c) Target mean strength of concrete

For a tolerance factor of 1.65 and using Table 1, the target mean strength for the specified
characteristic cube strength is given by
fck = fck+ ts
= 30+ (4x 1.65) = 36.6 N/mm2

d) Selection of water cement ratio

From fig.1 of IS: 10262-1982, for the free water cement ratio for the target mean
strength of 36.6 N/mm2 is 0.4
e) Estimation of entrapped air
From Table 3 of IS10262-1982, for the specified maximum size of aggregate of 20mm,
the amount of entrapped air in the wet concrete is 2 percent.
f) Selection of Water and Sand content
For 10mm maximum size aggregate, Sand conforming to grading zone III
Water content per cubic meter of concrete

= 186 Kg

Sand content as percentage by absolute volume

= 35%
=35-3.5
=31.5%

g) Determination of cement content

Water cement ratio
Water
Cement

= 0.4
= 186 lit
= (186/ 0.4)
= 465 Kg/m3

But as per IS code the maximum cement content should be 450 Kg/m3.
Therefore, the cement content = 450 Kg/m3

h) Determination of fine & coarse aggregate Contents

For the specified maximum size of aggregate, the amount of entrapped air is in the wet
concrete is 2%. Taking this into account,
V= [W+(C/Sc) + (1/P) (fa/Sfa)] (1/1000)
Fine Aggregate
0.98 = [186+ (465/3.15) + (1/0.315) (fa/2.68)] (1/1000)
fa = 641.146 kg/m3
Coarse Aggregate
[(1-0.315/0.315)*(641.146)*(2.8/2.6)]
Ca = 1501.038 kg/m3
