passes
budget

Preschool fun at the Voorhees Library

Voorhees residents
will see increase
in school tax bill
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun

ZANE CLARK/The Sun

At the April 29 meeting of the

Eastern Camden County Regional School District Board of Education, the board passed the 20152016 school year budget.
For a Voorhees homeowner
with an average assessed home
value at $255,000, the annual Eastern Regional High School District
tax bill will increase $27.66, or 1.1
cents for every $100 of assessed
property value.
The total budget, including operating funds and debt service, totaled $37.24 million, with $24.67
million raised from the local tax
levy.
Of that $24.67 million, about 77
percent, or $19.01 million, comes
from Voorhees residents.

It was Ready, Set, READ! at the Voorhees Library on April 30 when childrens librarian Wendy Ensor led the preschool-aged children in
attendance through songs and movements, stories, a finger play and a craft.

Committee approves
bond ordinances totaling
more than $3.7 million
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Several
weeks
ago,
the
Voorhees Township Committee
introduced five bond ordinances
totaling a little more than $3.7
million, and at the committees
April 27 meeting, it approved
those ordinances after holding
public hearings on each.
The ordinances approved at the
meeting include bonds for road
improvement projects, improvements to township grounds and
buildings, the purchase of vehicles and equipment for the township, as well as the purchase of
sewer utility equipment and costs
for sewer improvement and
money for the installation of traffic signals.
According to Township Administrator Larry Spellman, the
bonds come on the heels of the recently passed 2015 municipal
budget, which kept municipal
property taxes flat, and the ordinances were passed with no issues and no members of the pub-

lic speaking.
The largest of the bond ordinances passed totaled nearly $1.45
million and was for various township vehicles, including a seniorcitizen bus, a street sweeper, a
compressed natural gas trash
truck, a diesel lawn mower with
attachments for the parks department and six police cars.
Another of the larger bond ordinances passed totaled nearly
$1.4 million for the townships
five-year road program, which includes improvements to Battery
Hill Drive, Hollybrook Way, Barbet Drive, Bronwood Drive,
Poplar Avenue, Great Oak Road,
Camden Avenue, Laurel Road and
Las Brisas Boulevard.
Other
ordinances
totaled
$420,000 for sewer improvements,
including the reconstruction of
pumps at the Main Street and
Evergreen pump stations, and
$343,000 for grounds improvements, include grading and
drainage improvements to Connolly Park and Rabinowitz Field.
In other news:
The Voorhees Township Committee approved two resolutions
that would continue shared service agreements between the township and the Voorhees Township
School District and Eastern Camden County Regional School District in which the Voorhees Township Police Department would
continue to perform community
policing in and around the school
entities.
Spellman said the agreements
started several years ago and
allow for officers to be present at
each of the townships schools
and at Eastern High School as
well.
Spellman said the programs
have been successful, and he didnt see a reason why they wouldnt continue for years to come.
Committee approved the insertion of about $15,000 into the
2015 budget as revenue as a result
of a grant from the NJ Drunk

ts no secret that health insurance

is expensive. Thanks to Obamacare, health insurance is more
obtainable for Americans, but for most
of us, the cost of health insurance
especially through employer-sponsored plans continues to rise.
Theres nothing that we, or our employers, can do about it, unfortunately.
Now that we are required to have
health insurance, we cant just say,
screw it, Ill take a chance and have
no insurance. We are required to pay
up...and up and up and up.
So what can we do? What is in our
control? The obvious answer: Our
health.
The healthier we are, the less likely
we will need to use our health insurance. And the less we need to use our
health insurance, the more likely the
cost of our health insurance will go

down in the future.

Take a look at your health insurance plan, and at others that those
around you have. Most likely, there are
incentives for living a healthy lifestyle.
Join a gym, go three times a week, and
you get a discount on said gym membership. Why? Because the healthier
we are, the less it costs to insure us.
Getting healthier starts at home,
with the food we eat. And the food that
is available for us to eat is getting better all around us.
A great place to start for healthier
options is a local farmers market.

Theyre popping up everywhere, if

you havent noticed.
There are farm markets everywhere, and there are also countless
farm stands and farmers market special events that take place from spring
through fall.
Never been to a farmers market? Its
worth the trip. Not only can you buy
fresh, local produce that is often
cheaper than the supermarkets, you
can also get great ideas and lessons on
how to use the products you buy.
In addition to learning more about a
healthy lifestyle, and purchasing
goods that can help you do so, visiting
a local farmers market is also a nice
change-of-pace for the summer.
So get up, go out and support local
farmers and stores by visiting your
local farmers market. It will be well
worth the trip, now and in the future.

Eastern celebrates 50 years

On May 6, Eastern Regional
High School will celebrate 50
years of excellence in education
with a special program at 6:30
p.m. in the schools Performing
Arts Center.
Eastern has come a long way in
the last five decades. In the beginning, there were oak trees, laurel
and crickets in the leaves. At first
glance, one would think of a
quiet, undisturbed forest inhabited only by small furry animals
and birds. Fifty acres of this
wooded lot would eventually be
put to use as a high school.
In the early 1960s, Berlin Borough, Gibbsboro and Voorhees
Township had educational concerns. Berlin students were being
transported to either Overbrook
or Edgewood High Schools.
Voorhees and Gibbsboro students
were being sent to either Haddonfield or Collingswood High
Schools. Neither the parents nor
students were happy and it was
decided that action had to be

taken.
Ernest Scheiber, then the Camden County superintendent of
schools, appointed a temporary
school board of 11 members to
tackle this dilemma. Reigning
from June 12, 1963 until Feb. 4,
1964, the temporary school board
set the stage and built a firm
foundation for the election of future board members. The three
communities were joined together to form a secondary-school region, and plans for a high school
were developed. An elected board
of nine was assembled and it proposed a bond referendum for the
public to consider. The citizens of
the three communities approved
the referendum and a new high
school was born.
Groundbreaking was held in
the late spring of 1964 and the
original $1.7 million building was
completed in September 1965.
Opening with 35 faculty members
and 495 students, Eastern High

Join us for a spring

bicycle ride
By Freeholder Jeffrey Nash
Camden County
BikeShare
is
sponsoring a series of rides along
featured trails
throughout our
park system. This
spring we will be
highlighting the
Blackwood Rail
Trail in the Blackwood section of
Gloucester Township. Bring
your bike or use one of ours for
a great day in the outdoors.
This new program is a great
opportunity to get out of the
house and on a bike with your
fellow riders. Many municipalities are along the Camden
County Multi-Use Trail Network that provides riders with
hundreds of miles of recreational opportunities.
All rides will leave from the
Lakeland BikeShare repair facility located at 508 Lakeland
Road, Blackwood. Individual
rides are limited to 20 participants so pre-registration is required. Register for a ride by
emailing
us
at
ccbikeshare@camdencounty.co

Please list the number of riders you are registering and the
date(s) you will be joining us in
your email. All rides will begin
promptly at 11:00 a.m. on May
10, June 6 and June 14.
The Camden County Freeholders have made advocating
and implementing more bike
trails and alternative means of
transportation throughout the
region a priority. This public
policy initiative is another opportunity for residents to get
out of their cars and onto a
bike in order to traverse
County trails and roadways.
Whether its a daily commute
to work or riding for recreation
this program provides a sustainable two wheel option for
residents.
The Camden County Bicycle

and
Multi-Use
Trail Master Plan
identified both onroad bike routes
and off-road trail
locations that together will create
an interconnected
trail
network
across
Camden
County. The trail
network provides
residents with new recreational opportunities, while
creating an alternative means
of transportation between destinations such as schools, shopping centers, parks and
recreation facilities, and historic sites, both within each
municipality and throughout
the county.
You can help give those who
dont have their own bicycle an
opportunity to ride by becoming a volunteer for Camden
County BikeShare. We are always looking for volunteers
with bicycle repair experience,
those willing to train others
and those willing to learn to repurpose the bikes. In addition
to experienced bicycle mechanics and trainers, BikeShare is
seeking volunteers to staff
their local distribution points.
If you are interested in volunteering your time to the Camden

Driving Enforcement Fund.
According to Spellman, the
grant is something the township
receives every year and is used
for the Voorhees Township Police
Department to conduct drunk
driving enforcement checks and
stops throughout the township.
Committee passed a resolution classifying employees of the

township who work for the township 30 or more hours per week as
full-time employees.
The state-mandated classification would now allow those working for the township 30 or more
hours per week to enroll in the
New Jersey Health Benefits Program, but according to Spellman,
the township does not have parttime employees who averaged 30
or more hours of work per week.
The next meeting of the

County hosts bike rides

The Camden County Bike
Share will be sponsoring a series
of rides along featured trails in
Camden County. This spring
highlighted will be the Blackwood Rail Trail in the Blackwood
section of Gloucester Township.
Bring a bike or use one of the programs.
This is a great opportunity to
get out of the house and on a bike
with your fellow riders, said
Freeholder Jeff Nash, liaison to
the Camden County BikeShare.
Many municipalities are along
the Camden County Multi-Use
Trail Network that provides riders with hundreds of miles of
recreational opportunities.
All rides will leave from the
Lakeland Bike Share repair facility located at 508 Lakeland Road,
Blackwood.
Individual rides are limited to
20 participants so pre-registration is required. Register for a
ride by emailing ccbikeshare@
camdencounty.com.
Please list the number of rid-

ers registering and the date(s)

joining in the email. All rides will
begin promptly at 11 a.m. on the
following dates: Sunday, May 10,
Saturday, June 6 and Sunday,
June 14.
The Camden County Freeholders have made advocating
and implementing more bike
trails and alternative means of
transportation throughout the region a priority, Nash said. This
public policy initiative is another
opportunity for residents to get
out of their cars and onto a bike
in order to traverse county trails
and roadways. Whether its a
daily commute to work or riding
for recreation this program will
provide a two-wheel option for
residents.
Those interested in volunteering time to the Camden County
Bike Share program or who have
a bicycle to donate, please contact
the Camden County Division of
Environmental Affairs at (856)
858-5241 or email ccbikeshare@

AWA hosts Paws and Feet Run 5K May 16

Animal Welfare Associations,
Annual Paws and Feet Run 5K
Race and Doggie Fun Day is
scheduled for Saturday, May 16,
2015 at Cooper River Park in
Pennsauken. The AWA, located
in Voorhees, counts on the money
raised from the event to provide

shelter and medical care to more

than 2,000 homeless dogs and cats
AWA adopts out each year. Last
year, animal lovers and members
of the community help raise
more than $100,000 for the animals making it the highest-grossing event in AWA history.
This years theme is Superheros, and the fundraising goal is
set for $110,000 said Maria
Clarke, AWAs director of events,
business and community relations. Thousands of people participated in the run and walk in
2014, but Paws and Feet is more
than just a race and walk Its a
celebration of the human animal
bond. We believe that ordinary
people do extraordinary things
for pets, we see this every day in
our work and through our interactions with people. We want to
encourage folks to unleash their
inner superhero and help us raise
the funds necessary for us to be
able to help more people and pets
in 2015.

After the race/walk, people

and their dogs can participate in
the fun-filled day of Superherothemed activities, grab a bite to
eat, shop for pet-related items
from our vendors and view adoptable animals from non-profit animal shelters and rescue groups.
Returning this year are the Jersey Disc Devils and their High
Flying K-9 Athletes. Six of their
performance dogs will dazzle attendees with their high-flying
leaps in the air. Police working
dogs will wow with their amazing
skills. Dogs can bob for hot dogs,
play musical sit, run through the
agility course, romp in the doggie
swimming pools and more. Visit
the signature Bark-tini Bar for
Dogs for a Joker-tini or K9
Kerpunch and participate in the
Doggie Superhero Costume Contest. Want to be a part of the fun?

Color-A-Thon fundraiser is May 30

COLOR-A-THON
Continued from page 7
totaling more than 175 today.
The original curriculum included very basic courses with
only one level of English and history offered. The language department
taught
Spanish,
French, German and Latin. The
science department offered the
basics in general science, biology,
chemistry and physics. Mathematics was divided into general
math I and II, technical math, algebra I and II, geometry, and a
course called Fourth Year Math.
Easterns curriculum has
changed significantly since the
1960s and now offers more than
250 courses, including 21 advanced placement programs, as
well as other college preparatory
courses, as well as studies in the
fine, practical and performing
arts. Curriculum is taught in
state-of-the-art learning facilities.
Many organizations were started when the school first opened.
Several of these groups have
withstood the test of time and are
still maintained today. They include the marching band, student
council, National Honor Society
and competitive sports.
The original sports program
had only freshman and junior
varsity levels of competition
until the first senior class was included. Fall sports recognized
cross-country, football and field
hockey. Winter sports included
boys basketball, wrestling and a
limited girls basketball program
that did not engage in league
competition. Spring heralded
boys track and baseball. Today,
Easterns athletic program totals
26 varsity level competitive sports
teams, including Easterns field
hockey team, which has won 16
consecutive New Jersey Group IV
State Championships dating back
to 1999 and has long been recognized as a national power.
The original physical plant of
the school has had two additions.
The first was built in 1970 at a
cost of $495,000 and the second in
1975 at a cost of $3.7 million.
In 2003, the sending districts

approved the addition of six

classrooms, five science laboratories, a technology classroom, a
teachers room and restrooms to
the Intermediate High School via
a bond referendum. As part of the
referendum, additional space was
added to the Intermediate High
School cafeteria, and an updated
physical education complex was
constructed. This complex now
houses a state-of-the-art weight
room, an athletic trainers office
and treatment area, two coaches
rooms and a meeting room.
In September 2013, the Intermediate and Senior High Schools
were combined to form Eastern
Regional High School.
Technology in the early days
was limited to manual typewriters, adding machines and primitive calculators. Today, Eastern
boasts a state-of-the-art television
studio used to inform students
and the general public of events
and programs. Students have
moved from using only textbooks
and periodicals for information
to computer-based workstations
and laptops with wired and wireless Internet access to broaden
their research horizons. The district maintains 11 computer labs,
700 desktops, 700 iPads and 240
laptops.
Easterns first students chose
the Viking as the schools mascot,
along with the schools colors of
cardinal, navy and white. Over
the years, students and staff have
proudly worn the schools colors
and called themselves Vikings.
The Eastern athletic program
is one of the finest in the Olympic
Conference and in the state of
New Jersey. The schools 26 boys
and girls athletic teams are supported by some of the best facilities available. The football, field
hockey, soccer, lacrosse, baseball
and softball teams are provided
the opportunity to play under
the lights. In addition, the football, field hockey, soccer and
lacrosse fields, along with the
baseball infield, now feature
Field Turf.
In addition to its academic, athletic and arts programs, Eastern
provides more than 40 school
clubs. Special events are still a
tradition at Eastern, including
the annual Sophomore Cotillion,

Junior Prom and Senior Prom.

Student council continues to play
a proactive role, providing leadership opportunities for students.
Eastern has annually earned a
rating of High Performing by
the state Department of Education and is often cited as one of
the states premier high schools.
NEWSWEEK magazine, in compiling its annual review of high
schools throughout the country,
selected Eastern Regional High
School as one of Americas top
schools.
As the mayor of Voorhees, I
have been honored and privileged
to participate in 11 of Easterns
commencement ceremonies. Two
of my greatest memories as
mayor were presenting diplomas
to my son, Matthew, and my
daughter, Marie, upon their graduation from this outstanding
school.
On behalf of the Township
Committee and the Voorhees
community, congratulations to
Eastern Regional High School for
helping mold the lives of thousands of our young people over
the last half century.
The annual Animal Welfare
Association Paws & Feet 5K Race
& Doggie Fun Day is May 15 from
9 a.m. to noon at the Cooper River
Park, Pennsauken. This 3.1 mile
run or walk is a great way for animal lovers to support AWA's mission of helping pets and people.
The day is full of great activities
including pet contests, an agility
course, pet demonstrations and
entertainment. This year's Paws
& Feet theme is Superheroes. All
the money raised goes toward the
adoption center and the care of
homeless animals. For more information contact Maria Clarke,
director of Events, Business and
Community Relations, at (856)

or
events@awanj.org.
On Saturday, May 30, our
schools will hold a Color-A-Thon
from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Connolly
Park. (Registration begins at 8
a.m.) Money raised will support
the Parent Faculty Associations
of VMS, ET Hamilton, Osage and
Kresson Schools to help fund student and school needs. For more
information or to register online,

Were able to maintain the

when we had all the budgets defeated, as many budgets were defeated in the state of New Jersey,
Melleby said. Weve been able to
build some of our programs back
and maintain them.
Also regarding athletics, the
sports activity fee is budgeted to
remain the same, at $125 per student or $250 per household, and
no other fees are being added.
Melleby said the district instituted the fee about five years ago,
as did many other school districts
at the time, and as a result of the
fee, the district was able to raise

A new position was also budgeted for one special education

students registering for the 20152016 school year with individual
education plans and growing
needs in the area of special education.
Also in the budget are funds to
purchase a new textbook series

Several capital projects have
also been budgeted for, and at the
meeting, district business administrator Fred Wright went over
the projects in detail.
The projects will be paid for

over a period of several years and

will not require any new money
to be raised by taxes.
Projects outlined by Wright include the replacement of the
bleachers in gymnasiums 2 and 4,
replacement of stage lighting in
the auditorium, the construction
of a marching band and athletics
equipment storage building, the
replacement of a marching band
platform, the construction of an
outdoor climbing wall, the replacement of lights in the school
parking lot and exterior of the
building, and the construction of
a sidewalk in the schools courtyard area.
Wright said the bleachers do
not have the proper railings to
comply with handicap accessible
requirements and must be extended and withdrawn manually,
and the district has the fear that
an injury may occur, as those
pushing the bleachers have reported trouble lining up properly.
The new bleachers will be electric and will extend and withdraw
by remote control.
The new parking lot lights will
be LED lights and will have an expected 17-year life span, which
would cut down on the necessity
of the district renting a lift to replace burnt out bulbs, as is the
current situation.
The marching band and athletics storage building would be
built using a wall already in place
at the end of the schools parking
lot near the tennis courts. The
building will allow the marching
band to store equipment much
closer to where it practices.
According to Wright, the outdoor climbing wall is a trend various schools are starting to show
interest in, and was a request by
the physical education department for use in team-building exercises.
With the auditorium stage
lighting, only six of the original
16 color light scrollers are functioning, and they have been determined to be past the point of repair.
