Upper Yarra RSL ANZAC Service

Yesterday grade 6 students attended the combined schools ANZAC ceremony at the Upper Yarra RSL. Together
they commemorated the loyalty and sacrifice of our brave service men and women. Students then laid a wreath in
memory of our fallen service men and women. The wreath was made by our students and included laurel and
rosemary both symbols of remembrance.

National Volunteer Week

11th - 17th May
Established in 1989, National Volunteer Week is the largest celebration of volunteers in Australia, and provides an
opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our community and to say thank you to the more than 6 million
Australians who volunteer.
Volunteering Australia, along with its state and territory networks, recognises the valuable contribution each individual
provides by offering their time, skills and passion, continuing to demonstrate Australias proud culture of giving. We
believe that it is important to acknowledge and thank our Emergency Services CFA & SES, who do an amazing job
supporting not just our school but the Upper Yarra community. The CFA & SES support us on a regular basis through assisting at
our country fair/ carols night, attending emergency drills, talking to our students, providing assistance etc.
Our school would not be able to run as efficiently without the continued support of our volunteers - parents, neighbours, friends
and others who volunteer on a daily basis. One of the significant outcomes of this wonderful support is that we further develop
a culture of giving in our school. A spirit of support and helping is contagious. So a huge thank you and well done to our many
volunteers you are all an extremely valuable part of our school team.

Smoke Alarms
The CFA is reminding families that its not too late to change the batteries in their smoke
alarms. Operations Officer, Cliff OConnor said with the end of Daylight Savings falling on
Easter this year a lot of families might have missed their usual routine to replace batteries
when they changed their clocks.
If one piece of equipment in your home is going to save your life it is your smoke alarm,
said Operations Officer OConnor.
That is because you cant smell smoke when you are sleeping all your senses are
reduced.
Changing the batteries in your smoke alarm only takes five minutes. Anyone who thinks
their smoke alarm might be more than ten years old should have it replaced.
The CFA recommends:
Monthly: test smoke alarms by pressing the test button with a broom handle
Annually: gently dust around the outside cover of your smoke alarm
Annually: replace your 9-volt battery at the end of daylight saving
Every 10 years: replace your smoke alarm units and when you do, consider installing

10-year sealed smoke alarms.

With the weather starting to

cool down, we are needing
to keep warm. If your
child/ren are wearing
jumpers or jackets please put
their name visible on the
inside. So if they get lost
they can be returned. If you
could check your child/ren
jumpers, etc, just in case
they may have picked
someone elses up by
mistake. If that has
happened could you please
return them to the school
office so they can find their
way back to the rightful
owner.
