FELLOW-VETERANS WE WILL LOSE THE HAZLEWOOD LEGACY ACT WHICH WE FOUGHT SO
HARD FOR, if you do not get involved NOW. Even if this WRONG and UNFAIR measure does not
affect you and your family, we ask you to support every other Texas Veteran and his/her
eligible family member, by taking immediate action, as requested below. The amount of hours
which would be available to an eligible dependent of a Texas Veteran would be reduced from
150 hours, to 60 hours barely enough to obtain an Associate Degree.
These EXTREMIST NON-VETERAN TEXAS LEGISLATORS want to change the rules after the
game has been played. They want to rob our Veteran families of a hard-earned entitlement
to a college education that would better prepare them for success in life. How much sense
does that make?
Oh and REMEMBER THE NAMES of those who voted against Veterans, next election time.

If you have not done so already, please forward this request for grassroots help to your members. The
preservation of the Hazlewood Act depends on Texas Veterans strongly voicing their OPPOSITION to HB
3572.
Please distribute as broadly as possible and urge your members to contact their State Representative
and especially House leadership identified in the following message.
Thank you for your support.

The following is for your information and distribution to your members. Please ask your grassroots
members to contact their State Representative, identify who they are, which Veteran Service
Organization they represent, and ask their Representative to OPPOSE HB 3572.
All emails and calls to Representatives should reference HB 3572 by Rep. Zerwas that is
currently in Calendars Committee awaiting referral to the House. SB 1735 by Sen. Birdwell is
the companion that passed out of the Senate yesterday with several amendments. TCVO also

opposes SB 1735. The focus of TCVO and that of any individuals or organizations that are
emailing and calling to oppose this legislation, should reference HB 3572.
It is critical that you pass this message on to your members immediately. HB 3572 may be heard
as early as Friday 5/8/15 or very early next week.
In addition it is vitally important that the Texas House leadership is also contacted and made aware
that the Texas Veterans community is opposed to HB3572 since the Bill provisions call for:
Six years of service to be eligible for Hazlewood benefits. This is a drastic increase in the current statute,
which is 180 days. More importantly, six years of service intentionally cuts out the majority of Veterans
who serve for four years.
SB 1735 will require that a Veteran or their child utilize all Hazlewood benefits within 15 years of being
honorably discharged from the military. Unfortunately this will disqualify a majority of Veterans' children
from utilizing the education benefit earned by their parent on the battlefield.
SB1735 will cap the Legacy portion of Hazlewood at 60 total credit hours. This is counterintuitive to a
Veteran's child completing their degree. It will limit it to 2 years and then eliminate this financial aid for
that student for their remaining two years thereby hindering their chances for graduating with an
undergraduate degree.
House leadership to be contacted are:
Speaker of the House, Joe Straus; office: 512-463-1000
John Zerwas, Chair, Higher Education Committee; office: 512-463-0657
John Otto, Chair, Appropriations Committee; office: 512-463-0570
Rick Miller, Member Appropriations Committee; office: 512-463-0710
Kenneth Sheets, Member Local & Consents Calendar Committee: 512-463-0244
Please inform your members that the Lone State Veterans Association, and the Student Veteran
Association have ~3,700 supporters who have signed the following petition. Please encourage
your grassroots members to not only contact their State Representative and House leadership asking
them to OPPOSE HB 3572, but to also sign the petition.
