1 Introduction
1.1 Scope
This document describes the application scenarios and network structure for remote upgrade of the BSC
and BTS software in GBSS9.0.

1.2 Intended Audience

This document is intended for:

Personnel who need to understand Remote Upgrade of the BSC&BTS Software

Personnel who work with Huawei products

2 Overview of Remote Upgrade of the BSC&BTS

Software
Remote upgrade of BSC software is a process in which the BSC software is remotely upgraded through
the M2000. Multiple BSCs can be upgraded in batches. Remote upgrade of BTS software is a process in
which the BTS software is remotely upgraded through the M2000. Multiple BTSs can be upgraded at a
time.
Remote software upgrade can be implemented through an automatic upgrade procedure on the GUI.
This facilitates the upgrade and improves the reliability of upgrade. Remote software upgrade not only
avoids inconvenient local maintenance, for example, in a remote area, but also shortens the time of
service disruption due to system upgrade by upgrading multiple network elements (NEs) at a time.
Remote software upgrade can be performed automatically and multiple NEs can be upgraded at a time.
Thus, the working efficiency of maintenance personnel is improved, and the upgrade cost is reduced.

3.1 Typical Network Structure for Remote Software Upgrade
Figure 3-1 shows a typical network structure for remote upgrade of the BSC and BTS software in
GBSS9.0.

3.2 Remote Upgrade of BSC Software

Huawei BSS supports remote upgrade of the host software and OMU software of the BSC through the
M2000.

3.2.1 Procedure for Remote Upgrade of BSC Software

Figure 3-2 shows the procedure for remote upgrade of BSC software.

This procedure is described as follows:

Prepare for the upgrade.

The preparation involves applying for a new license, collecting the information about the site, performing
the NE health check, and preparing files for the upgrade.
z

Start the upgrade client through the M2000.

Download the upgrade package from the M2000 to the OMU.

z

Configure the basic information about the upgrade.

The basic information includes the upgrade type, OMU IP address, and administrator password for the
OMU.
z

Perform pre-upgrade.

The pre-upgrade involves backing up data, checking the environment information, and pre-upgrading
the OMU software and data.
z

Perform upgrade.

The upgrade involves upgrading the OMU version and restarting the host.
z

Verify whether the upgrade is successful.

The verification involves checking the network health and verifying services. The purpose of network
health check is to check the resource usage and state of NEs. The purpose of service verification is to
verify whether services are processed properly after the upgrade.
z

Perform version rollback.

If the version or patch is found faulty after the version upgrade or patch installation, version rollback must
be performed.

3.2.2 Characteristics and Specifications of Remote Upgrade of BSC

Software
The remote upgrade of the BSC software can be the combination of version upgrade and patch
installation.
A maximum of 10 BSCs can be upgraded remotely at a time.

3.3 Remote Upgrade of BTS Software

The BTS software supports one-key upgrade and automatic upgrade.
z

In a one-key upgrade, maintenance personnel load and activate the BTS software through the M2000.

In an automatic upgrade, the BSC automatically upgrades the BTS software according to the BTS
software version information configured by the maintenance personnel. Automatic upgrade does not
require manual operation.

3.3.1 Procedure for Remote Upgrade of BTS Software

Figure 3-3 shows the procedure for remote upgrade of BTS software.

This procedure is described as follows:

Upload the software.

Upload the BTS software upgrade package to the M2000.

z

Download the software.

Download the BTS software from the M2000 to the BSC OMU.
z

Select the BTS.

Select the BTS to be upgraded.

z

Select the version of BTS.

Select the BTS version to be upgraded to.

z

Load the BTS.

Load the BTS software to the target BTS.

z

Activate the software.

Activate the new software version of the BTS. Then, restart the BTS.

Check whether the upgrade is successful.

After the upgrade, check the NE version, state, and alarms and check whether services are processed
properly after the upgrade.
z

Perform version rollback.

If the version or patch is found faulty after the version upgrade or patch installation, version rollback must
be performed.

3.3.2 Characteristics and Specifications of Remote Upgrade of BTS

Software
The remote upgrade of BTS software has the following characteristics:
z

Efficient software installation and upgrade

Check of software and hardware compatibility, which ensures a successful software installation and
upgrade

Version management, for example, query of the software and hardware version

Automatic data conversion during software upgrade

Improvement of the software download efficiency and expansion of OM channel bandwidth during
software upgrade

Support of software download based on data configuration

Support of the batch download and activation of BTS software

The specifications of remote upgrade of BTS software are as follows:

z

In a one-key upgrade, multiple BTSs under one or more BSCs can be upgraded through the M2000.

A maximum of 500 BTSs can be upgraded simultaneously through the M2000.

If more than 500 BTSs need to be upgraded, the M2000 upgrades these BTSs in batches, with not
more than 500 BTSs in each batch.

A maximum of 100 BTSs under one BSC can be loaded simultaneously through the M2000. If more
than 100 BTSs under one BSC need to be upgraded, the BSC upgrades these BTSs in batches, with
not more than 100 BTSs in each batch.
