Preface
Sociolinguistics is a textbook designed for EN 468 Language and Society which is
a required course for the fourth-year students majoring in English within the School of Humanities and
Tourism Management, Bangkok University.
The purpose of this material is to introduce a systematic study of the correlation
between language behavior and social factors such as social class, gender, occupation, ethnicity,
etc. It also aims to help students improve their skills and knowledge needed to use the English
language to communicate with others effectively and successfully.
In order to serve the purposes, each chapter consists of a short discussion of basic
sociolinguistic principles in order to understand various uses of the English language which are
influenced by social factors. A set of questions at the end of each chapter provides students with
practical guidelines for checking their understanding of the main points or important terms
introduced in that lesson, and learning how to apply those principles to their own experiences.
Most of the examples are taken from the English language to encourage students to look at real
examples of everyday spoken and written English and how it influences the listeners.
I would like to thank my friends and students for encouraging me to write this
material and for their helpful feedback which helped develop the content in a more useful way. I
also wish to thank all the people who have helped at each stage in the preparation of this book. I
especially wish to express my thanks to Philip Mathias who has read and offered his useful
comments and suggestions on the material.
Heartfelt thanks go to Asst. Prof. Dr. Somyot Wattanakamolchai for his continuous
support, enthusiasm and encouragement, and for helping me with the computer work. Without
him, this book would not have been possible.
Finally, I am also very grateful to Robert Marquart who patiently read and helpfully
provided me with comments to make many needed improvements to this edition.
