Cut out a pair of paper rectangles approximately 2 inches by 6 inches and another

pair approximately 1 inch by 3 inches. Plain printer paper works well.

2

Rolling the airfoil

Make two airfoils out of the larger rectangles. Roll the paper in your fingers bringing
the long sides together with a slight overlap, 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Be careful not to crease
the rounded leading edge of the airfoil. Fasten the overlapped trailing edge along its
length with some transparent tape. The overlap creates a nice sharp trailing edge
3

Use spaghetti to stifften the rotor arms

Break off two pieces of spaghetti approximately 3 inches long and tape them down
the center of the two smaller pieces of paper. These will become the rotor arms.
4

Folding and taping the rotor arms

Fold the paper around the pasta and tape the long edge in the same way as the airfoil,
but with no overlap.
5

Making holes for the axle

Using a pointy object (e.g. pin, tack, toothpick) poke a small hole in the center of each
rotor arm. Be careful not to break the spaghetti.
6

Make a hole near one end of each airfoil

Also poke a hole in each airfoil near one end. You may want to reinforce the hole with
a piece of tape to keep the end from tearing out.

Putting it together
Lay the airfoils down next to each other approximately 3 inches apart then run a piece
of spaghetti diagonally through the holes you just made. Make sure the rounded
leading edges of the airfoils are facing in opposite directions.
8

Putting it together
Attach the rotor arms on the top and bottom using some tape. Then use the diagonal
spaghetti to square it up. When you've got it square tape the diagonal in place and
break off the excess.
9

Finished
Run a piece of spaghetti through the center holes in the rotor arms to act as an axle.
10
If its breezy, take it outside. Otherwise put it in front of a fan. Hold the axle on both
ends and watch it go. You may need to give it a push or spin the axle with your fingers
to get it started.

How the Darrieus turbine works

Understand how it works.
As the turbine spins in the ambient wind, the wind velocity relative to airfoils
impinges with a sufficient angle of attack to produce lift with a resultant force
directed in front of the axis of rotation of the turbine. This produces a non-zero torque
on the turbine and makes it spin. However when the rotor arm of the turbine is
perpendicular to the wind no lift and therefore no torque is produced, thus the
Darrieus turbine(at least in this configuration) is pushed in spurts may not always start
itself spinning.
