reach the door.
Thats what happens,
usually. However, every
now and then hes almost
impossible to wake up. You
can call his name
You can tap him with
Andy Addis
your foot
You can even grab his little pet bed and slide it
across the floor like a flying carpet
Its true. There are days you just cant seem to wake
that dog up. I have noticed the days he just cant wake
up have been the coldest days of the year.
When I made that observation I started to pay a little
more attention to details during our morning routine.
On those days that he just wouldnt wake up, I would
call his name and he would lie perfectly still except
for one thing. His tail would begin to wag.
That little faker! On the coldest days of the year he
is smart enough to pretend to be asleep, but his tail
betrays him.
I sometimes wish pastors and church members had
tails.
How are you doing?
Fine.
Hows the church?
2 Blessed.

I have noticed that a number

of our leaders have started
viewing the future with an
apocalyptic bent. (In case you
are unfamiliar with the term
apocalyptic, it refers to a
coming period of chaos and
destruction.) We are seeing
some of our evangelical leaders calling for preparation to be
imprisoned for our faith. Many
anticipate violence against the
church in America.
This is not the first time that
believers in America began to
focus on the end of days and
with it the second coming of
Christ. In three other instances,
we have seen this apocalyptic
mood capture the attention of
Christians.
The first came during the
third and fourth decades of the

nineteenth century. It too was

a period of intense change that
presented an intellectual and
spiritual challenge to our faith.
It was the period of Jacksonian
democracy, and the new fire of
the Second Great Awakening.
For a church coming out of the
traditions of the eighteenth
century, it seemed to be a great
period of upheaval. Many
looked for an apocalyptic cataclysm that would initiate the
millennium.
The second period came during the decades that followed
the Civil War. The national
conscience was still seared from
this brother vs. brother struggle. It was also the first great
period of industrialization,
modernism, and a new kind of
liberal thinking that shook the
traditional faith.

Midwestern Seminary Unveils Latest Online

Education Initiative: OnlineYou
said this will afford a for the Church component to
every online class.
Another key feature of the new initiative is Online
Connect, in which professors from Midwestern Seminarys campus, who are teaching online classes, will
provide regular opportunities for students to meet with
them one-on-one or in a small group setting affording many online students a much more personalized
experience.
The final key difference is that there will be opportunities for students to visit Midwestern Seminarys Kansas
City-based campus as part of their required assignments.
We see them doing that through attending symposiums that are held in conjunction with our regular
on-campus events here, like our For the Church Conference that will be held on Aug. 31-Sept. 1, and various
other lecture series and occasions held throughout the
academic year, he said.
Allen added that the new online education format will
ultimately be of immense benefit to students who arent
able to uproot from their current station in life and
ministry and relocate to campus.
I think this style of learning is a game changer in online education. If you know anything about Midwestern Seminary, you know we exist for the Church, but if
there was one cut-line underneath that it might be that
we also exist for the student.
This is proof-positive of our determination to serve
the local church and to prepare our students in a way
that is affordable, is accessible, and that now is personable ultimately to them in their context of learning. I
pray that students will join us and be part of what God
is doing here at Midwestern Seminary as we train pastors, ministers, and evangelists for the church.

What do we do? We bear witness to our faith in Jesus Christ

MAY 2015

Midwestern Seminary introduced a new way of doing

online education, as it unveiled its latest online education initiative, OnlineYou, on April 9.
Seminary President Jason Allen said the ultimate focus
of OnlineYou is to provide students a customized online
education experience.
In establishing OnlineYou, we have customized our
online education program making it personalized to
every student, to their specific calling of ministry, and
to gear their online experience directly toward what
God has called them to do, Allen said. At Midwestern
Seminary, we are very proud of the fact that we have
been on the cutting edge of online education for more
than a decade. We feel like this new initiative positions
us, once again, on the very forefront of theological education with our online delivery systems.
Four key areas within the program, according to Midwestern Seminary Provost Jason Duesing, are what sets
OnlineYou apart from more traditional online formats.
The thing that Im really most excited about within OnlineYou is the customizable tracts, he said. Weve embedded into our online experience, strategic, contextualized assignments that allow students who are engaged
in ministry to apply information learned in class while
implementing skills learned in day-to-day ministry. On
certain assignments, students can choose to apply class
material as a pastor, teacher, or scholar would.
For example, if a student has identified that he is
called to be a senior pastor or preacher, hes going to
find assignments facing him that are tailored to that
task. If he is preparing for a teaching ministry, then he
is going to find assignments tailored to training him
for scholarship in a teaching ministry. There is really
nothing like it out there today. It is online education
designed for the millennial generation and beyond.
Secondly, there will be a practicum component
involved, where assignments within the online instruction will integrate and encourage one-on-one meetings
between students and local church pastors. Duesing

KNCSB ON MISSION
The Main Event Coming This Summer - Men Matter
I dont think anybody is going to argue with me when
I say that Men Matter. After all if it werent for men we
wouldnt have basketball, football, golf, and a whole
host of other extra-curricular activities! But on a more
serious note, anyone in ministry realizes that men add
value to the church. Men who serve in the childrens,
youth, and even adult departments are assets to Gods
Kingdom! Are they more important than women? No.
However men draw other men to church and play a
pivotal role in passing on their faith to future generations! When it comes to the church; Men Matter.
Sadly, churches dont do enough to reach and teach
the men that we have! But Im noticing that tide is
changing. In the Summer of 2014 we began a Monday
evening Mens Study here at our church and it has
been exciting to see that grow both in numbers and in
the excitement of the men anxious for the next study
to begin. In addition to that Mens Study, I had the
privilege of attending the Main Event in Nashville last
August. I am glad I went!
Due to the overwhelming response that LifeWay
Men had to their Main Event in Nashville, they have
expanded it to three different locations across the U.S.
in 2015 and one of them is right here in our backyard
at FBC Raytown on July 17-18. Another cool thing Im
excited about is that all of us attending the Main Event
from the KNCSB will be invited to have lunch together

on that Saturday and we will be unveiling our new

Mens Weekend (yet to be named) for the KNCSB that
will be happening in March of 2016 at Webster!
Let me be clear. The Main Event is not another
Promise Keeper-type conference. What I mean by that
is that Promise Keepers was a stand-alone conference
where men came, experienced God, and returned
to business as usual back home. The Main Event is
designed to be used as a spring board in order to bring
men in and get them plugged into a mens ministry at
your church.
Dont have a mens ministry? No worries, the Main
Event will be happy to show off a variety of resources
that are available to help you start reaching men. In
addition to the Main Event I would be happy to offer
any guidance that I can in starting a Mens Study at
your church as well. As I stated, ours here at FSBC
is less than a year old, but it is very exciting to see
how God is moving in the men that He is drawing in
through this intentional ministry!
I want to encourage you to mark July 17-18 on your
calendar and to bring as many men as you can to the
Main Event happening at FBC Raytown and then
stick around for the KNCSB luncheon afterwards on
Saturday. Because Men Matter.

Ladies Luncheon With Purpose

MAY 2015

Question: Whats an easy way to introduce a friend

to your God and your church?
Answer: Invite her to a purposeful ladies luncheon.
Can sharing Christ get any easier than that?
I admit it. Almost any ladies church group enjoys
a ladies luncheon. Its great fellowship, and quite a
fulfilling project, and many churches are planning
a spring luncheon right now. But when you add the
stated purpose of outreach to your luncheon, you give
it an eternal purpose.
Try some of these simple tweaks to morph your current ladies luncheon event into a life-changing outreach strategy:
n Make it enticing. When each detail of every luncheon is consistently top-quality, as unto the Lord,
members are proud to invite unchurched guests. Beautiful dcor. High-energy atmosphere. Well-planned timing. Engaging speaker. Yummy food. Chocolate dessert.
n Announce dates. When any church member has the
luncheon date on her calendar far ahead of time, she
can more easily invite guests. Select day and time to fit
your community. Our quarterly luncheons were on a
weekday, with a one-hour timetable so women could
come on their lunch break.
n Provide tickets. Whether there is a cost or not, a
printed ticket provides value. A woman can present it
as a gift to her guest.
n Create friendly peer pressure to remind members
to bring unchurched friends. For example; only those
who bring new guests are seated at the best tables.
n Train greeters, table hostesses and church members
to intentionally welcome guests, include them in conversation and introduce them to friends. Consistently
invite guests back for Sunday worship. The atmosphere
becomes its not about us as members see God at
work drawing women to Him.
n Ask the speaker to unapologetically weave Gods
plan of salvation into her talk, and point to His impact
on daily life.
n Gather contact info with a door prize form. (Just

one door prize, please.) Ask for name, email, phone,

and use checkboxes to indicate member or guest, interest in becoming a Christian, and a checkbox to request
church information.
n A follow-up team acts quickly. Each guest receives
a thank you email or call before Sunday, with an invitation to worship and a link to church website. Those
who want to know Christ receive immediate follow-up.
A purposeful ladies luncheon provides a comfortable
venue for women to bring unchurched friends to know
God. She could bring an employee, boss or co-worker.
She may invite her hairstylist, city council representative, neighbor or classmate. She may reserve an entire
table for her playgroup moms, book club, PTO officers,
yacht club, bowling team. You get the picture!
I can do that! you say. And so will other women in
your church.
Go out into the country lanes and behind the hedges
and urge anyone you find to come, so that the house will be
full. Luke 14:23

Weir Camp Grows, Serves More People

A man named Catalino came
to Christ, quit his job and set out
to win his family to Christ. He
later became a pastor.
When Catalino died, The
only thing he possessed in
the world was his Bible, Ken
Bowie told participants in
Childrens Camp 2014 at Weir
Baptist Camp.
Catalino died while reading
his Bible and it fell open on his
chest. He was buried that way.
You may be here saying,
What can I offer to God?
Bowie told the children and
their sponsors. If God calls
and you answer, God will equip
you.
Ken Bowie was a guest missionary for Childrens Camp
2014. He and his wife, Linda,
are retired missionaries. They
served in Peru and Chile with
the Southern Baptist International Mission Board. The Bowies are now serving with Tom
Cox World Ministries which
cooperates with the IMB.
Weir Baptist Camp, 12 miles
southwest of Pittsburg, Kan.,
has continued to see growth and
improvements in the past year.
Summer 2014 camps resulted
in 22 campers accepting Christ
as their Savior. A total of 81
decisions were recorded.
Along with the Southeast
Kansas Baptist Association
camps, the camp played host
to referees for the national clay
shoot at Claythorne Lodge,
Columbus, Kan.
The Regular Baptists KOAM
Encampment returned to the
camp in July 2014 with a total of
139 campers.
2015 summer camp dates are:

n June 1-5: Senior High

n June 8-12: Junior High
Camp
n June 15-19: Childrens

completed grades 3-5)
n June 22-23: Kingdom Kids
Camp (for children who have
completed grades 1-2)
n June 24: Day camp (for
children age 4 through completing kindergarten)
Weir Baptist Camp also is
continuing to see growth in
weekend events, including
Hispanic camps.
After the construction of two
new cabins, attention is now
focusing on maintenance and
smaller improvements, said
Delbert Callaway, camp manager. Callaway has served as
manager of Weir Baptist Camp
for nine years.
Three Volunteer Christian
Builder couples served at Weir
Baptist Camp in the summer
of 2014. These couples feel a
calling to camp ministry and are
planning to return this year.
Kansas-Nebraska Campers
on Mission continue to make
a difference at the camp. They
hold spring and fall work projects there, along with the Campers on Mission fall rally.
Another major blessing in
the past year came when a
long-time supporter set up an
endowment fund for the camp.
The fund was set up with the
Kansas-Nebraska Southern
Baptist Foundation.
For nearly 60 years God has
been using Weir Baptist Camp
to reach people for Christ and
disciple them.

For nearly 60 years, Weir Baptist Camp, 12 miles southwest of Pittsburg, Kan., has been a
place where people are reached for Christ and discipled. (Below, left) Plans for 2015 call

as 150 people gathered Saturday, March 28, for the KNCSB
Vacation Bible School Jumpstart
Clinic at Webster Conference
Center, Salina, Kan.
Ken Beckner, the new
KNCSB Bible teaching team
leader, welcomed the crowd.
He paid tribute to Marie Clark,
who recently retired from that
position. But Clark is not sitting
back and relaxing she taught
a session on children and salvation at the clinic. She continues
to serve with her husband,
Bob, in planned giving for the
Kansas-Nebraska Southern
Baptist Foundation.
Beckner also said that Debbie
Carter, another member of the
KNCSB Bible teaching team,
will be retiring at the end of the
year.
VBS is an incredible, incredible ministry, Paul Eardensohn
told the crowd. I thank you for
being on the front lines of reaching kids for Christ.
Eardensohn is manager of
LifeWay Christian Store in Topeka. He set up a bookstore at
the VBS clinic and also comes to
many other KNCSB events.
Participants in Vacation Bible
School 2015 will learn how to
follow Jesus as their guide.
Journey off the Map Unknown to Us, Known to Him
is the 2015 LifeWay Christian
Resources VBS theme.
The Scripture is, Whenever
you turn to the right or to the
left, your ears will hear this
command behind you; This
is the way. Walk in it. Isaiah
30:21 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
This is the way. Walk in it,

Feet to my Faith

Hello!

Dianna Bartel
Life Session Leader-WWW

KN Womens Leadership Women4Him Team

What type of vacationer are you? My husband and I are on totally opposite ends of the spectrum.
He says that vacation starts when you get there, where I, on the other hand, think that the journey is
part of the vacation. I have no problem with sitting in the car and enjoying the drive, whereas Ryan
would rather fly, be there quickly, and then start the fun. I think that I have a little in common with
Boomama on this particular issue.
If you have never heard the name Boomama, you need to stop what youre doing right now. Go
log onto your computer. Type www.boomama.net into your internet browser. Now, get a cup of
coffeeand sit down and enjoy some real life. Sophie Hudson, better known as Boomama, began her
mom blog in 2005, and has since written two books as well. In Home is
Where My People Are, Sophie tells us real stories of real people, in a way
that only she can. Sophie uses humor and real life situations to teach us
that wherever you are, on whatever path (no matter how hard or how easy),
God is at work in the journey teaching us, shaping us, and refining us
Sophie Hudson
sometimes through the most unlikely people and circumstances. And guess
what?!? Sophie is our speaker for WWW 2015!
Sophie will be joined by worship leader Lori Morrison. Lori grew up in a musical family, and has
led worship all over the world. Her original worship songs are available on iTunes. Lori was our
worship leader for WWW in 2011 and we are so excited to have her joining us again!
Make plans to join us September 11 and 12 in Salina, Kansas, for what promises to be an unforgetLori Morrison
table journey!

A Word From

A diamond is a chunk of coal that did well under pressure. Henry Kissenger
I am feeling the pressure! My son is graduating from elementary school, has joined a competitive baseball team, and is in Scouts. We are selling our house, looking for our next one and are busy with work,
school meetings, all in addition to chasing our son from one activity to the next; not to mention each
of us and our individual church responsibilities. Im sure you can relate. In fact some of you can probably
trump me with your own busy schedule!
Right now might be pushing the limit a little, but in a warped way I enjoy being busy. I know. Im crazy!
My mom has always told me that I do my best work when Im stressed. I seem to feel purposeful when
Im busy and multitasking is fun. Its a challenge.
Acts 17:28 says, For in Him we live and move and have our being ... for we are indeed his offspring.
This is where God has been working on me. Bottom line - my feeling of purpose shouldnt come from
these activities but from Him. Activities and busyness arent bad if I remember that its in Him that Im
living. Its in Him that Im moving. Im a child of the King and, therefore, everything I do is an act of worship. Im a reflection of
Him; or at least Im supposed to be. My purpose is to BE in Him!
As women we have so many titles and responsibilities. What of Him are we displaying? Are our words, actions, and attitudes
reflecting of His character?
I recently saw this quote. Adult life; if youre not tired youre doing it wrong. Are we running ourselves so fast and furious that
we are tired and missing the opportunities for ministry that He puts before us?
Be encouraged! You are not the only one. Im slow and need reminders so I have decided to place scripture cards in visible
places for encouragement. If youre not already, try this with me and lets remind ourselves of our purpose so that we are ready
when He calls!

Women in Crisis Are All Around Us

Shiggaion,
Mari

May 2015

Crises are a change in the events that make up the day-to-day life of a woman and those in their close circle.
Crises are life altering and require action that is outside the normal daily routine. A woman going through
a crisis experiences a state of mental unbalance, causing the ego to struggle to balance both internal and
external demands. Crises are real! They are in our churches, in our Sunday School Classes, our Small Groups,
and our Bible studies!
Is your natural response to shy away from getting involved with women in crisis? Involvement will be
messy. It will take precious time. The Bible gives us the motivation we need for getting in the mess. We should
feel compelled to help because of our love for God and what He has done for us. Check out 2 Corinthians
chapter 1.
Crises send us in a tailspin. But for the family member, friend, co-worker, neighborcrises give us an opportunity to become the hands and feet of Jesus.
Using the experience of our own pain, can bring purpose to it when we allow it to prompt us into actively
loving others when they suffer.

A friend posted on Facebook the Thursday before

Easter, that for the disciples, that Thursday was the
last normal day for the rest of their lives. This has
stayed in the back of my mind as I have been reading
in Acts the last week or so. Ive been thinking about
what those days must have felt like for Jesus followers as a new normal was being established. Today I
read Acts 1 again, but this time when I read I realized
the disciples were left with a choice as Jesus was
taken into heaven.
After He had said this, He was taken up as they
were watching, and a cloud took Him out of their
sight. While He was going, they were gazing into
heaven, and suddenly two men in white clothes stood
by them. They said Men of Galilee, why do you stand
looking into heaven? This Jesus who has been taken
from you will come in the same way that you have
seen him going into heaven. Acts 1:10-12 HCSB
Having heard those words the disciples could
have simply stood waiting for Christ to return, but
they chose instead to go back to Jerusalem. Why?
Because Jesus hadnt prepared them to stand and
wait, Hed prepared them to go and do. That is what
putting feet to our faith is all about. For the disciples
putting feet to their faith was understood. Every moment they spent with Jesus He was preparing them
for His absence.
As we use the disciples and those same instructions from Jesus as our example, what does putting
feet to our faith mean for us? Many times when we
think of putting feet to our faith we think of going
somewhere. Going on a mission trip, going next door
to speak to a neighbor, or going downtown to minister
to the homeless. God uses the going! Ive had amazing experiences going somewhere for the gospel. But
God doesnt always call us somewhere. Somewhere
can turn into an event in our minds that we start and
stop, then go home. Adventures of a sort that we step
out of real life for, but after its over we return to normal. I dont think the disciples ever returned to what
had been their normal life. So, stop thinking for a
moment that God has called you somewhere and see
if God has called you to something. What if God calls
us to walk out our faith in life happenings and events?
Sometimes those things arent adventurous or amazing, they are simply hard, draining and hurtful. Putting
feet to our faith in job loss is hard to consider an adventure. Walking out faith when dealing with cancer is
difficult to identify as amazing. Being called to put feet
to our faith sometimes means hard stuff that we cant
leave to return to normal life.
Jesus tells Peter in John 21:18-19 that Peter will
someday be carried where he doesnt want to go
(indicating Peters death). But Jesus still says, Follow Me!
On a personal level, what are you called to go and
do? Where are you standing and waiting when you
could be walking out your faith? Are you missing
something that God has called you to because its not
an adventure?
