buildingontheinstitute'scampusinBoston,Massachusetts.ThenewbuildingwillbecalledtheTataHallandusedfortheinstitute'sexecutive
educationprogrammes.[18]Theamountisthelargestfromaninternationaldonorinthebusinessschool's102yearoldexistence.
OneTataprojectthatbroughttogetherTataGroupcompanies(TCS,TitanIndustriesandTataChemicals)was
developingacompact,inhomewaterpurificationdevice.ItwascalledTataswachwhichmeans"clean"inHindiand
wouldcostlessthan1000rupees(US$21).TheideaofTataswachwasthoughtoffromthe2004tsunamiintheIndian
Ocean,whichleftthousandsofpeoplewithoutcleandrinkingwater.Thisdevicehasfiltersthatlastaboutayearlongfor
afamilyoffive.Itisalowcostproductavailableforpeoplewhohavenoaccesstosafedrinkingwaterintheir
homes.[19]Theadvantageofthisdeviceisthatitdoesnotrequiretheuseofelectricity.[20]
TCSalsodesignedanddonatedaninnovativesoftwarepackagethatteachesilliterateadultshowtoreadin40hours.

In1912,TataGroupexpandedtheirCEO'sconceptofcommunityphilanthropytobeincludedintheworkplace.They
institutedaneighthourworkday,beforenearlyanyothercompanyintheworld.In1917,theyrecommendedamedical
servicespolicyforTataemployees.Thecompanywouldbeamongthefirstworldwidetoorganisemodernpension
systems,workers'compensation,maternitybenefits,andprofitsharingplans.[19]

TrustscreatedbyTataGroupcontrol65.8%ofcompanyshares,[21]soitcanbesaidthatabout66%oftheprofitsofTata
Groupgotocharity.[22]ThecharitabletrustsofTataGroupfundavarietyofprojects,forexampletheTataSwachandtheTCSproject.Theyfounded
andstillsupportsuchcherishedinstitutionsastheIndianInstituteofScience,TataInstituteofFundamentalResearch,theNationalCentreforthe

PerformingArtsandtheTataMemorialHospital.EachTataGroupcompanychannelsmorethan4percentofitsoperatingincometothetrustsand
everygenerationofTatafamilymembershasleftalargerportionofitsprofittothem.[19]
AftertheMumbaiattacks,SalariesofthenheavilyattackedTajHotelemployeeswerepaiddespitethehotelbeingclosedforreconstruction.About1600
employeeswereprovidedfood,water,sanitationandfirstaidthroughemployeeoutreachcentres.RatanTatapersonallyvisitedfamiliesofallthe
employeesthatwereaffected.Theemployee'srelativeswereflowntoMumbaifromoutsideareasandwereallaccommodatedfor3weeks.Tataalso
coveredcompensationforrailwayemployees,policestaff,andpedestrians.Themarketvendorsandshopownersweregivencareandassistanceafter
theattacks.ApsychiatricinstitutionwasestablishedwiththeTataGroupofSocialSciencetocounselthosewhowereaffectedfromtheattacksand
neededhelp.Tataalsograntedtheeducationof46childrenofthevictimsoftheterroristattacks.[23][24]
In2013,theTatagroup,throughtheTataReliefCommitteeandtheHimmotthanSociety,anassociateorganisationoftheSirRatanTataTrust,hasbeen
workinginclosecollaborationwiththeUttarakhandgovernmenttoproviderelieftotheimpactedlocalcommunitiesinthreedistrictsofthestate.The
reliefactivities,whichincludeprovisionoffoodandhouseholdmaterial,havesofarcoveredover65villagesand3,000families.Inthefirstphaseof
relief,thegroupexpectstoreachover100villages.TheTatagroupalsoplanstoimplementlongtermmeasuresfortheeconomic,ecologicaland
resourcesustainabilityoftheaffectedcommunitiesandareas.Theplan,currentlyunderdevelopment,willbebasedonabaselinesurveyofimpacted
villageswhichisbeingcarriedoutbyteamsfromtheCentreforDisasterManagementattheTataInstituteofSocialSciences(TISS),Mumbai,in
collaborationwithlocalorganisationsandcommunities.[25][26]
Controversiesandcriticisms
TheTatagrouphasalsoattractedseveralcontroversiesandcriticisms,includingthefollowingbelow.
Munnar,Kerala
TheKeralaGovernmenthadfiledanaffidavitinthehighcourtsayingthatTataTeahad'grabbed'forestlandof3,000acres(12km2)atMunnar.The
Tatas,ontheotherhand,saytheypossess58,741.82acres(237.7197km2)ofland,whichtheyareallowedtoretainundertheKannanDevanHill
(ResumptionofLands)Act,1971,andthereisashortageof278.23hectaresinthat.ThethenChiefMinisterofKeralaV.S.Achuthanandan,whovowed
toevictallgovernmentlandinMunnar,formedaspecialsquadfortheMunnarlandtakeovermissionandstartedacquiringbackoftheencroached
governmentproperties.However,laterhehadtoabortthemissionasthereweremanyinfluentiallandgrabbersandfacedoppositionfromhisownparty.

On2January2006,policemenatKalinganagar,Orissa,openedfireatacrowdoftribalvillagers.Thevillagerswereprotestingtheconstructionofa
compoundwallonlandhistoricallyownedbythem,foraTatasteelplant.Someofthecorpseswerereturnedtothefamiliesinamutilatedcondition.
Whenpushedforcomment,TATAofficialssaidtheincidentwasunfortunatebutthatitwouldcontinuewithitsplanstosetuptheplant.[27]
SuppliestoBurma'smilitaryregime
TataMotorsreporteddealstosupplyhardwareandautomobilestoBurma'soppressiveandantidemocraticmilitaryjuntahascomeinforcriticismfrom
humanrightsanddemocracyactivists.InDecember2006,Gen.ThuraShweMann,Myanmar'schiefofgeneralstaffvisitedtheTataMotorsplantin
Pune.[28]In2009,TATAMotorsannouncedthatitwouldpressaheadwithplanstomanufacturetrucksinMyanmar.[29][30]
LandacquisitioninSingur
TheSingurcontroversy[31]inWestBengalledtofurtherquestionsoverTata'ssocialrecord,withprotestsbylocalsandpoliticalparties(thoughthe
involvementofMamataBanerjee'spartyiswidelycriticizedasanactforpoliticalgains)overtheforcedacquisition,evictionandinadequate
compensationtothosefarmersdisplacedfortheTataNanoplant.Astheprotestsgrew,anddespitehavingthesupportoftheCommunistPartyofIndia
(Marxist)stategovernment,TataeventuallypulledtheprojectoutofWestBengal,citingsafetyconcerns.TheSingurcontroversywasoneofthefew
occasionswhenRatanTatawasforcedtopubliclyaddresscriticismsandconcernsonanyenvironmentalorsocialissue.RatanTatasubsequently
embracedNarendraModi,theChiefMinisterofGujarat,whoquicklymadelandavailablefortheNanoproject.[32]

Ontheenvironmentalfront,thePortofDhamaracontroversyhasreceivedsignificantcoverage,bothwithinIndiaandinTata'semergingglobal
markets.[33][34]
TheDhamraport,aventurebetweenTataSteelandLarsen&Toubro,hascomeinforcriticismforitsproximitytotheGahirmathaSanctuaryand
BhitarkanikaNationalPark,fromIndianandinternationalorganisations,includingGreenpeace.GahirmathaBeachisoneoftheworld'slargestmass
nestingsitesfortheOliveRidleyTurtleandBhitarkanikaisadesignatedRamsarsiteandIndia'ssecondlargestmangroveforest.TATAofficialshave
deniedthattheportposesanecologicalthreat,andstatedthatmitigationmeasuresarebeingemployedwiththeadviceoftheIUCN.[35]Ontheother
hand,conservationorganisations,includingGreenpeace,havepointedoutthatnoproperEnvironmentImpactAnalysishasbeendonefortheproject,
whichhasundergonechangesinsizeandspecificationssinceitwasfirstproposedandthattheportcouldinterferewithmassnestingattheGahirmtha
