Space

Systems Design I
AE4356
Spring 2015

Prof. Brian Gunter

Course summary
First part of a two-semester capstone design course
Focus on the design process for Earth & planetary S/C
Topics:
Mission architecture
Systems engineering
Requirements deniLon, cost esLmaLon, risk management

SpacecraO design

Emphasis on pracLcal applicaLon of material through

development of mission concept proposals

Example Kepler mission

ObjecLve: to search for Earth-size planets (0.5 to 10
earth masses) in the habitable zone of solar-like stars.
This resulted in the following driving requirements:
A Combined DierenLal Photometric Precision (CDPP) of
20 ppm in 6.5 hrs and the ability to detect a single Earth-
like transit with an SNR > 4
The capability to monitor > 100,000 stars simultaneously
A mission duraLon of at least four years

4

Example Kepler mission Orbit and L/V

Field-of-view (FOV) of the photometer be out of the
eclipLc plane so as not to be blocked periodically by the
Sun or the Moon
An Earth-trailing heliocentric orbit with a period of 372.5
days provides the opLmum approach to meeLng of the
combined Sun-Earth-Moon avoidance criteria within the
Boeing 7925-10L (Delta-II) launch vehicle capability
TelecommunicaLons and navigaLon for the mission are
provided by NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN)

Course ObjecGves
At the end of this course, you should
Be familiar with the life-cycle of a typical space mission,
from concepLon to implementaLon
Know the major sub-systems of a satellite, including their
size/weight, cost, alternate hardware opLons, and
integraLon with other sub-systems
Given high-level mission objecLves, develop a set of
mission requirements and cost esLmates needed to
saLsfy these objecLves
Given a set of mission requirements and budget, develop
one or more candidate satellite systems that would saLsfy
these requirements

Grading

10

Lab assignments: 40%

Quizzes: 5%
Proposal PresentaLon: 20%
Proposal Report: 25%
ParLcipaLon: 10%

Lab Assignments
40% of total grade
Will consist of
Wrinen problem sets
Computer assignments (CAD, Excel, Matlab, etc.)

Goal is to provide applicaLon of concepts presented in

the lectures and the text
Led by TAs, who can answer quesLons
Most work will be done during lab session and due at
the end of the period (excepLon CAD, STK)
3-6p on Wed (Sec A) or Thurs (Sec B)
Bring laptop to labs!
11

Quizzes
At beginning of most lab periods, will answer a series of
short answer quesLons based on that weeks reading
(and including prior weeks reading)
Done via T-square
Must be present for answers to count
Closed book
Should take < 10 min.

12

ParGcipaGon
Reects my percepLon of your level of involvement in
the course
Class/lab anendance
ParLcipaLon in lectures/labs
AcLve parLcipaLon in project team
High response rates for CIOS course surveys

13

Project proposal
Will write a small-team (4 persons) proposal for a nano/
cube-sat mission
IniLal Pre-Phase A studies in AE4356
Down select, and more involved analysis in AE4357

Proposals will address recent NASA SIMPLEx call

Up to 6U cubesat
Deployed from ExploraLon Mission 1 (EM-1) on an Earth-
escape trajectory (Sept 30, 2018 launch)
Must be PPOD compaLble
5 year, $5.6 M cost cap for full life cycle
14

Project proposal
IntenLon is to assemble one or more proposals to be
submined to upcoming AOs and RFPs
In the past, this course has helped support two separate
planetary cubesat proposals (Europa, Mars)
SIMPLEx call may turn into an annual call; if not, there are
other similar calls (UNP, CLI, etc.)

At the end of semester, each team will present their plan

PresentaLon ~15 min, will take place last week of class
Proposal 25 pages, due last class day
Will be a mid-term deliverable for report
15

Project proposal
From these, we will determine what mission concepts to
explore in more detail in AE4357
AE4357 projects involve larger teams (6-8) and more in-
depth analysis
50 page proposal
25 min presentaLon
PresentaLons anended by external panel judges

16

Project proposal
Small, InnovaLve Missions for Planetary ExploraLon (SIMPLEx)

Should start thinking about teams and science objecLves now!
