Nalanda Polytech, Circuit design contest

02-feb-2010

Participant is allowed to refer the data sheets of all the circuit components required.
Time duration: 75min.
The scientific calculators are allowed.
Answer all the questions.
Each question of Part A carries 10marks and Part B carries 20 marks.

Part A: Circuit Design

1. Mr. Wang came to meet his old friend, Prof. Ming, with a problem that he had a
device which will work satisfactorily with the triangular waveform. Unfortunately Mr.
Wang had no triangular waveform generator, but had a square wave generator. With
the generator available, Prof has to make the device work. Assist the Prof to make it
done.

2. Once Dr Mike came to Prof Ming to get a device done, which gives the mental status
of a person. Fortunately , one device to read a human mind is already existing and
gives the output as stated below
a. If a person is happy, the output varies between 0V to 5V.
b. If a person is sad, the output varies between 0V to -5V.

The signal is full of noise and the voltage levels can be affected badly up to 1V.

Since Prof is busy you have to do this work for Dr .Mike, a device which gives an
output of +10V if sad, and an output of -10V if happy.

3. Once Prof. Ming met Dr .Mike and he noticed that the Doctor was in a problem. Dr.
Mike was unable to make out the maximum value of a highly fluctuating ECG signal
on his CRO. But he is sure that the signal was varying between 0 V and +10V.Now,
Prof Promises to find out a solution even though he is not well. So, you have to
design this to help Dr. Mike to determine the maximum value of ECG signal
accurately.

4. Prof. Ming finds that he has to be present in a meeting within five minutes. In
urgency his watch slips from his wrist and breaks .Can you design a system to
indicate five minutes?

5. Jenny and Rhonee are the children of Dr. Mike .Once, he found them arguing that
Analog Electronics and Digital Electronic fields are totally disconnected to each
other after studying the NOT gate. Then the doctor calls his friend, Prof. Ming to end
this argument. Prof tells that they are connected and now, it’s your turn to convince
the children that both the fields are deeply connected.

Part B: System Development.

6. Dr Mike is transferred to a rural health centre; he noticed that there was a great
problem of power supply in the hospital at night. Dr wants to solve this problem
permanently, calls his friend Prof Ming and explains the same. You are sent to solve
this problem.
a. The expectations of Dr Mike are listed below:
i. The system has to source a bulb rated 3V-6V, 20mA-500mA DC.
ii. The intensity of the light should be controllable.
iii. The system should be rechargeable.
iv. It should start automatically as soon as the power fails, also should
put off itself with mains on.
v. A indicator is required to show the charging process.
vi. System should be able to charge as quick as possible.
b. The availabilities with Dr Mike are listed below.
i. AC mains 220V, 5A 50Hz.
ii. Rechargeable battery rated 6V, 4.7Ah. (max charging/discharging
current 1.35A).
