Art exhibition to be held

ARTIST and teacher
Mark Morris solo exhibition has opened in The
White Lion Street Gallery in Tenby.
Marks work has developed over the years to produce an easy impressionist
style based on accurate
drawing and a firm knowledge and understanding
of painters from Degas to
Sickert, and most recently,
Ken Howard.
Though working en plein
air whenever he has the
opportunity, Marks output
is often studio based and
concentrated into the
school holiday periods. He
paints in acrylic, working
on a broken background
and allowing strong colours
to leak through.
With several paintings
in progress at the same
time, Mark works in stages
with each one until he is
satisfied with the result,
taking anything from two

days to as many months to

pronounce one finished.
His preferred subjects
are peopled townscapes.
He has always enjoyed
painting Tenby for the
atmospheric light conditions here: whether its the
light sparkling on the sea or
the contre jour effect seen
at particular times of day
along Tenbys streets and
alleyways. He is especially drawn to St Georges
Street with the busyness of
holiday makers returning
at the end of the afternoon,
but in contrast the tranquillity and unique atmosphere
of the area around the
Tudor Merchants House
also attracts him.
With the Tudor Merchants House series, he
departs from his normal
style, using several images
to capture a wider view at
different spots outside the
house, resulting in unusual
pieces that illustrate the

Harbour Beach, Tenby by Mark Morris.

looming height of the buildings overhead in Bridge Street and Quay Hill.
Marks largest works are new pieces of
London, his favourite haunt overlooking the South Bank. A painting called
Winter afternoon has a wonderful
soft light effect contrasting with the

hustle and bustle of people watching

the buskers beneath Golden Jubilee
Bridge.
The exhibition features around 40
new painting and runs until May 28.
The gallery is open from 10am until 5
pm every day, except for Wednesday.

A celebration of Russian music

THEATR Gwaun will be

showing Ridley Scotts masterpiece Blade Runner (12A)
on Saturday, May 16.
Burnt out cop Deckard
(Harrison Ford) is a Blade
Runner in near future Los
Angeles.
Blade Runners target replicants, which are highly
sophisticated artificial intelligence, visually indistinguishable from humans.
The use of replicants on
Earth is banned and they
are exclusively utilized for
dangerous or menial work on
off-world colonies. Replicants
who defy the ban and return
to Earth are hunted down and
retired.
Rutger Hauer is dazzling as
the replicant who knows it is
"time to die" but resists, and
the film won many plaudits.
Prior to the 8pm screening,
the theatre bar will be open
and there will be special vinyl playing to get you in the
mood.
Tickets for all Theatr
Gwaun events and films are
available from the website
and box office.

Differing fortunes
ALBUM REVIEWS:
By Tom Sparkes
Aside from being a month
of political uncertainty, May
2015, is also one of musical calamity. Two eagerly
anticipated albums were
released last week, both of
which have left me frustrated
and both of which will undoubtedly divide fans; from
one artist they will plead for
more, the other they will beg
to stop.

Mumford & Sons

Wilder Mind
Island / Glassnote
Mumford & Sons hail from
the Big Smoke, and cut their
teeth on the rising popularity of the West London folk
scene in 2007. Wilder Mind
is their third studio album,
and one which I have been
desperate to tear the cellophane off for months.
Everything was riding
on this album. Their first
recording, Sigh No More,
shimmered with a rustic
quaintness that was incredibly catchy and likeable
once you managed to accept
the West London lad singing
as though he had lived his
entire life in the American
Midwest. Still, Sigh No
More, was a hugely enjoyable affair. Their second
offering, Babel, lost some
signature charm. The rousing foot-stomping drama
of the first album became
predictable and clich in the
second. Wilder Mind is that
all too difficult third album,
that critical opportunity to
pull back on the stick to get
the nose pointing skyward
once more. Unfortunately
for Mumford & Sons the
ground is still approaching
rapidly.
There was a concerted
effort to reinvent the band
for this album; back in
early April when the bands
Wikipedia page was edited
to read British Rock Band
rather than Alternative
Folk-Rock I began to worry.

Album Review: Wilder Mind, Mumford & Sons

The opening track Tompkins Square Park is pleasant, and rather difficult
to describe any further. I
skipped to the title track
Wilder Minds, only to find
it sounded remarkably like
the first. My worry quickly
became alarm. Had the bass
player, Ted Dwane, been
rendered incapable of playing nothing other than root
notes? And as far as my ears
could tell Marcus Mumford
himself had been replaced
by a drum machine. Theres
something a little David
Gray lurking between the
snare drum rim-shots
and I dont like it. Perhaps
I am getting old because I
feel like I have heard all this
before.
By the time I reached Monster, the sixth track, I knew
I would never make it to the
end of the album. Mumford
& Sons have tried so very
hard to reinvent themselves,
to become something new
and different. It is a shame
they had not decided into
what they were changing
before throwing away the
sound and identity that
earned them their reputation in the first place.
Our new sound will freak
people out. Marcus Mumford said. I think freak
is far too strong a word.
At best I am managing
impassive. I dont really
care about how were seen
right now, because I think
the story of this band will
be a long one. Marcus told
NME, and hes right. For

Album Review: Rose Windows

years people will lament

the month when one of
Britains brightest sparks
of the indie-folk scene
reinvented themselves into
something plain, unimaginative and bland.

Rose Windows
Rose Windows
Sub Pop
The second travesty of
the month is that Rose
Windows split up before
their latest self-titled album
even made it to the shelves.
To make matters worse, it
is an astonishingly good
album.
Chris Cheveyo formed
Rose Windows back in 2011,
when America was gripped
by the strangle hold of
austerity. With fuel prices
climbing and the cost of
living soaring, most of
the new recession musicians were solo operations;
switching expensive studio
production time for laptop
recordings in bedrooms
and essential food and
fuel. Chris, however, had
an artistic goal in mind
and jumped in feet first by
forming this Seattle-based
sextet.
Rose Windows are the
stylistic equivalent of a
patchwork-quilt. They are
influenced by everything
from American folk to
West Saharan guitar rock,
from pentatonic protometal to traditional Persian
music, from the darker cor-

ners of Californias early

psych scene to the hazy
atmospherics of contemporary drone artists.
Their latest, and last,
album is no less lavish and
opulent. It opens with a
track called Bodhi Song,
a reference to Buddhist
enlightenment. A reverbdrenched wild-west guitar
riff ploughs into a swaggering foot-stomper of a
track. Strangely, the lead
vocals on this first song are
not provided by regular
vocalist Rabia Shaheen
Qazi, whose wonderfully
exotic voice fronts the rest
of the album.
The second track Glory
Glory unleashes a lo-fi
fuzz-guitar theme that will
have you yearning for an
outrageously over-powered
convertible and the open
road. Strip Mall Babylon
is a beautifully strippedback song, which melds
together loungey flute licks
and catchy lyrics. The song
grows and distorts into
a grungy guitar-driven
chorus, complete with
searing Hammond organ
and churning lo-fi bass.
There is so much to love
about this album, and so
much to hate in that these
nine incredible tracks are
the last that we will hear
from Rose Windows. If you
are unfortunate enough to
have never heard the band
then please, forget about
political, economic or environmental troubles just for
a moment and listen.

Nineties star Beverley Craven in Narberth

Back on the road again

MUSIC fans will be stepping back to the 90s as
chart topper Beverley Craven comes to the Queens
Hall, Narberth on May 29.
The Brit Award-winning
singer became a household
name in the early 90s after
her 1991 single Promise Me
became a huge hit across
Europe.
Her self-named debut
album became a worldwide
hit, selling more than two

million copies, and there

followed a string of chart
successes including Memories, Holding On, Woman To
Woman and Love Scenes and
making her a household
name.
After a long break from
the limelight, she hit the
road again with a sell-out
tour in 2014, and is returning in 2015 to perform at a
handful of select venues as
she continues to promote

her acclaimed latest album

Change of Heart.
She will also be performing all the hits from her
debut self-titled album
which charted at number
three in the UK, and stayed
in the charts for over a year,
eventually going doubleplatinum.

Folk and

a dash of
Celt lair

INDIE folk band Rusty

Shackle will be playing their
well-crafted and catchy tunes
in Newport Memorial Hall
on May 21.
Drawing influence from
folk, roots and rock, the band
mix it up with a Celtic slant,
creating a sound full of emotion and energy.
Delivering incredible live
performances since early
2010, the six-piece band combine guitars, fiddle, banjo,
bass, mandola, trumpet,
tenor guitar, drums and tight
vocal harmonies.
With a large and loyal fan
base already in place, they
have found themselves to
be seasoned regulars on
the British festival circuit,
with their most prestigious
performances to date at
Glastonbury, Cambridge Folk
Festival and Beautiful Days.
The summer of 2014 also
saw the band cross the Atlantic to America, where they
performed in half a dozen
cities across three different
states.
The band has released two
albums, Wash Away These
Nights and The Bones, and an
EP over the past few years,
with songs from all three
gaining national airplay.
Most notably, the title track
from the album The Bones
achieved airplay on Bob Harris BBC Radio 2 show.
The gig is being promoted
by Narberth-based Span Arts
in a venue first for the arts
organisation.
Tickets are available from
the Span Arts website at

TO ADVERTISE

Entrants to
prepare as
the big day
draws near

ITS that time of the year

again where farmers, horse
breeders, riders, gardeners
and dog owners are preening and preparing their exhibits ready for a busy summer showing season.
With an early start, they
are all busy trying to establish the best condition
exhibit and replace the old
rough winter coats with
shiny new summer ones.
The start of the season is always marked by the largest
Spring agricultural show
here in West Wales with the
St Clears YFC Agricultural
show held at the United
Counties show ground at
Carmarthen on May 23.
The show will feature a
completely new facelift this
year with an improved show

ground layout that has literally been turned through

180 degrees. This will offer
better ring facilities for the
horse exhibitors away from
the general public including
a large collecting ring.
Parking will be easier for
exhibitors and the general
public should enjoy hard
standing parking while
sheep and dog show exhibitors will also enjoy better
facilities for parking and exhibiting. Cattle exhibitors
will remain unaffected.
The show represents a
great day out for all the family with lots to see and do
including the cattle, sheep,
horses, dogs, crafts and horticulture classes. What people often fail to recognise is
that West Wales really has

Consultation on
payment scheme

some of the highest quality standards in the country

with exhibitors excelling in
top shows and events.
It will be interesting to see
what new animals will be
brought out this year and to
see how they perform.
The highlight of the show
will be the vintage tractor
display where the ringside
is always packed with people reminiscing of their
past.
And as for thrills and
spills, well we can rest assured from our enthusiastic
team of locals who will be
staging the local Inter Hunt
relay later in the show day.
Last years inaugural class
proved incredibly popular
with the troops from the local Carmarthen Hunt.

Cattle show is a success

THE Welsh Black Cattle Society held
a successful second show and sale at
Whitland on May 2.
Champion Female was awarded to
Syfni Millie 9th entered by Gareth and
Diane James, Tufton, Clarbeston Road,
a March 2012 born, sired by Caran
Dewin Du, she was unsold through the
ring.
Champion Maiden Heifer went to
MV & GM James, Penybryn, Henllan,
Amgoed, Whitland. She sold to new
entrants to the breed, A Kennedy, Ffos
farm ,Cwmdu, Maesteg, Glamorgan for
1,250gns.
Gareth James also sold the reserve

champion maiden heifer to JL & TWE

Jones, Neuadd, Llanarth, Ceredigion
for 1,120gns.
Ben Reynolds, Park View, Trevaughan,
Whitland sold his April 2014 born heifer for 650gns to A Kennedy. This heifer
was sired by Eirianfa Griff.
Champion bull, and the only bull on
offer, was a young bull from Gareth and
Diane James. This 15 month old was
a substitute to the catalogue but was
unsold. Judges were Mr Gareth Davies
and son Daniel Davies of Maes-y-Castell, Taliaris, Llandeilo. Auctioneers
were JJ Morris,
Whitland.

The show opens its gates

from 8.30am with the start
of the horse show with a
full itinerary of agricultural classes across the show
ground concluding around
5.30pm.
Entry to the show includes
free horticulture and dog
show entry, so get all the
family to submit some entries into the craft show.
For all the news and details check out the show
website at stclearsyfcshow.
co.uk or look it up on Facebook. The person who gives
the page its 1,000th like will
win a free ticket to the show.
For show details contact

the local
calendar

NFU Cymru is inviting its members in Pembrokeshire to a county meeting to discuss the new
proposals for the Welsh Government Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) set out within a consultation
launched at the end of March.
Starting at 7.30pm, on May 21, the meeting will
be held at the Agriculture House, Winch Lane,
Haverfordwest.
Simon Richards, Pembrokeshire NFU Cymru
County Chairman, said, The BPS will affect
every farmer in Wales and this meeting is an opportunity to discuss your concerns and get some
clarity on the Welsh Governments proposals.
During the meeting we will go through the consultation paper with members, talking through
the discussions that have taken place since the
legal challenge and seek members views on the
options that are now being consulted upon.
We know that the future design of the Basic
Payment Scheme is a contentious issue and our
membership will have a range of views on the
best way forward. . I would urge our members to
come along to our county meeting.
The 12-week consultation, which can be found
at gov.wales/consultations will close on June 23.
