Course Description
This is an introductory course in applied statistics and probability. The methods we present
form the key foundation for the engineer in both descriptive and analytical methods for dealing
with the variability in observed data. We take an engineering perspective in this course,
especially in our examples and exercises. Our intent is to give our students an understanding of
the methodology of applying statistics and probability, especially in real problems with real
data. We cover such topics as sample space, random variable, probability and conditional
probability, distributions and densities, statistical inference and regression.

Course Rules
Lectures:
Switch off your mobile phones or switch them to the silent/vibration mode during class.
Refrain from talking and chatting in class.
Homework (Assignments and Project):
Please hand in your homework to the assignment box ((Locker No. B02, 5/F, William
M.W. Mong Engineering Building) on the prescribed due day before 5:00 p.m.
No late homework will be accepted.
According to the Universitys regulation, every assignment must accompany by a
SIGNED DECLARATION of originality; assignments without such a declaration will
NOT be marked.
The declaration form is available for download from:

Examinations:
NO make-up mid-term examination will be provided under any circumstances. If the
situation seems inevitable (e.g., illness with a doctors letter), then we will inform you
what options other than a make-up mid-term examination you can have.
Final examination will be held on the date scheduled by the University and it will not be
optional. If you could not sit for the final examination, you must apply in writing to the
Registrar for permission of absence. In case of illness/injury, the application must be
accompanied by a doctors letter certifying that you are unfit to take the examination.
