What you need to know about the kitchen sink


If the kitchen is the heart of your home, it would be
easy to make the case that the sink is the heart of your
kitchen. Its where you prepare foods, clean dirty hands
and scrub dishes before the next culinary project. Its
also one of the best features to update when planning a
kitchen remodel, thanks to new technology and designs
aimed at improving how well kitchen sinks perform.
When it comes to style, traditional is the most
popular design choice for families. The contemporary
style, however, is increasing in popularity and comes
in at a close second, according to studies of posts on
Houzz and pins on Pinterest. But when it comes to
picking a new kitchen sink, theres much more to think
about than just the design style. You must consider
top- and under-mount sinks, single bowl, double
bowl and materials as well. Here is some background
information regarding whats available, as well as the
pros and cons for each:

Top-mount - This type of sink is the easiest to


install and replace, especially if you dont intend to

replace the countertops. It does create a ridge where the


sink material meets the counter, however, and this is a
place where water and dirt often collect, making cleaning

Undermount

- For cleaning purposes, undermount sinks are great because you can simply wipe your
cloth right over the counter and into the sink. But if you
need to replace an under-mount sink, it might also require
you to take out the countertops.

Single bowl -

When it comes to washing large


dishes, the single-bowl sink is a good choice. Its also handy
if you need to dump large pots of hot water, because you
have a larger area to hit. You might end up using more
water with the single-bowl sink, though, especially when
washing dishes. It simply takes more water to get it deep
enough in the single bowl.

Double bowl - One sink for washing, one for

drying. One sink for holding dirty dishes and another


for rinsing vegetables. There are myriad reasons why
homeowners love having a double bowl. One drawback
is that the sink is smaller, and that makes it easier to splash
water outside of the sink area.

Drain type -

When it comes to the features of the


sink you traditionally think about, the drain is probably
not top of mind. There are several drain styles available,

Stainless steel -

As the most popular choice


because of its functionality, durability and coloring,
stainless steel has a timeless element to it. It can scratch,
though, and it might have a louder noise value. It also
shows water spots more easily.

Cast iron - A throw-back to the original sinks, cast

iron sinks with an enamel finish are still quite popular


today. The finish is very strong, but tiny chips and
pinholes that can evolve over time can cause the iron sink
to rust. Cast iron sinks also tend to cost more.

Granite or quartz composite -

These
sinks feature a combination of rock with resin, and they
create a beautiful and colorful look in any kitchen. The
composite materials are very durable and require little
maintenance. They do tend to cost more money, and
the coloring of your sink could limit your options when
decorating the rest of the room.

The stack of shoes that pile up by the front door, the linen
closet that youre afraid to open, the junk drawer that may
well hide the mysteries of the universe - we all have one or
two spots in our home that cry out for organization and
tidying. Spring cleaning season is approaching, and with a
plan of attack you can take this opportunity to clear away
clutter, organize underutilized spaces and generally improve
the overall usability of your home.
Procter & Gamble and The Home Depot have teamed up
with seven DIY bloggers to offer 14 room-by-room tips for
getting organized this spring:

Cutting kitchen chaos

* Nearly everyone has one drawer in their kitchen that


becomes the catch-all spot. Empty yours, wipe down
the inside, and insert a silverware tray to help organize
pens, batteries, buttons, random screws and other items
that find their way into the drawer. You can find drawer
inserts and many other organizational tools at The Home
Depot near you.
* Every family needs a central spot for sharing information.
But if a cork board, white board or chalkboard isnt your
idea of wall decor, try hiding them away on the inside of
a kitchen cabinet. Mount a cork panel on the inside of a
cabinet door, or use chalkboard paint to create a hidden
and useful spot for notes, shopping lists, coupons and
reminders.
* You likely sweep the kitchen floor daily, but floors can
also benefit from a good steam cleaning at least once a
week. Steam cleaners like the Swiffer Bissell Steamboost

* Organize the cupboard and pantry by using boxes, jars
and baskets with labels on them. When its time to put an

* Scent is a key concern in bathrooms. Scrubbing the shower,
floors, toilet and sink until they sparkle is a good start, but
sometimes baths need a scent boost. Try placing scented
candles in the bathroom to help neutralize odors and add
a fresh, welcoming aura to the room.

Lighten the load in laundry rooms

* Even small laundry rooms often have unused space above


the washer and dryer where you can install shelving for
storage. Head over to your local home improvement store
for a variety of shelving to store detergents, stain removers
and fabric softeners.
* Add a rolling cart or laundry butler to your laundry room.
Its a great way to add organization and function to the
space, helping keep clothes off the floor - plus theyre
simple to transport.
* Laundry rooms are often overlooked in the decor
department, but a fresh coat of paint can really liven up
a dingy, utilitarian room. Choose a bold and bright color
- the laundry room is about making things clean, so the
room should inspire the vividness you want to achieve in
your clothes.

* Empty your linen closet and refresh all those stale sheets

First impressions mean a lot - especially when it comes

National Home Design Survey from Sherwin-Williams.

felt there was more they could do to improve it.
The good news is that curb appeal can be improved with
minimal investment including a fresh coat of paint, says John
Gidding, famed interior designer and landscape architect.
A fresh coat of paint and minimal landscaping can
go a long way in improving the overall impression,
personality and feel of your home, Gidding says. Home
improvements are beneficial if you are planning to sell, but
they also significantly impact how you feel while living in
your home. This is especially true for curb appeal, and this
time of year is perfect for sprucing up your space.
Here are some ways to enhance your homes appeal from
the outside, and improve the way you feel on the inside
while living there.
Perk it up with paint. Painting is one of the most costeffective and impactful ways to improve curb appeal. As
you select exterior colors, choose a bright, contrasting color
for the front door to give it instant pop. Other key areas
to consider repainting include garage doors, shutters and
window trim.

Go for some greenery. Landscaping enhancements were


among the top five projects for homeowners in the survey.
Give your lawn a little love by turning the front yard into
a well-manicured welcome mat. Get rid of weeds. Put
fresh mulch around the homes foundation, and prune the
outgrowth on bushes. For a quick way to freshen your
doorstep, paint flowerpots in a bright color and add colorful
flowers.
Put your home in a new light - literally. Install updated
lighting by the front door, porch and garage. Use solarpowered landscape lights to create a pathway from the street
to your door, or to define a gorgeous garden.
Add small details for big impact. Once you paint your
front door, upgrade the door handles with beautiful new

and mailbox in a color to coordinate with your homes
exterior.
Set the scene. Create an eye-catching setting that adds

lantern that flickers in the evening. You can also bring new

With the snow melted and the ground thawed, many
eager homeowners and landscape professionals across the
country will roll up their sleeves and reach for their garden
shovels to start projects that require digging this spring.
During the transition into digging season, Common
Ground Alliance (CGA), the association dedicated to
protecting underground utilities and the people who dig
near them, reminds homeowners and professional diggers
that calling 811 is the first step toward protecting you and
your community from the risk of unintentionally damaging
an underground line.
Every digging project, no matter how large or small,
warrants a free call to 811. Installing a mailbox or fence,
building a deck and landscaping are all examples of digging

projects that should only begin a few days after making a


call to 811. Calling this number connects you to your local
one-call utility notification center.
Nearly half of American homeowners say they do not
plan to make a free call to 811 before digging, according to
data collected by CGA in late February. Extrapolated to the
full population of U.S. homeowners, approximately 38.6
million people will dig this year without first calling 811.
A utility line is damaged every six minutes in America
because someone decided to dig without making a call to

811 to learn the approximate location of buried utilities in


their area. Unintentionally striking one of these lines can
result in inconvenient outages for entire neighborhoods,
harm to yourself or your neighbors and repair costs.
As a result, CGA offers the following tips to make sure
you complete your project safely and without any utility
service interruptions, so you dont become a statistic.

Heres how the 811


process works:

1. One free, simple phone call to 811 makes it easy for


your local one-call center to notify all appropriate utility
companies of your intent to dig. Call a few days prior to
digging to ensure enough time
for the approximate location of
utility lines to be marked with
flags or paint.
2. When you call 811, a
representative from your local
one-call center will ask for the
location and description of your
digging project.
3. Your local one-call center will
notify affected utility companies,
which will then send professional
locators to the proposed dig site
to mark the approximate location
of your lines.
4. Only once all lines have been
accurately marked, roll up those
sleeves and carefully dig around
the marked areas.
There are nearly 20 million
miles of underground utility lines
in the United States that your
family depends on for everyday
needs including electric, gas, water and sewer, cable TV,
high-speed Internet and landline telephone, which equals
more than a football fields length of utilities for every person
in the United States. With that much critical infrastructure
underground, its important to know whats below and call
811 before digging.
