Prime Minister launched MUDRA Bank under PM Jan Dhan Yojana to fund small entrepreneurs
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 April 2015 launched the Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency Ltd.
(MUDRA) Bankto fund the small entrepreneurs. The Bank was launched under the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan
Yojana (PMJDY). The bank will provide credit of up to 10 lakh rupees to small entrepreneurs and act as a regulator for
Micro-Finance Institutions (MFIs). It was set up through a statutory enactment. It would be responsible for developing
and refinancing all Micro-finance Institutions (MFIs) which are in the business of lending to micro / small business
entities engaged in manufacturing, trading and service activities. The concept of MUDRA Bank goes beyond credit
only approach and offers a credit plus solution for these enterprises spread across the country.
The role of MUDRA Bank # Lay down policy guidelines for micro enterprise financing business
# Registration of MFI entities
# Accreditation/rating of MFI entities
# Lay down responsible financing practices to ward off over indebtedness and ensure proper client protection principles
and methods of recovery

# Kishor will cover loans above 50000 rupees and up to 5 lakh rupees
# Tarun will cover loans above 5 lakh rupees and up to 10 lakh rupees
Background Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had proposed the creation of a Micro Units Development Refinance Agency
(MUDRA) Bank, with a corpus of 20000 crore rupees and credit guarantee corpus of 3000 crore rupees during the
presentation of Union Budget 2015-16 on 28 February 2015.

Union Government to re-classify industries in a three-coloured scheme based on pollution potential
The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on 7 April 2015 proposed a colour-coded system to
re-classify industries based on pollution potential. As per the proposal, the industries will be re-classified under threecoloured scheme, viz., Red, Orange and Green. The proposal was part of the resolution adopted at the two-day State
Environment and Forest Ministers' Conference at which measures to amend regulations to improve ease-of-doing
business while protecting the environment was discussed.
Proposed colour-coded scheme # Red Category: Industrial sectors with a score of 60 and more
# Orange Category: Industrial sectors with a score between 30 to 59
# Green Category: Industrial sectors with a score between 15 to 29
Industrial sectors scoring below 15 will be considered as white as they are environment friendly.
New renewal system for industries Further, it is proposed to scrap the present system of annual renewal of certification for industries and replace it with a
scheme that ties in with the colour-coded categories. Thus, as per the new renewal system:
# Industrial sectors falling under Red category will be given consent to operate with the validity period of five years
# Industrial sectors falling under Orange category will be given consent to operate for ten years
# Industrial sectors falling under Green category will be given a onetime consent
Apart from this, the individual units operative under this colour-coded scheme in various sectors will earn stars for
compliance with environmental norms. The two-day conference, which was participated by 30 ministers from different
state looked upon a wide range of issues like waste to wealth, ease of doing business, TSR Subramanian committee
recommendations, forest, wildlife, pollution-related issues, biodiversity and climate change.

Google signed strategic partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers to target Digital India projects
Online search giant Google on 5 April 2015 entered into a strategic partnership with consulting firm
PricewaterhouseCoopers to target Digital India Projects and large enterprise deals. With the Indian partnership, Google
wants to push itself into large e-governance projects and improve the sales for its cloud services in India.
PwC has already built a 30-member team to look after such projects and is using its 1800-people technology team in
India to develop industry-specific solutions built on Google platforms.
Google is already working with the government on several projects, including MyGov, the citizen engagement platform
of the government of India, to launch a nationwide contest to build a mobile app.
While Google has been fairly successful in reaching out to small and medium businesses in India, it still finds the going
tough when it comes to cracking projects at large corporations where its competitor Microsoft has a stronghold.
Microsoft in the end of March 2015 announced a similar partnership with KPMG to include a global collaboration to
deliver new suites of innovative solutions and services in data and analytics, cloud compliance and transformation and
business solutions. Both Google and Microsoft have been aggressively trying to be a part of the 1.13-lakh crore rupees

Narendra Modi launched National Air Quality index to monitor pollution level in 10 cities
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 6 April 2015 launched a National Air Quality Index (NAQI) to tackle the menace of
air pollution. This National Air Quality Index will provide information on the quality of air in 10 major cities in the
country on a real-time basis. The ten cities where the quality of air can be monitored are Delhi, Agra, Kanpur,

Lucknow, Varanasi, Faridabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. Later the index will be extended to
22 State capitals and 44 other cities with a population exceeding one million. The index was launched before the
inauguration of the Conference of State Environment and Forest Ministers in New Delhi. The conference is being
attended by state environment and forest ministers. The national conference aims at consulting states on making
changes in existing laws that govern environment and forest clearances.

Union Sports Ministry signed MoU with IIFCL to support TOP Scheme for Badminton
Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS) on 31 March 2015 signed a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) with India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited (IIFCL) to support Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOP)
Scheme for Badminton sport. Under the MOU, IIFCL shall contribute 30 crore rupees to the TOP Scheme under its
initiatives for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). IIFCL have contributed 10 crore rupees so far.
Activities that will be taken as part of the MoU # To provide customized training and coaching to TOP Scheme Athletes at institutes/centers having world class
facilities under the guidance of renowned coaches,
# To provide world class equipment to TOP Scheme Athletes,
# To ensure the availability of high quality support staff for the benefit of TOP Scheme Athletes, including but not
limited to, physiotherapists and sports psychologists; and
# To ensure that appropriate support whatever required, including but not limited to medical, nutrition and
physiological support, is made available to the TOP Scheme Athletes during the Term.
Union Sports Ministry initiated the TOP Scheme under the NSDF. The scheme envisages identification of athletes who
are potential medal winners in Olympics and providing support to them for preparation for Olympics.
The National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) was established by the Union Sports Ministry with the objective of
promotion of sports in general and specific sports disciplines and individual sports persons in particular for achieving
excellence at the National and International level.

Odisha Government launched Aahar Scheme to provide subsidised food to urban poor
Odisha Government on 1 April 2015 launched a cheap meal scheme Aahar for providing subsidised food to urban poor.
The scheme was launched by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on the occasion of States Foundation Day, that is, Utkala
Diwas. In the first phase, the scheme was launched in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur and Rourkela. As

part of the scheme, Aahar outlets will be opened in these five cities. These outlets will serve meal comprising of Rice,
Dalma and Pickle at a subsidised rate of 5 rupees with financial assistance from three State run corporations and Tata
Steel. Further under the scheme, each Aahar outlet will cater to one thousand people daily between 11 am and 3 pm.

India launched Operation Raahat to evacuate 4000 Indian nationals from Yemen
Operation Raahat was in news on 1 April 2015 as India launched a massive air and sea operation to evacuate over 4000
Indian nationals from Yemen. The operation will involve total of five ships and four aircraft. The operation started after
India got permission to dock its offshore patrol vessel INS Sumitra at the Aden harbor of Yemen. In the evacuation
exercise, 350 Indian nationals were evacuated from Aden to Djibouti by INS Sumitra. The nationals will be flown to
India in two Air Force C-17 Globemasters. The 350 evacuated people belong to different states of India and they are
Kerala (206), Tamil Nadu (40), Maharashtra (31), West Bengal (23), Delhi (22), Karnataka (15), and Andhra
Pradesh/Telangana (13). The complete rescue operation was overseen by Minister of State for External Affairs General
(retd.) VK Singh. Beside INS Sumitra, two more Indian Navy Ships namely INS Mumbai and INS Tarkash have also
sailed for Yemen to take part in Operation Raahat. Two merchant vessels namely, Kavaratti and Coral will also take
part in the operation along with two 180-seater Airbus A320 planes.
Why Operation Raahat ?
The Operation Raahat was launched to make sure that Indian nationals are not harmed in the military operation that
was started in Yemen in last week of March 2015 by Saudi Arabia and 10 other countries. The military operation was
started against Houthi rebels, who drove out the Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
Who are Houthis ?
They are followers of the Shia Zaidi sect and are officially known as Ansarallah (the supporter of God). The group
began as a movement to preach tolerance and peace in the Zaidi stronghold of North Yemen in 1990s.
The group takes its name from Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi, who launched an insurgency in 2004 against the ruler Ali
Abdullah Saleh that lasted till 2010. They participated in the 2011 Arab Spring inspired revolution in Yemen that
replaced Saleh with Abdrahbu Mansour Hadi. Currently the group controls the Yemeni capital Sana'a and the
Parliament.
RBI approved the amalgamation of ING Vysya Bank with Kotak Mahindra Bank
With this approval of RBI, Kotak will come up as the countrys fourth largest private sector lender.
Rajasthan Government opened women milk bank Jeevan Dhara in Jaipur
Rajasthan Government on 31 March 2015 opened women milk bank Jeevan Dhara in Jaipur. It was inaugurated by
Health Minister Rajendra Rathore. The move is aimed at curbing the high infant mortality rate of Rajasthan. The state
Government launched the bank in collaboration with Norwegian government and JK Lon Hospital.
The bank would store milk from donating lactating mothers that can be used for feeding infants who are deprived of it.

The infants will get free of cost milk from lactating mothers who willingly donate it. The process of donation starts
only after the donors are screened and medically tested for HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis and other diseases. This is followed
by pasteurization of milk that takes around three months. First government owned woman milk bank was opened in
Kolkata and Jaipur is the second in this series. However, the first mothers milk bank in the State was started by a nongovernmental organisation (NGO) in a government hospital in Udaipur. The infant mortality rate in Rajasthan, as per
Sample Registration System (SRS) 2012, stands at 49 per 1000 live births and this is due to high non-availability of
mother's milk on time.
