Engaged

By Tawny Michels
ZUMBROTA Rose Perra of
Zumbrota was recently notified
that she will be receiving an award
from the American Red Cross for
50 years of service to the Minnesota Bloodmobile.
She got started with the bloodmobile while living in a small town
south of Owatonna called Hope.
She decided to get involved after
going through breast cancer and
needing a blood transfusion herself. As a former RN I already
knew the importance of donating
blood, but it wasnt until I needed
one that I really appreciated the
act of giving blood, Perra said.
She worked in the canteen, a recovery area for people who give
blood to make sure they dont have
any reactions.
She remarked at how much the
bloodmobiles have changed over
the past 50 years, noting specifically the fact that volunteers working in the canteen no longer need
to be RNs, and that while they
always had to show up for their
shift in a nurses uniform, now
they come in casual attire with a
nametag to identify them as Red
Cross volunteers.
Perra and her husband John have
been married for 60 years and they
have five grown children. She grew
up in the western Minnesota town
of Ortonville. Her grandfather
came over in the late 1800s from
Ireland and just kept traveling west
until he found some free land as
part of the Homestead Act.
About fifteen years ago she
joined the Ladies Auxiliary in
Zumbrota because of her husbands
service during World War II. One
of the Ladies Auxiliary activities
involves the bloodmobile and since
she already had experience with
them and had worked at the Zum-

Rose Perra

brota Nursing Home, she was able

to stay involved. She says that
membership in the Auxiliary is
becoming increasingly important
as the WWII and Korean War era
veterans and their wives are getting older. The emphasis is going to lie on Vietnam, Iraq, and
Afghanistan era veterans, their
families, and the grandchildren
from older wars, Perra said. It is
important for the women to support our vets and assist the VFW
in their support.
The Ladies Auxiliary will be
holding a bloodmobile on Tuesday, June 2 from 1-7 p.m. at StaryYerka VFW Post 5727 in Zumbrota. Those interested in donating can call to make an appointment or to ask questions. Call
Bunny at 507-259-4792 or Darla
at 651-307-1257. Rose Perra will
also be working at the bloodmobile for anyone wishing to congratulate and thank her for her 50
years of dedicated service.

ZUMBROTA A record
amount of non-perishable food
donations was collected by Zumbrota Post Office letter carriers
Saturday, May 9. The 3,150 pounds
of food was significantly higher
than previous years according to
David Boraas, local coordinator.
Last years total donation was
approximately 2,300 pounds.
The National Association of
Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, now in its 23rd
year, is the nations largest singleday food drive. The event is held
annually on the second Saturday
in May in 10,000 cities and towns
across the country. Boraas said
Zumbrota letter carriers have
participated consistently throughout the years.
Carriers distributed the blue
donation bags ahead of the collection date. Boraas, who has been
coordinator for at least eight years,
attributes the combination of the
bags and the nice weekend weather
as reasons for the best ever response this year. Zumbrota and
Wanamingo rural carriers and
Zumbrota city carriers collected

the donations on their routes.

Monetary donations were also received on the routes and at the
post office.
After the postal vehicles were
unloaded and the items were taken
from the individual bags and reboxed, items were taken to area
food shelves. This year, 2000
pounds was delivered to the Zumbrota Area Food Shelf and 1150
pounds to the Kenyon Food Shelf.
Maggie Eggerichs, co-director
of the Zumbrota Food Shelf, is
grateful for the efforts of the postal
employees and the donations received. She said, There would
be no food bank without contributions like these. Even though it
has been over a week since we
received the donations, we are still
unboxing the items and will continue to do so to restock the
shelves. Eggerichs also noted the
good variety of items received,
specifically giving the example
of canned tuna. We have been
unable to order tuna from Channel One recently (food shelf supplier in Rochester), but were able
to restock through the letter carrier drive.

Rene Steger receives

Good Neighbor Award
By Tawny Michels
ZUMBROTA WCCO News
Radio 830 awarded its Good Neighbor Award to Zumbrota resident
Rene Steger on May 7. According
to the news station and WCCOs
website, A good neighbor is respectful, trustworthy and volunteers to do good deeds.
Rene was nominated by her
husband of 29 years, Thomas
Steger, who said Her resume of
volunteering is quite long. In fact,
we met through the Jaycees.
He sent the following to WCCO
when he nominated her for the
award:
Rene Steger has donated countless hours over the years as a community volunteer, first in her hometown of Lakefield, then in Warren, and now in Zumbrota. In recent years she has headed up her
churchs outreach to shut-ins, coordinating meal preparation and
delivery monthly in the wintertime. This March she promoted a
food shelf challenge resulting in

thousands of pounds of food being donated to the Zumbrota Area

Food Shelf. Her self-proclaimed
ministry with food also finds her
making deliveries to the Ronald
McDonald House and to the Dorothy Day House in Rochester.
Along with this she works locally
as a Headstart teacher and serves
with the Zumbrota Area Combined
Charities.
When asked why he nominated
his wife Tom said, We are regular listeners of WCCO and always
hear of these recognitions and recently I thought, she is as deserving as any of the others so I wrote
up the synopsis and submitted it.
I was very surprised, Steger
said of being nominated. I was
running some errands during my
break and on my way back to work
I heard my name on the radio.
She said she was very impressed
that her husband thought of nominating her and even coordinated it
with her birthday weekend.
