There is imuch red tape to unravel before that can happen but the prospects are very

the same day at about 7:00 p.m.

report that we have received a very

generous portion|from their estate. This has gone to three churches to help them in the
their church buildings. The Swarupnagar church met in their uncompleted
buiIding for Chr stmas and New Year's but they have now returned to the building of the

construction of

Seventh Day Adventists while construction continues.

The Neeper, Mi iisouri,Church has been struggling for survival for many years but they have
faithful and generous in supporting many missionary enterprises. They
have supported us for more than 35 years during which time many of the old timers have gone
to a better place.

A new spark of life has entered their lives with the establishment oT' a

nea rby.

This has in turn sparked off

a project to

replace the lOO year old

church bui1ding with something more inviting.

We are very happy for them and for the hope
for the growth o the Lord's church in that area
In continuing l)ursuit of a B.D. degree, I am scheduled to take four examinations in April.
They are on "1 Corinthians," "Principles of Preaching and Teaching." "Modern Religious and
Secular Movementi
and "Indian Christian Theology.''
Next year when I am in the U.S., I
wi11 probably be working on Greek and "New Testament Survey."
I would like to return to
India early in 990 in plenty of time for next year's exams.
During January I spent two weeks at the Union Biblical Seminary in Pune, 27 hours south
of here, a nice place to go when chilly winds are blowing up here in north India.
For

Easter I have be^n invited to preach in the state of Bihar, 20 hours east of here.
The news of ou

now employed a

Indian Income Tax case is not very good. V/e lost the first round and have

^wyer who has appealed the case.

The Income Tax officer is a lady who

is

giving trouble to most of the Christian institutions in this part of India. In the meantime
we are making ad.jptations. We are now making many payments with dollar checks which are deposited in the
:counts of the recipients without going through our accounts. We have also
formed a second committee,
"The Kanpur Center, for Christian Studies," which will deal exclus i vely wi th B ble College students.

It would

also b^ good to make a separate entity of

the Bible Book l^ore but we haven't gotten that far yet.
In the last is sue of Harter Throbs I 'reported the continuing survival of old Ramadhar of
Hami rpur hut he ."iss. sj_nce departed. His son'iiD-^law- tcl d us that Ramadha-r had a"^oGd dea^h-'.'

Amarjeet conti lues to take a computer

course while working

for us in the book store. He

me places on the scooter after dark. Computerization is gradually advancing in India bri iging some relief to a long-suffering public at railway stations, banks and
other places.
I t: is also hoped that computerization will also lessen corruption (bribes)

NEWS OF RALPH "BUD" HARTER, MISSIONARY

RUNNING

START

With the Lord's generous help 1 reached Clinton

on May 6th

and only the Lord's help got

me here because 1 had reached "the end of my tether" and was very near to cancelling out.
On my last day in India one of my papers was missing and there was nothing that anyone
could do about it; but here I am.
Steve Dunham of Tom's River, N.J., came up to N.Y.C. and took me down to their home for

two nights, then drove me over to Philadelphia. His wife Rhonda is the daughter of the
late Henry and Mildred Neumeister of Orrvllle, Ohio. The next night 1 stoped v-^ith Mr. and
Mrs- Wm. Eraser near Harrisburg and Hershey, Pa. At the moment 1 am at Clinton, Ohio but
I will soon be taking off for Michigan, Missouri and Iowa.
1 must be back in Clinton by
June 10th. My address is Box 85, Clinton, Ohio A^2I6; and Telephone No. 1-216-882-^401.
The Swarupnagar Kanpur Church met in their uncompleted building for Christmas and New
Year's, and now they are meeting there regularly since April 30th. More than 100 heard me

preach there just before I left for the U.S.A. I also baptized six young
19th. The building is far from finished but it already looks impressive.

people on March

I did not get to visit Pakistan due to visa problems and now I have another visa prob
lem that might necessitate my return to India in December. 1 would like to stay In the
U.S. until March and 1 am corresponding with the Indian Consulate about it. At Kulpahar,
Linda Stanton has been given an order to leave India without any reason given. The order is
under appeal. Linda has been a blessing to everyone and it will be a great loss to us
if she has to leave. The Indian Government does not allow new missionaries to take up
residence in India although visitors can come in for up to six months.

The exams this year went off very well

and 1 am hoping for

last year. 1 am now studying Greek for the 1990 exams.

My sister Phyllis will be celebrating her birthday in

She and her husband are

the meantime we have

divided the 17 year old "Kalislya Sahayak Sanstha" into three organizations: The K.S.S.
will take care of benevolence; the "Kanpur Christian Book Sockety" will take care of

literature; while the

"Kanpur Center for

projects. Some payments will be made with

Christian

There are lots of helpers managing things during my absence. The forming of new commit
tees has itself brought in 14 additional helpers. Amarjeet Singh is taking care of the
book store while SanI is taking care of the house and scholarships.
My driving license usually exprles while I am out of the U.S. which causes complica
tions when I come back, and this time they have some new rules. Chuck Jeffries of Clinton
is in charge of getting me on the road.

Frankfort, Germany, is half-way between New Delhi and Mew York City. It takes 8 hours
from New York to Frankfort, and another 8 hours from Frankfort to New York. The stopover
in Frankfort should be at least two hours.
