offers a specialist high skills major in environment.

theU.S.GreenBuildingCouncil,todayannouncedtheGreenestSchoolonEarthfor
2015:DunbartonHighSchoolinPickering,Ontario,Canada.
GreenestSchoolonEarthisanannual
competitionintendedtoshowhow
sustainabilitycanbewovenintothe
infrastructure,culture,andcurriculum
ofaK12school.TheCenterforGreen
Schoolsdefinesagreenschoolasone
withzeroenvironmentalimpact
(includingenergy,water,waste,and
carbon),apositiveimpactonoccupant
healthandperformance,and100
percentenvironmentallyliterate
graduates.

recognitiongoestotheschoolthatis
definingwhatitmeanstolive,breathe,
andteachwholeschoolsustainability,

GreenSchools,said.DunbartonHighSchoolisanexcellentexampleofaschoolthat
engagesitsstudentsateveryturn,placingtheminthedriversseatandempoweringthem
toimprovetheirenvironmentinsideandout.WearepleasedtorecognizeDunbartons
effortstoimprovetheircommunity,enhancethebiodiversityoftheregion,andelevate
youngmindstoahigherorderofthinkingaboutsustainablepractices.
Overthelastfiveyears,newenergyefficientwindows,insulation,andlowerwattage
lightinghavebeeninstalledatDunbarton,whichwasbuiltinthe1960s.Theschooloffers
aspecialisthighskillsmajorinenvironmentandengagesstudentsthroughcoursework
andextracurricularactivitiesrelatedtothenaturalsurroundings.Theschoolfeaturesan
outdoorclassroomfor40,a500sqmpollinatorgarden,andarooftopsolarwater

atDunbarton,said.InPickering,wereceivenothingbutsupportforoursustainability
initiativesfromtheboard,PickeringCity,localbusinesses,parents,universities,and
NGOs.Theyallprovideourstudentswithopportunitiestodeepentheirunderstandingof
sustainablepracticesandwiththechancetotakeactiontomakePickeringand
DunbartonHighSchooldemonstrablymoresustainable.Thisiswhattheworldneedsto
adapttoachangingfuture:youngpeoplepreparedtotakeactioninasupportive
community.
ThomasMueller,presidentandchiefexecutiveofficeroftheCanadaGreenBuilding
Council,added:Dunbartonisanexceptionalexampleofaschoolthatrecognizesand
integratessustainabilityintoeducationandoperations.Changesweremadetotheold
buildingtoreducecarbonemissionsandprovideahealthierindoorenvironmentforstaff
andstudents,theircurriculumemphasizesthevalueofprotectingandrestoring
ecosystemsandprovidesstudentswithhandsonexperience,andtheircommunity
engagementbringspeopletogethertotakeactionwithapositiveimpactonthe
environment.
TheGreenestSchoolonEarthdesignationincludesa$1,000awardtobeusedfora
sustainabilityinitiative.Dunbartonplanstouseitsawardtodevelopagardenand
construct10additionalbeecondominiumsitwillsharewiththelocalcommunity.
