NOT
THE ASCENSION -
FEASTS
OF OUR
LORD:
How bright and wonderful is this Feast! It is the Pinnacle of all the Feasts of the Lord,
because with it the Sacred and Saving Purpose of the Divine Incarnation and
Inhomination of the Word of God is completed.
For what Purpose did the Son and Word of God become Man, and undergo the Passion,
the Death, the Resurrectionand the Ascension?
All these Events took place so that human nature might not remain below on Earth, but
be raised to Heaven, become Deified and Glorified according to our Creators
original Design.
This, then, was the Purpose for which the Son of God condescended to assume within
His Godly Person [Hypostasis] our human nature, which had fallen from its original
condition, in order to Renew it with His Crucifixion and Resurrection and to raise it
to the Heavenly Heights with His Glorious Ascension, presenting it to God the Father
as the Super-Brilliant Trophy of His Victory.
THE
At the Ascension of Christ, God the Father accepted the First-fruits of our
humanity, and was well pleased - not only by the Worthiness of Him Who
offered it, but also by the Purity of the Offering.
This, then, is the Perfect Victory against sin.
This is the Triumph of our human nature, which could not have descended to a
lower point than that at which it arrived after the Fall of Adam - but neither
could it ascend to a higher point than that at which the New (or Last) Adam
raised it with His Ascension!
THE
GOD
TO MANKIND
OF
CHRIST
FOR MANKIND
Today on the Mount of Olives, Heaven and Earth embrace each other, and Angels
and human beings are United.
On this day, the Chorus of the Apostles greeted their Sweet Teacher with Joy at His
Departure from them, and the Angelic Orders saluted the King of the Heavens
with Ineffable Elation and Joy.
On this day, the Captivity, which the Victor of Death took captive with His
Ascension to the Heights i.e. the souls of the Righteous who have been
Redeemed - beheld their Redeemer with great Exhilaration and Joy.
On this day also, His Mother - the Most Pure Virgin - greeted and sent off Her
Beloved Son Who Ascended into Heaven, where God the Father welcomed His
Only-Begotten Son and seated Him on His right.
On this day, too, on the great Mount of Olives, we are Called to Ascend with our
minds and become eye-witnesses to the Great and Wondrous Events, which
took place there - having as our Guide, St Luke the Theologian, who alone
among the Evangelists narrated with brevity but also with Priestly, and
solemn fashion the Glorious Ascension of our Lord and God and Saviour,
Jesus Christ.

RESURRECTION
The Leader of Life, Who loosened the Bonds of Death by His Resurrection, met with
His Disciples for 40 Days and Confirmed His Resurrection to them by means of
several proofs.
He did not Ascend into Heaven on the Day He Resurrected, because such an Event
would have raised doubts and questions.
Had He done that, many of the unbelievers would have been in a position to project
the argument that the Resurrection was one more dream of pious aspirations,
which easily emerge and more easily disappear.
For this reason, then, Christ remained for 40 Days on Earth, and repeatedly
Appeared to His Disciples, showing them the marks of His Wounds, explaining
to them the Prophesies that He had fulfilled in His Life and Sufferings as Man,
and even eating with them.
THE
-COMB
Our Resurrected Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ had asked for and ate ...a piece of
broiled fish and honeycomb. (LUKE 24:42).
This detail was mentioned for it had a very important allegorical meaning.
With regard to the fish, we know that although it lives in the salty sea, it is not
salty, but sweet. In the same manner, Christ, Who lived in the salty sea of sin
of this world, ... did not commit any sin, and no guile was found in His
Mouth. (ISAIAH 53:9)
Also, Christ remained even more voiceless than the fish when He endured His
Saving Passion and received unheard-of torture and unmentionable insults.
With regard to the honey-comb - honey is sweet and beeswax is Illuminative,[i.e. it is
used for candles that give forth light] so they symbolise the Spiritual Sweetness and
Illumination that our Resurrected Lord Jesus Christ transmits to His Faithful.
The honey or Spiritual Sweetness cures the great bitterness of sin, which is
symbolized by the bitter gall that was offered to our Lord during His
Crucifixion, while the wax of the honey-comb, being Illuminative, Enlightens the
dense darkness of sin, which was symbolised by the darkness that occurred
throughout the world during our Lords Crucifixion.
THE MOUNT
OF
OLIVES
Once Christ had confirmed His Resurrection from the dead to His Disciples
through His Sweet Teaching, and had Enlightened their minds and warmed
their hearts by His Presence, He led them on the Fortieth Day after the
Resurrection to the Mount of Olives, which lies to the East of Jerusalem, which
was fitting for the Ascension to take place because - according to Ancient
Tradition - it is there where our Lord will physically Reappear in all His Divine
Majesty and Glory on the Last Day the Eighth Day - when He will judge all
Creation.
It is there where the Righteous His Faithful Flock - will receive His Great Mercy
while all unrepentant sinners will grieve with an Inconsolable Lamentation!
These two opposite conditions of humanity are denoted by the name of this Mount,
because its peaks are called Mount of Olives whereas its foot is called Valley of
Wailing, which was pre-signified by the prophesy of the Holy Prophet of God,
St Zachariah: ...Then they will look on Me Whom they pierced. Yes, they will
mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one
grieves for a Firstborn And in that Day His Feet will stand on the Mount of
Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the East Thus the Lord my God will come,
and all the Saints with Him...
THE PRESENCE
OF OUR
LADY THEOTOKOS,
THE
Our Lord led His Disciples and our Lady, Theotokos, who had given Birth to Him as
Man, to the Mount of Olives, so that they could witness with their own eyes His
Glorious Ascension.
His Mother after the Flesh had to be present at that Great Glorification of Her Son,
so that She who had been gravely wounded in Her soul due to His Passion,
above all others might commensurably Rejoice by seeing Her Son Ascending
FESTAL MATINS & DIVINE LITURGY HYMNS ASCENSION THURSDAY

into Heaven with Glory, being Worshipped as God by the Angels and being
seated on the Throne of the Most High, above all Angelic Principalities and
Authorities.
The Holy Apostles had to be there also, as eye-witnesses of our Lords Ascension,
and in order to be informed that their Divine Teacher Who they saw ascending
into Heaven, had initially come down from there, and that as He had Promised
- He would wait for them, being the True Word and Son of God and the Divine
Saviour of all mankind.
THE UTTERLY UNFAMILIAR & UNIQUE ASCENSION OF CHRIST
They stood at the middle point of the Mount of Olives. The city of Jerusalem
stretched out before them. The hole at Golgotha, where the Cross of Christ had
stood, was still open. So, too, was the entrance to the Tomb of our Resurrected
Lord, since the great stone that had sealed the entrance was still lying upon the
ground.
Our Saviour turned His Back to the ungrateful city of Jerusalem and glanced
towards the East, as King David the Royal Psalmist had so joyfully expressed it
so many centuries before: Sing to the Lord Who is going up to the Heaven of
the Heavens, towards the East... (PSALM 67:34).
As our Lord took leave of His Faithful Disciples, He raised His pure Hands and
Blessed them for the last time those Divine, Life-giving Hands with which He
Recreated mankind whom He had originally created at the beginning of time,
and which He stretched out upon the Cross due to His Love of all humanity,
thereby uniting those who had been alienated through sin from God - i.e. those
who had become strangers to our Lord.
Just as the eyes of the Disciples could never behold enough the Divine, Sweet Face
of our Lord, He suddenly began to Ascend into Heaven.
Their eyes were fixed on that paradoxical and inexplicable bodily Ascension of our
Lord, until He was concealed by the extraordinary Luminous Cloud that
engulfed Him.
THE MAJESTY
OF THE
ASCENSION
The Holy Prophet of God, St Elijah, had also ascended into Heaven, but his
ascension took place by means of a fiery chariot and fiery horses, because he
was a mere human being who needed Divine Assistence to ascend into Heaven.
Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, however, was God-Man and ascended by His
own Divine Power - by virtue of His own Omnipotence.
The extraordinary Luminous Cloud was the very Presence of God the Holy Spirit
similar to the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, which prefigured His
Glorious Ascent into Heaven.
Just as the Eternal Word and Son of Gods descent and Incarnation were brought
about through the Power and Energy of God the Holy Spirit - according to the
Annunciation of St Gabriel the Holy Archangel of God, who told our Lady,
Theotokos: The Spirit of the Lord will come upon Thee and the Power of the
Most High will overshadow Thee... so it was that our Lord Co-Ascended with
God the Holy Spirit Who follows and Coexists with Him, being Co-Essential
(Homoousion) and being Worshipped and Glorified together with God the
Father and God the Son. (LUKE 1:35)
THE
TWO ANTHROPOMORPHIC
ANGELS
While the Holy Apostles were gazing with astonishment at the Heavenly Sight, two
Angels appeared to them, dressed in white garments, and having assumed
human forms in order to avoid frightening the Disciples.
They were dressed in white so that their chastity might be manifest, as well as the
Enlightening and Joyous Message that they were sent to deliver by Christ, in
order to console them at the moment of their sorrowful parting.
Furthermore, the Angels reminded the Faithful of our Lords Final Instructions, and
that our Lord Jesus Christ, Who is now invisible to us, is seated at the right
Hand of God the Father the position of Great Honour and Equality - and that
as He has Promised us - He will Reappear once again in all His Majestic,

OF
ST JOHN CHRYSOSTOM
BEGINS IMMEDIATELY
The Angels spoke to the Faithful Disciples and Apostles, saying: Men of Galilee,
why do you stand up into Heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from
you into Heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into
Heaven.
The Angels reminded them that our Lord Jesus Christ will Reappear from Heaven,
in His same Immaculate, physical Body, which He had assumed from His All
Pure Virgin Mother, our Lady, Theotokos, which would bear upon it the marks
from the wounds He had received during His Passion.
At that time it was only His Faithful Apostles and Disciples who saw Him
Ascending to Heaven, but when He Reappears, all Creation will see Him
descending from Heaven in all His Majestic, Divine Glory upon the
extraordinary Luminous Cloud. His Glorious Condescension will become the
cause of Blessedness and Joy for those who lived Righteously, but for the
unrepentant sinners, it will be the cause of Eternal Sorrow and Calamity.
THE
IMPACT ON THE
FAITHFUL DISCIPLES
OF THE FIRST
CHURCH
Having heard this Divine Message, the Holy Apostles and Disciples worshipped our
Saviour on his Ascension and, then, joyfully returned to Jerusalem.
Their Joy was overwhelming, because their Faith in their Divine Teacher was
Confirmed and they knew that He was definitely True God Who had Ascended
into Heaven - thereby not abandoning us but Truly Uniting us with Heaven!
They rejoiced because they had received the Blessings of our Saviour before His
Ascension - and it was with His Divine Blessings that the numerically small
Church of Christ subsequently flourished and greatly increased in such a
relatively short time after the Descent of the Holy Spirit, Whose Divine Grace,
Power and Energy enabled the establishment of His One True and Holy Church
throughout the entire world.
THE
Divine Glory - to judge all Creation and especially us human beings - the
living and the dead.
IMPACT ON THE
ANGELIC HOSTS
IN
HEAVEN
While these Great Events occurred on Earth because of Christs Ascension, the
Angelic Hosts of God enjoyed an gigantic, jubilant celebration in Heaven, for
the Angels who had served our Lord throughout His sojourn on Earth and who
accompanied Him at His Ascension, called out to Heaven: Lift up the Gates, O
lift them up! Behold the King has Ascended to Light-Principal Glory!
(EXPOSTEILARION OF MATINS & PSALM 23:7)
Through His Salvific Passion, Christ our Saviour became even more Glorious and
Highly Exalted than before as St Paul the Apostle expressed it: ...having
humbled Himself and having become Obedient unto Death, indeed a Death
by Crucifixion, God Exalted Him highly and granted him the Name that is
above all... (PHILIPPIANS 2:9)
The infinite Glory of the Victor over Hades and Death, which could not be
contained by the small space of Earth, filled the Heavens, so the Angels asked
to be expanded as well on His Appearance!
At the same time, the Heavenly Hierarchies - beholding the human Body to be
transferred above them, were shocked and amazed because - just as we would
be overwhelmed by astonishment and fear on seeing an Angel on Earth, so the
bodiless Angels, seeing a Body raised upon a Cloud, want to know more about
this paradoxical display, and to be twice assured about the Identity of this
King of Glory.
And when they hear that He is the Lord Who is All Powerful in battles, Who fought
the devil and defeated him, and Who now Ascends into Heaven, they obviousely
wondered Who is this superbly Luminous Body, which is vested in Royal Purple:
Who is this that comes from Edom, in crimsoned garments from Bosor, Who
is Glorious in His Apparel? (ISAIAH 63:1)
5.
In other words, the Angelic Hosts wondered Who this Earthly Person was Who
entered Heaven wearing Flesh that is like a superbly bright, Royal Purple
garment.
Edom means Earthly and Bosor means Flesh.
The point of reference, therefore, is that the Glorified Body of Christ our King,
appeared to be red due to His Wounds on His Immaculate Side, His Wrists and
His Feet.

The Joy of the Ascension of Christ is Universal because it extends to both Heaven
and Earth.
The Angels rejoiced in Heaven, because they welcomed their Eternal King, while we
are jubilant on Earth because our Entry into the Eternal Heavenly Jerusalem is
now possible: Clap your hands, all you Nations! Shout with a loud voice of
triumph unto God! (PSALM 46:2)
Let us rejoice on this Feast of Universal Joy, seeing our Lord ascending and opening
once for all the Gates of Heaven so that our human nature, which He bought
with His Most Precious Blood, may enter in with Him.
He Himself confirms this Truth and the living Hope that we, too, will Ascend and
never again be separated from Him, for our Union with Him will be like that of
the members of a Body with its Head, since we are the members of His Body
and He is the Head of us all.
As He was physically Resurrected, we, too, will be Resurrected - and as He was
Glorified in the Flesh, we too will be Glorified and will be forever in the
Presence of our Lord Jesus Christ depending on the choices we make now.
