Dr. Steve Cummings received the 2015
Gabriel Smilkstein Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Growth and Development of
Family Medicine Education from the Group on
Global Health of the Society of Teachers of
Family Medicine. This award is named in honor
of Dr Smilkstein, who was very active in the promotion of family medicine education world-wide.
Dr. Cummings response to the award, I
am truly honored by the recognition. Indeed, international family medicine development was my
stated goal when applying to the MH FM residency in 1979. In those days there was a lot more
room to chart one's course through the program.
I managed to carve 3 months out of Pawtucket
for electives in the emergency tent of the CamSteve Cummings on left
bodian refugee camp on the Thai border and the surgical service at the Mellon Hospital in Haiti. It was a case of back to roots. I didn't start pre-med
until 10 years out of college (Brown '63), almost all spent in relief and resettlement work between
Algeria '63-65 and Vietnam '65-70. The Vietnam Family Medicine Development Project which I
co-founded in 1996 marked a slow circle back to reprise a social service role at a time when U.S.Vietnam reconciliation was just beginning to gain traction. Much thanks goes to the Brown program where I have continuously found support and encouragement.

News from the STFM Conference in Orlando, FL

Melissa Nothnagle reports, We reunited with many Brown alums
who are now teachers of family medicine, including Chris Bositis (Lawrence
FMR), Jess Early (Tufts FMR), Mary Beth Sutter (University of New Mexico
MCH Fellowship), Nirali Bora (Grand Rapids FMR), Kohar Jones (Univ of
Chicago), Sarah Morchen (Crozer-Keystone FMR, PA), Tu Mai Tran (United
Family Health Care, Shanghai, China), Grace Shih (University of Washington
FMR), James Breen (Cone Health FMR, Greensboro, NC) and Jodi Roque
(University of North Carolina FMR). Other alums whose collaborative work
was represented but who couldn't be here in person are Meg Lekander Dobson (University of Michigan FMR, just had baby #3 Corinne) and Amity Rubeor (Brown FM Sport Medicine Fellowship, busy at Sports Med conference). And of course it was
great to see our beloved former FCC medical director Arnold Goldberg! The enormous Brown FM
posse presenting our research at STFM in Orlando included current residents CK Berkowitz, Melissa
Mackel, Krissy Conner, Sam Greenburg, faculty Dave Anthony, Julie Taylor, Jordan White, Fadya El
Rayess, Anna Filip, Melissa Nothnagle, Nicole Siegert, Sue Magee, Steve Cummings, and Brown medical students Angela Yang and Meeka Gandhi.

Sara Watson 15 Was named the RI Academy of Family Physicians Resident of
the Year.
Cameron Nienaber 13 Is engaged to Dan Kay (a lawyer in
NYC) and will be married on Aug 29th. They got engaged on
Sept 22nd, 2014 in Yosemite.
Jordan White 09 Received the Profiles in Competence Award - Ability
IV: Professionalism Award from STFM.
Nirali Bora 09 Announces the arrival of her son, Arav in October. Arav joins
older brother Ravi.
Melissa Nothnagle02 Received the Program Director Recognition Award,
Bronze level from the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors, American
Academy of Family Physicians.
Dave Anthony 00 Recently received the Society of Family Medicine Innovation Award
for his FM cases.
Rabin Chandran99 Was named Physician of the Year by the RI Academy of
Family Physicians.
Joanne Wilkinson '98 Lives in Melrose, MA and Narragansett, RI and is currently working in the Boston University Department of Family Medicine doing a
combination of research, medical student teaching, clinical work, mentoring fellows and most important, being a mom to Maggie (7). She is in RI frequently on
the weekends especially in the summer and can be reached at jwilkmd@gmail.com.

Meet Our New Fellows!

Melissa Mackel will become our second Sports
Medicine Fellow. She will graduate from the Brown Family Medicine Residency this June and she
also graduated from Lake Erie
College of Osteopathic Medicine
and Penn State University.

Folosade Ajayi will become a Maternal Child

Health Fellow. She comes to

us from Morehouse Family
Medicine in Atlanta, GA.
And graduated from Dartmouth Medical School. She
received her MPH from the
Alpert Medical School. She
will be based at Womens
Care in Pawtucket.

Best wishes to our Academic Social Worker, Kim Rickler, who left the
Department of Family Medicine after almost 20 years. She contributed so
much to the department and will miss her dearly. We wish her the best of luck
in private practice!
