ESL Differentiated Lesson Plan on Seeds

Kindergarten
Objectives:
Students will be able to sort seeds into like groups based on physical
qualities.
Students will also be able to complete a graphic organizer by using
tally marks and drawings to represent each of the four kinds of seeds.
Teacher Activities:
Teach vocabulary: plant, grow, seed, dirt, same, different
Show/explain how to sort but allow students to choose their way of
sorting
Clearly explain what needs to happen on the graphic organizer
Assist learners by providing support, guidance and encouragement as
they explore a new material.
Student Activities:
Listen to Ms. Bromaghim introduce plant unit
Understand that a plant starts out as a seed
Repeat vocabulary words back to teacher as they are being taught.
Sort four different types of seeds based on their physical qualities and
similarities, count them, write the correct amount of tallies and the
corresponding number, draw a quick picture of each seed.
Assessment:
Were students able to complete the graphic organizer with: No help?
(0 corrections) A little help? (1-3 corrections), Some help? (3-6
corrections), or A lot of help? (7+ corrections)
At the end of the group session, could students answer the question
What do seeds grow into? (exit ticket question asked out loud)
First Grade
Objectives:
Students will be able to sort seeds into like groups based on physical
qualities.
Students will also be able to complete a graphic organizer by writing
the name of the seed, using tally marks and numbers, and completing
drawings of each seed.
Teacher Activities:
Ask students what they already know about seeds.

Teach vocabulary: plant, grow, seed, dirt, same, different, sunflower


seed, pumpkin seed.
Show/explain how to sort but allow students to choose their way of
sorting
Clearly explain what needs to happen on the graphic organizer
Assist learners by providing support, guidance and encouragement as
they explore a new material.

Student Activities:

*Kindergarten and first grade had the same table graphic organizer, but first
graders were required to copy down the name of each seed.
Second and Third Grade Groups
Objectives:
Students will be able to sort seeds into like groups based on physical
qualities.
Students will be able discern between similarities and differences of
comparing two seeds and completing a Venn diagram graphic
organizer on it.
Teacher Activities:
Ask students what they already know about seeds.
Teach vocabulary: plant, grow, seed, dirt, same, different, sunflower
seed, pumpkin seed, endosperm, photosynthesis, seed coat, sprout,
etc.

Assist learners by providing support, guidance and encouragement as
they explore a new material.

Student Activities:
Speak new vocabulary words out loud and work to understand their
meaning. through listening to teacher and video.
Discuss what you already know about seeds.
Successfully sort seeds on own criteria.
Discuss sorting methods with peers and adults.
Pick two seeds to compare in a Venn diagram.
Compare similarities and differences and organize them correctly in the
organizer.
Assessment:
Were students able to complete the graphic organizer with: No help?
(0 corrections) A little help? (1-3 corrections), Some help? (3-6
corrections), or A lot of help? (7+ corrections)
At the end of the group session, could students tell or write down a
vocab word and explain or write its function?

Fourth and Fifth Grade


Objectives:
Students will be able to sort seeds into like groups based on physical
qualities.
Students will be able discern between similarities and differences of
comparing two seeds and completing a Venn diagram graphic
organizer on it.
Teacher Activities:
Ask students what they already know about seeds.
Teach vocabulary: plant, grow, seed, dirt, same, different, sunflower
seed, pumpkin seed, endosperm, photosynthesis, seed coat, sprout,
etc.

they explore a new material.
Student Activities:
