Major faults of electrical machines:

Stator faults resulting in the opening or shorting of one or more
of stator phase winding,
Abnormal connection of the stator windings,
Broken rotor bar or cracked rotor end-rings,
Static and or dynamic air-gap irregularities,
Bent shaft (akin to dynamic eccentricity) which can result in a
rub between the rotor and stator,
Shorter rotor field winding, and
Bearing and gearbox failures

Motor current signature analysis(MCSA)

Process of sensing stator current, uses results from its spectral analysis
to indicate an existing or incipient failure in induction motor (IMs).
MCSA is simply the process by which motor current readings are
recorded and analyzed in the frequency domain. .
Motor current signature analysis (MCSA) has proven to be a highly
valuable predictive maintenance tool. Although it is a relatively young,
rarely utilized technology, it is rapidly gaining acceptance in industry
today.

ANALYSIS OF ROTOR VIBRATION

A. Analysis of vibrations caused by air-gap eccentricity
The main idea is that the motor vibration can be measured indirectly
by measuring the corresponding change in air-gap length.
When vibration occurs due to the eccentricity, air-gap length should
at a speed be varied according to rotor rotational positions.
B. Finite element (FE) analysis
To analyze the vibration of the induction motor with the FE method,
vibration phenomenon was converted into air-gap length change
and analyzed with both normal and vibration state of the motor.
With normal state, air-gap length is constant, and it makes the
induced voltage at the search coil follow a constant cycle.
Vibration state, the difference of the vibration between the dynamic
eccentricity and the static eccentricity shows different magnitudes of
induced voltage according to the attached parts of the search coils.

Condition Monitoring of Squirrel Cage

Induction Motor through Torque Evaluation
Aim: To simulate broken rotor bars and stator interturn short of a squirrel cage
induction motor.
Monitor: By represent differences of the pattern and magnitude of a torque waveform
due to the air gap magneto motive force deterioration, showing a dominant peak during
severe stator winding fault.
Method: The modeling of the broken rotor bars and winding faults was used to verify the
theoretical background on the various faulty conditions in which torque characteristics
with waveform and ripple magnitude depicted the equipment conditions.
