CR pumps
Introduction
Pump modules
All the made-to-stock CR pump modules can handle the most demanding of liquids and pressures
and be adjustable to virtually any requirement. Of course, the modules can be combined in multiple
ways making it possible for us to provide you with a pump solution that matches your specific
needs. CR pumps come in many flow sizes and various grades of corrosion-resistant stainless
steel and an all-titanium variant. What follows is an overview of some of the most common CR
pump variants offered by Grundfos that we think would fit to a turbine-cooling system. However,
the overview covers only a fragment of the total pump range. Please do not hesitate to contact
Grundfos if your requirements are not covered by the overview.

CR pumps
MAGdrive
Grundfos designed the CRN MAGdrive to be exactly that. Its pump shaft is rotated from the outside
by the forces of magnetism, so the liquid cannot escape its closed circuit. Everything stays put
which is good news for your processes, your working environment and the environment in general.
Rated power up to 22 kW
The advantages of the hermetically sealed magnetic drive are available on CRN pumps with a rated
power up to 22 kW. No matter how powerful a motor you need, you get a pump which combines
high speed and compactness and the benefits of patented technologies you wont find anywhere
else. Naturally, the MAGdrive series has the superior reliability and performance you expect from a
CR solution.
A magnetic coupling is one way to customise your CR pump for demanding industrial applications.
There are many more. The CR range is famed for giving you the greatest possible choice: take your
pick from a wide range of motor types, materials, couplings, surface treatments and much more.
There are over one million possible combinations. So there is sure to be one to suit you.
10
vindmllebrochure.indd 10
9/4/2012 12:32:41 PM
How it works
A magnetic coupling uses the force of magnetism to transmit power from the drive to the shaft. As
the illustration shows, the magnets are located inside completely separate parts only the force of
magnetism connects the two. When the drive moves the magnets marked A, it makes the magnets
marked B turn as well, causing the shaft in the liquid to rotate and create the required pumping
action. In contrast to traditional pumps, the shaft does not penetrate through the two parts. This
means that there are no holes or seals through which the liquid can escape. The result is hermetically
sealed, safe pumping.

Shaft seals
Extreme liquids call for extreme measures. Most pumps are used for watery liquids at temperatures
below 120C and pressures lower than 30 bar. When liquids go beyond these limits, special shaft
seal solutions are required to guarantee reliable operation.

MAGdrive
(sealless)
Description
Photo
MAGdrive (sealless) solution is the preferred solution if you want a hermetic closed pump or go for a completely maintenance free solution in
many years.
MAGdrive pumps are completely leak-free. They use the power of strong
magnets to turn the pump shaft from the outside, so there are no seals
or openings for the liquid to escape through. The result is safe, hermetically closed pumping.

details
Sometimes, looking at the surface is a good thing. Grundfos TP/TPE pumps are
given cataphoresis surface treatments, consisting of Powercron cathodic electrocoating and zinc phosphate coating. Cataphoresis on the inside of the pump
means a longer lasting inside surface that keeps efficiency high.
Compact
perfection
The ratio between the length and width of the shaft in the pump is extremely
important. Large shaft diameters (D) and a short distance from impeller to motor
(L) maximize stability, ensuring lower maintenance costs. Grundfos pumps always
strive for the optimal proportion between the length and width of the shaft (L3/
D4).- Maximal shaft seal lifetime
- Especially well suited for frequency converter operation

Magna3
If you are looking for the best efficiency on the market combined with high intelligence and wide
range, look no further. The MAGNA3 is here.
Reliable innovation
The MAGNA3 is a circulator pump based on the tried and tested MAGNA technology and our industry-leading experience with electronic pumps. The permanent magnet motor, AUTOADAPT function
and integrated frequency converter are still part of the MAGNA package, but we have added some
additional, ground-breaking new technologies. The result is a cutting-edge piece of intelligent technology that retains the unrivalled Grundfos reliability.
Like its predecessor, MAGNA3 is the ideal pump for heating and cooling applications as well as domestic hot water circulation systems. It is designed to handle liquids down to -10C, which makes it suitable for both tough industrial tasks and ground source heat pump systems (GSHP). Furthermore, the
liquid temperature (-10C to +110C) is now independent of the ambient temperature (0C to +40C).
So whether your project requires heating or cooling MAGNA3 is the pump for you.
Grundfos GO
The intuitive handheld pump control, Grundfos GO, offers full remote access to Grundfos online
tools. With the most comprehensive mobile platform on the market Grundfos GO is designed to save
valuable time on pump control, reporting and data collection.

E-Solutions
Less hassle.
Less cost.
Greater peace of mind.
The E is synonymous with energy savings and electronic control and basically the bottom-line
story of all Grundfos E-solutions. As a world market leader of intelligent, high-quality pumps and
pump systems we feel an obligation to keep at the forefront of the technological development,
introducing truly innovative solutions for the benefit of our customers and the environment. This is
exactly what we do with our comprehensive E-pump programme. Radiating quality and innovation
inside out, Grundfos E-pumps with integrated frequency converter are designed with total control,
customer convenience and environmental sustainability in mind. The best thing about an E-solution
from Grundfos is maybe that it can be set up from Grundfos before delivery. Meaning that you get a
product that is configured, making commissioning really fast and easy. It is more or less a plug and
pump solution.
The ability to control pump speed according to current demand is the single most important factor in
reducing a pumps life cycle costs and energy consumption, because around 85% of the total cost of
owning a pump during its life is attributed to power consumption. With a Grundfos E-pump, energy
consumption can be reduced drastically in some application by up to 50%.
FACTS ABOUT E-SOLUTIONS

If you want reliability and optimum performance in your cooling system, then parallel
pumps could be the solution. Because no
matter the duty point we will be able to
switch pumps in and out depending on the
need. Booster sets from Grundfos are available for any type of pump.
An option if you have two pumps connected in parallel running at 75%. Then
you will able to do all the cooling with only
one pump when the wind is not so strong.
If you are on full load with the turbine and
one pump fails, you will be able to produce
some energy until you can repair.

When you make a offshore wind farm it is necessary to protect the fish in the water against the noise when hammering the turbine pile into the seabed. This is done by installing
a cofferdam outside the pile draining off the water in the
space between the two piles. This will reduce the noise to
the sea and when the wind turbine pile is hammered into
the seabed the cofferdam is lifted away and it is ready to be
used for the next pile.

SP systems
High quality quickly becomes apparent when the job gets difficult.
It usually does. The SP pump resists sand and other abrasives; it
keeps operating when others give up. You can even choose extra
high-grade stainless steel for very severe conditions. What is more,
a range of protection features prevent damage if things get too
tough even for the SP. It is no wonder that you find SP solutions
in the toughest environments e.g. mines and offshore industries
worldwide.

The future
We are ready
Parallel Pumps
Where the future will take us regarding cooling in wind turbines we do not know. But with the
increase in size of the turbines there is no doubt that the need for cooling will also increase. And the
reliability of the systems will become bigger and bigger because it will cost more and more if the
turbine stops. These things are pointing more and more in the direction of double pump solutions
running in duty/standby or duty/assist. Especially the duty/assist function is interesting, because it
could very often be relevant to size maybe two 75% pumps in parallel or three 50% pumps in parallel,
all depending on your control strategy, your operation pattern and so on. Because how often does
your turbine actually run full load? An example of a booster set could be as shown above.
Other solutions that could be relevant in the future, could be sea water cooling of offshore turbines
and maybe also compressor technology with a cooling refrigerant. In both instances Grundfos has the
know-how, experience and products that could help. Some of the advantages of these two systems
could be:
Seawater cooling:
Compressor technology.
Space saving because you can make the heat exchanger around 50% smaller with a refrigerant
compared to air.
Always enough cooling capacity no matter the size of turbine.
We design and build systems ranging from simple pump-driver systems on a base frame to highly
engineered and fully enclosed, packaged systems. We are proud to have the widest range of fire
pump approvals and listings worldwide, and our expertise enables us to engineer, produce, stock,
distribute and service our products all over the world. There are three main reasons for choosing fire
pumps that are approved and certified by accredited third party authorities. Firstly, based on the massive experience embodied in leading fire protection, regulations and codes, approved systems reduce the
risk of harm to life and damage to property in the case of fire. Secondly, approved systems provide maximum reliability and superior quality. Thirdly, using approved and listed fire pumps typically reduces insurance rates significantly. When third party approval is not required for a fire pump installation, Grundfos
can supply non-listed fire systems that comply with specific fire standards.
