Overview
2.1
Function Introduction
In a UMTS network, when the service data sent from one end to the other (TE to TE), it
may traverse different types of bearer networks. As shown in Figure 1, we may classify
End-to-End Service into TE/MT Local Bearer Service, UMTS Bearer Service, and
External Bearer Service.

Bearer Service
UMTS Bearer Service can be subdivided into Radio Access Bearer Service and CN
Bearer Service. One by one, the following describes all the radio access bearer services
supported by ZTE.
2.1.1
2.1.2
If the fixed network user rate is 56 Kbps, the Guaranteed Bit Rate (GBR) of the
corresponding RAB will be set as 64 Kbps by the CN.
When CS RAB is used to bear CS multimedia call services, the following services will be
included:
As defined by the 3GPP, CS multimedia call services conform to the H.324M subset.
RAB radio parameters of CS data conversation services follow the definition in the
3GPP TS 34.108.
2.1.3
2.1.4
as 14.4Mbps. For HSDPA function, refer to the ZTE UMTS HSDPA Introduction Feature
Description. For HSUPA function, refer to the ZTE UMTS HSUPA Introduction Feature
Description.
Once RAB is established, the CN will allocate a corresponding MBR. When a small
amount of data is transmitted, the system will automatically select a smaller data
transmission format for the sake of low-rate transmission.
In order to support an IMS, Signaling RAB will be introduced to support the Session
Initiated Protocol (SIP). Signaling RAB is interactive RAB. For details, refer to the ZTE
VoIP Bearers Feature Description.
RAB radio parameters of PS interactive/background data services follow the definition in
the 3GPP TS 34.108.

Technical Description
This part details the typical flow of establishment and release of service RAB.
3.1
3.1.1
CELL_DCH to CELL_DCH
Figure 2
When UE is in CELL_DCH status, RNC receives RAB establishment request from CN.
According to the channel allocation algorithm policy, UE may maintain its CELL_DCH
status after RAB establishment. For the channel allocation algorithm policy, refer to the
ZTE UMTS DRBC Algorithm Feature Description V2.5 CHS. Figure 2 shows the basic
RAB establishment flow of CELL_DCH to CELL_DCH. The corresponding procedures
are as follows:
1
CN initiates establishment of the radio access bearer with RANAP message Radio
Access Bearer Assignment Request. According to the MaxBitRate, Direction,
Domain, and TrafficClass in the RAB parameters assigned by CN, SRNC matches it
to a corresponding service subclass Sub-Service and allocates network side
resources.
SRNC requests its Node B to prepare establishment of DCH or HSPA Flow to carry
the radio access bearer (Radio Link Reconfiguration Prepare).
Node B allocates resources and notifies SRNC that the preparation is ready (Radio
Link Reconfiguration Ready).
NBAP message Radio Link Reconfiguration Commit is sent from SRNC to Node B.
3.1.2
SRNC sends RANAP message Radio Access Bearer Assignment Response to CN.
CELL_FACH to CELL_DCH
Figure 3
When UE is in CELL_FACH status, RNC receives RAB establishment request from CN.
According to the channel allocation algorithm policy, UE may migrate to CELL_DCH
status after RAB establishment. For the channel allocation algorithm policy, refer to the
ZTE UMTS DRBC Algorithm Feature Description V2.5 CHS. Figure 3 shows the basic
RAB establishment flow of CELL_FACH to CELL_DCH. The corresponding procedures
are as follows:
1
CN initiates establishment of the radio access bearer with RANAP Radio Access
Bearer Assignment Request message. According to the MaxBitRate, Direction,
Domain, and TrafficClass in the RAB parameters assigned by CN, SRNC matches it
to a corresponding service subclass Sub-Service and allocates network side
resources.
SRNC requests its Node B to establish of a new DCH or HSPA flow sending the
Radio Link Setup Request message.
Node B allocates resources and notifies SRNC that the setup is sending the Radio
Link Setup Response.
Node B achieves uplink sync and notifies SRNC with NBAP message Radio Link
Restore Indication.
SRNC sends RANAP message Radio Access Bearer Assignment Response to CN.

When UE is in CELL_FACH status, RNC receives RAB establishment request from CN.
According to the channel allocation algorithm policy, UE may maintain its CELL_FACH
status after RAB establishment. For the channel allocation algorithm policy, refer to the
ZTE UMTS DRBC Algorithm Feature Description V2.5 CHS.Figure 4 shows the basic
RAB establishment flow of CELL_FACH to CELL_FACH. The corresponding procedures
are as follows:
1
CN initiates establishment of the radio access bearer with RANAP Radio Access
Bearer Assignment Request message. According to the MaxBitRate, Direction,

SRNC sends RANAP message Radio Access Bearer Assignment Response to CN.
3.2
Service Release
3.2.1
Figure 5
When UE is in CELL_DCH status, RNC receives IU release request from CN. In this
case, RRC connection can be directly released and all service RABs of UE are released.
Figure 5 shows the basic RRC connection release flow in CELL_DCH status. The
corresponding procedures are as follows:
1
The SRNC initiates the release of the link by sending the Radio Link Deletion to the
Node B (SRNC).
The Node B (SRNC) confirms the release of the link by sending the Radio Link
Deletion Response to the SRNC.
3.2.2
Figure 6
When UE is in CELL_FACH status, RNC receives IU release request from CN. In this
case, RRC connection can be directly released and all service RABs of UE are released.
Figure 6 shows the basic RRC connection release flow in CELL_FACH status. The
corresponding procedures are as follows:
3.2.3

Figure 7
UE has established service and is in CELL_DCH status. It receives RAB release request
from CN at this time. After RAB release, UE will maintain its CELL_DCH status. Figure 7
shows the basic RAB release flow in CELL_DCH status. The corresponding procedures
are as follows:
3.2.4
CN initiates release of the radio access bearer with RANAP message Radio Access
Bearer Assignment Request.
SRNC requests its Node B to prepare release of DCH or HSPA Flow carrying the
radio access bearer (Radio Link Reconfiguration Prepare).
Node B notifies SRNC that release preparation is ready (Radio Link Reconfiguration
Ready).
NBAP message Radio Link Reconfiguration Commit is sent from SRNC to Node B.
SRNC acknowledges the release of radio access bearer (Radio Access Bearer
Assignment Response).
Figure 8
