Government should do what is right and not what is popular. Discuss.

Introduction
Governments first duty is to protect the people, not ruin their lives. Once said
Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of United States.
In order for a country and its people to develop and prosper, the government
plays a key role. Like how important the role of a parent is in bringing up a child
to become a good future citizen, the government is also the parent of the
citizens in his country. In a recent article last year published on March 20 2014,
titled Government will do whats right , not whats popular , Law and Foreign
affairs minister, K Shanmugam said once policies are crafted with the purpose
of getting votes, the country will go down. It is important for the government
to do what is right so that there would be less corruption in the country and
people would live for peacefully. Some may argue that the government is chosen
by the people in the country so the government should implement policies that
would satisfy the people. However, if these policies might result in a disastrous
effect on the entire country in the long run, it is best not to implement them.
Hence, the government should do what is right rather than what is popular to
ensure economic growth, less corruption and a peaceful country.
BP1: Government should do what is popular rather than what is right.
Some people feel that the government should respect the opinions of the people
in the country and implement some policies because they vote for them.
BP2: Government should do what is popular rather than what is right.
Some people might also argue that the government should please its people and
should thus go along with the opinions of the people in the country. For instance,
due to a popular choice, the government of United States sent its troupes of
people to Afghanistan to fight against the Talibans. However, much blood and
tears were shed during the fight against the Taliban.
BP3: Government should do what is right rather than what is popular.
In order for one to be a good leader, he has to uphold honesty, be forward
looking and prepare for the future. For example, many people did not like
NewWater as they found it very uncomfortable drinking processed sewage water.
However, the government still implemented NewWater as Singapore needed a
steady and reliable supply of water for consumption.
BP4: Government should do what is right rather than what is popular.
A leader should do what is right to help the people in its country. A leader should
ensure that there is security and peace in the country and thus there is a need
for a strong defence force. Many years back, when the Singapore government
decided to introduce compulsory military service. Many people were aghast at
the idea. The idea of precious sons being trained to go to war did not please
many people. The popularity of the government was at stake. Yet the
government went ahead with its plan and National Service was introduced. It
took many years for the people to accept the concept and the issue remained an
agenda in many elections and was drummed upon repeatedly by the opposition
politicians but the government stood firm. The government was firm on its stand

that an armed forces was a definite requirement and National Service is the best
option. The government was prepared to lose the next elections over the issue. It
was clearly a responsible decision and the people learnt to accept that it was a
good decision.
In conclusion, the aim of a government is to get the job done, even at the loss of
popularity. Their aim should be to always make decisions that are good enough
for the state and if they are ousted because of having acted rationally, they
should accept the peoples decision. It would be shameful for a government to do
all sorts of harm to the country and the people because it wants to remain
popular through making only popular decisions. Hence, the government should
do what is right rather than what is popular to ensure that there is less
corruption, peace and stability in the country.

Too much focus is placed on beauty. How far is this true of modern society?
A womens greatest asset is her beauty. Once said a British Scientist, Alex
Comfort.
Most people define beauty as the outer appearance of one and most people
judge others at first glance by how they look which is pretty much common.
However, there are some who do claim that inner beauty plays a more important
role than outer beauty. In todays society, everyone if not most people would
want to look good. Some even take pictures of themselves and upload them on
Instagram each time before they go out hoping to get some good comments
from their fellow peers to boost their self-esteem. People are afraid that others in
the society might judge them for being ugly or not as good looking as others.
There are even some who look at themselves in their mirror in public transports
and see how they could make themselves look better. Beauty con tests are
popular in many parts of the world. The biggest, Miss World competition has
been running annually since 1951, and although it is less popular in the UK now
than it was in 1968, when it attracted 27.5 million TV viewers, it attracts an
enormous worldwide audience-around 3 billion viewers in 115 countries. Some
may argue that importance is also given to intelligence as one does not employ
someone just because he or she looks glamorous but also takes into
consideration other aspects such as intelligence and talent. Nevertheless, the
truth still remains that much emphasis is still given to beauty as there are also
still some jobs such as modelling, air stewardess which considers beauty as a
very significant citeria before employing people for the career. Thus, too much
focus is placed on beauty in the modern society to a great extend.
BP1: Too much focus is placed on beauty to a large extend.
Many people enjoy watching as well as entering beauty contests. Nobody is
forced to do either. People buy beauty products such as SK-II to make themselves
look much younger than their actual age so that they would still look beautiful to
the people around them.
BP2: Focus on beauty to a small extend.

However for jobs such as doctors, scientists, the job requirements do not include
being beautiful. As long as one meets the requirement for the respective careers,
he or she can become a doctor or a scientist.
BP3: Too much focus is placed on beauty to a large extend
There are a number of people mostly girls who try to starve to look thin as they
believe that the definition of beauty is to look thin and without pimples Much
money is spent on facial treatments and there are many girls who try to look like
Barbie dolls. From young, probably at the age of 4,children get to play with
Barbie dolls and probably they aspire to look like them. Also, some people follow
some models on Instagram and aspire to become like them. However, they have
to understand that there is no fixed definition of beauty and the definition of
beauty varies from person to person.
BP4:Focus on beauty to a small extend.
Parents of todays generation place a higher emphasis on academics and less
focus is placed on how their children look. The people in the country are getting
competitive and trying to achieve the best they could. Parents spend tons of
money on tuition and there are not many parents whom give their children
money and allow them to spend them on facial treatments.
Should an individuals private life be made public?
All human beings have three lives: public, private and secret Once said a
Colombian novelist, Gabriel Garcia
Everyones private life has to be respected including those public figures. Everyone would not like
to reveal everything that is happening in their lives on the internet. Some people enjoy posting
everything that they do on social media as sometimes they might want their friends to comment
on what they post. However, there are some who find these type of people as attention seeking.
There is certainly a limit to what we should and should not post on the internet. The internet is
not a safe place as it might seem to be. One should always know what not to post and what to post
on the internet and secure their private lifes.Hence, an individuals private life should not be
made public as sometimes it might cause unnecessary troubles.
