Mothers Of The Faithful ( Ummahat-ul Mominin ) OR The Wives Of The
Prophet S.A.W.W
Descendants Of The Prophet S.A.W.W
Wives of Muhammad S.A.W.W are popularly known as "Ummahat-ulMomineen". It means that They R.A are the Noble Mothers of Muslim
Ummah. Every Muslim likes to know (and he must know) about the
members of the family of the Prophet S.A.W.W. A very brief account of
their lives is , therefore, given in the following pages. They (R.A) are part
of our Iman and minor to minor misbehavior in their status may cause a
person to suffer the words of Kafir. They (R.A) are the mothers of the
believers. They were promised double reward for their good deeds and
double punishment for their sins.
was the daughter of Khuwalid bin Asad & Fatima bint Zaidah. She came
from a very noble and wealthy Quraish family.Her father was a successful
businessman and had left her a great fortune. She was twice married and
widowed. She had three children from her previous husbands, Harith , Hind
and Hinda. She used to send her merchandise to other countries for
trading.Muhammad S.A.W.W was recommended to her for his honesty and
trustworthiness. He took her merchandise to Syria and brought back great
profit. Maisara, her slave, who accompanied him in this trip spoke highly of
him. She was so impressed that she proposed marriage to him. Prophet
S.A.W.W after consulting his uncle, Abu Talib, accepted it. At the time of the
marriage, Hazrat Khadija was forty years old while Muhammad S.A.W.W was
twenty-five.
The marriage was successful, they had six children , four daughters and two
sons; both the sons, died in infancy. The elder son was Qasim and the
younger one was Abdullah. The daughters were Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm
Kulthoom & Fatimah (R.A).
Hazrat Khadija R.A was a very devoted & loving wife. She stood by him at
the time of hardship and trial. She was the first person to accept Islam, she
was the only wife of Muhammad S.A.W.W who suffered the persecution of
the early days of Islam and suffered the most at the time of boycott. She
died in the 10th year of Prophethood. This year was decleared as the Year of
Grief in Islamic history.

was the daughter of Zama and the second wife of the Prophet S.A.W.W. She
was earlier married to Sakran bin Amr and migrated to Abyssinia along with
her husband. She came back from Abyssinia about the time when Hazrat
Khadija R.A died. Some days later Sakran also died. Sawdah did not have
anyone to look after her. The matter was brought into the notice of
Muhammad S.A.W.W and he dewcided to marry her as he had children and
household matters needed attention. Marriage to Sawdah was an act of
kindness as well as convenience.
She was a humble, pious and a simple lady. She narrated five traditions. She
died in the 22nd Year of Hijrat towards the end of Khilafat of Hazrat Umar.
She was buried in Jannat-ul-Baqi.

was the daughter of Hazrat Abu Bakr, the most intimate companion of the
Holy Prophet S.A.W.W and the first Khalifa of Islam. She was also known by
the titles of Humaira & Umm-e-Abdullah. Aisha was married to Prophet
S.A.W.W at the age of 6.
The verses of Tayammum were revealed when the muslims were delayed on
her account in desert. Aisha R.A had lost her necklace during a journey,
Prophet S.A.W.W stopped to look for it. There was no water nearby and the
Companions had to pray without Wadu, when they mentioned it to Prophet
S.A.W.W the verses of Tayammum were revealed ordering the Muslim to
perform Tayammum in case water was not available.
Aisha R.A was the most beloved wife of the Prophet S.A.W.W. During his final
illness, he used to stay in her apartment after seeking permission from his
other wives. Hazrat Umar had fixed an annual allowance of then thousand
dirhams for each wife of Prophet S.A.W.W; but in the case of Hazrat Aisha
R.A, the amount was twelve thousand dirhams. This was so, because she
was very close to Prophet S.A.W.W.
She was an eloquent lady of great intelligent and excellent memory. She had
narrated 2,210 traditions. Many of these concerned with intimate aspects of
personal behavior. Eminent companions used to come to her for guidance in
religious matters. Aisha R.A was the most scholary person of her time in
Quran, fundamentals of religion, fiqh, poetry, medicine, Arabian history and
genealogy and discrimination between lawful and unlawful things.
She was a very pious and God fearing lady. Apart from the five obligatory
prayers, se would offer extra prayers as well. She fasted very often and was
particular about pilgrimage. She would often purchse slaves in order to free
them.
She died at the age of sixty-six, in the year 57 A.H, and was buried in Janatul-Baqi.
IV
Hafsa R.A was the daughter of Umar R.a, the second Khilifa of Islam. She
was born five years before the Prophethood and was married to Khunis who
died in the battle of Badr. Prophet S.A.W.W married her to consolidate his
relationship with Umar R.A. At the time of Usman R.A, she was asked to give
the Quran so that more copies could be made.
Hafsa R.A was a learned lady. Her knowledge was next to Aisha R.A. She
narrated 60 traditions. Hafsa R.A and Aisha R.A were great friends. Hafsa
R.A spent her time in prayers and fasting.
She died in the year 45 A.H at the age of 63 and was buried in Jannat-ulBaqi.
Was the daughter of Khuzaimah bin Abdullah. She was first married to
Abdullah bin Jahsh who was martyred in the battle of Uhad. As a widow, she
led a life of poverty.
Considering the services rendered by her late husband, Prophet S.A.W.W
proposed to her. Zainab R.A accepted this offer and they married in the
month of Ramadan, 3 A.H.
Zainab R.A was a very kind lady, ever ready to help the poors and the needy,
even at the cost of her own needs. No poor ever returned empty handed
from her house. For this reason, she was called Umm-ul-Masakin,
the mother of the poor. She was courteous and well mannered and in
benevolence and generosity, she had no parallel.
She died within the three months of her marriage with Prophet S.A.W.W and
was buried in Jannat-ul-Baqi.
VI
Her real name was Hind. She was the daughter of Abu Umayyah. She
belonged from the Makhzum Tribe. She was married to Abdullah ibn Abdul
Assad, known as Abu Salamah while she was known as Umm-e-Salamah
because of their son Salamah. Both husband and wife were among the first
persons to accept Islam.
Her husband, Abu Salamah, was wounded in the Battle of Uhad and then he
died after a long illness. She did not have anyone to look after her. Prophet
S.A.W.W proposed her and they were married in the year 4 A.H. She was by
the side of Prophet S.A.W.W in most of the battles. She narrated incidents
how the Prophet S.A.W.W looked after the comforts of his female
companions. The Prophet S.A.W.W consulated in some matters.
At the time of Treaty Of Hudaibiya, the Muslims were greatly disappointed
and were reluctant to shave their heads and offer sacrifice. Umm-e-Salamah
R.A suggested the Prophet S.A.W.W to offer sacrifice and shave his head and
the Muslims followed his examples.
Among the wives of the Holy Prophet S.A.W.W, Umm-e-Salamah was second
only to Hazrat Aisha R.A in learning. She was very modest and generous.
She used to lead a pious and simple life. She had intense love for the Holy
Prophet S.A.W.W and was extremely devoted to him. Umm-e-Salamah was
an impressive reader of the Holy Quran and her style of recitation was
identical with that f Holy Prophet S.A.W.W.
She outlived all the wives of the Holy Prophet S.A.W.W. She died in the year
63 A.H. She died at the age of eighty-four. Hazrat Abu Hurrairah led the
funeral prayers and she was buried in Jannat-ul-Baqi.

She was daughter of Prophets S.A.W.W aunt, Umaima bint Abdul Muttalib
and therefore one of the first cousins of the Prophet S.A.W.W. She was also
one of the early converts to Islam. Her real name was Barra, but Prophet
S.A.W.W changed it when she embraced Islam.
In 3 A.H she was married to Zaid bin Haris, the freed slave of the Prophet
S.A.W.W, and also his adopted son. She and her brother were hesitated
towards the match but bowed before the wishes of the Holy Prophet
S.A.W.W. The marriage proved to be a failure and Zaid divorced Zainab.
After the period of waiting was over, the Prophet S.A.W.W sent her a
proposal of marriage. Zainab replied that she could not give any reply

Her real name was Ramlah. She was the daughter of Abu Sufyan. She was
first married to Ubaidullah bin Jahsh. She embraced Islam along with her
husband. Both of them migrated to Abyssinia where she gave birth to a
daughter named Habibah, and so she came to be known as Umm-e-Habibah.
In Abyssinia,when her husband converted to Christianity, Umm-e-Habibah
left her. At the end of the Iddat, Prophet S.A.W.W sent her a proposal of
marriage. According to Sahih Muslim, the people of Madinah, requested the
Prophet S.A.W.W to marry her in order to resettle her. This was also to save
her from falling into the hands of her father, Abu Sufyan, who was at that
time an enemy of Islam. Hazrat Umm-e-Habibah was very pleased to receive
this proposal and they were married in the 6th or the 7th year of Hijrat.
Hazrat Umm-e-Habibah R.A was a staunch believer in the tents of Islam.
She strictly followed the injunctions laid down by the Holy Prophet S.A.W.W
and urged others to follow him as well. She looked after the widows and the
orphans. She was a devoted and loving wife of the Prophet S.A.W.W. She is
the narrator of sixty-five traditions.
She died at the age of seventy-three in 44 A.H., during the reign of her
brother Muaiwiya. She was buried in Jannat-ul-Baqi.
Her real name was Zainab. She was born in Madinah and belonged to the
Jewish tribe of Banu Nazir. She was married to Salam bin Mahakam but he
divorced her. Then she was married to Kinanah. When Khyber fell into the
hands of the Muslims in the 6th year of Hijrat, her husband was killed and
she became a captive. She appealed to the Prophet S.A.W.W who married
her and she was renamed Safiyah R.A.
Other wives of Prophet S.A.W.W were jealous of her because of her beauty,
however she got along very well with Fatima R.A., the Prophets daughter.
She was pious and a generous lady who gave most of her ornaments to the
poor. She was fond of hearing the Prophet S.A.W.W preach and attended his
sermons. She died in 50th A.H., during the reign of Muawiyah, and was
buried in Janat-ul-Baqi.

Her real name was Bara. She was sister-in-law of Abbas , the Prophets
uncle. Her first husband was Masud bin Amr. After her divorced her, she
married Abu Raham, who soon died. Prophet S.A.W.W married her at the
request of his uncle Abbas. They were married in 7th A.H.
She was a pious, generous and a humble lady. She liberated many slaves.
She narrated seventy-six traditions.
She died in 51 A.H. and was buried in Jannat-ul-Baqi.

The only wives of the Holy Prophet S.A.W.W who bore his children were
Hazrat Khadija and Maria Qibtia. He had two sons and four daughters from
his first wife, Hazrat Khadija. The sons died in infancy. The daughters were
Zainab, Ruqayyah, Kulthoom and Fatimah R.A. All the daughters died during
his life time except Fatimah R.A.
DAUGHTERS:
Hazrat Zainab R.A:
She was married to AbulAl Aas, the son of Khadijas R.A sister. In the battle
of Badr, AbulAl Aas fought on the side of the infidels and was brought as a
captive before the Prophet S.A.W.W. for his release and ransom, Zainab R.A
sent a necklace, which has been given to her by her mother. When the
Prophet S.A.W.W saw the necklace, he recognized it and his eyes were filled
with tears. He returned the necklace and freed AbulAl Aas. Later AbulAl Aas
came to Madinah and accepted Islam.
Zainab R.A died in the 8 A.H., as a result of sword wound inflicted by an
enemy at the time she migrated to Madinah.

SONS:
Qasim:
was the eldest son of the Prophet S.A.W.w who was born in Makkah, eleven
years before the conferment of Prophethood. The Holy Prophet S.A.W.W
loved him very much and liked to be called Abul Qasim. He live for two years
only.
Tahir:
He was also known as Abdullah. He was the second son of Prophet S.A.W.W.
he was also born in Makkah after the conferment of Prophet and he lived for
less than two years.
Ibrahim:
He was the third son of Prophet S.A.W.W. He was born in Madinah in the 8 th
year of Hijrat to Maria Qibtia R.A. The child was given to foster parents who
lived in the neighborhood of Madinah. The Prophet S.A.W.W often used to
visit him. Ibrahim died while still in infancy.
