URC International Scholarships

Nomination for International Masters and Doctoral funding


in 2015
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Forms should be completed electronically
2. Ensure that the candidate meets the eligibility requirements which are that
students:
Not be South African citizens or permanent residents. Students from SADC
and other African countries should be given preference.
Be registered for a full-time Masters or PhD and within the following term:
o Masters within two years from first date of registration for the degree
o Doctoral within three years from first date of registration for the
degree
May not hold any bursaries, awards, assistantships or emoluments
concurrently with the URC international scholarship, which bind him/her to
enter the service of any organisation upon completion of his/her studies. In
addition, the scholarship may not be held concurrently with any other NRF,
university or Government funded scholarship/bursary.
Have an average of at least 60% in the previous degree.
Registering for the first time for the specific level of study.

The scholarship-holder may not hold full-time salaried employment during


the tenure of the scholarship, but he/she will be allowed to undertake a
maximum of twelve hours of teaching, tutorials, assistance or
demonstration duties per week on average during the year of study, and
he/she may be remunerated for his/her services, provided that he/she is
reimbursed at the normal university tariff for services rendered.
All awardees will be required to enter into a signed agreement with the
University of Johannesburg.
3. The nomination form must be completed electronically by the student and
signed by the student and Dean of the Faculty. Forms must be submitted with
attachments to Ms Dudu Mbatha at the RC Nano Building, Postgraduate Centre).
4. Once the award is made, students who are not registered can be
unblocked for registration. Following registration, students must submit a
proof of registration to Ms Mbatha. The allocation of the funding to the
student account will then be coordinated. The full award will be paid
directly into the student account thereby crediting any debits such as
tuition. Students must complete an Application for Refund form (available
at Student Finances or the Cashiers) in order to have the available balance
transferred to their bank accounts. The scholarship is available in two
portions, one per semester. Students are therefore only allowed to refund
the bursary amount available after the award has credited any debits in
the student account. A renewal process will be coordinated by the PGC
after the first year of funding.

I have been studying B.Sc. Chemical Engineering and graduated last
December. My university life is a complete mixture of various
experiences. The professional Experiences include the internships at
DH Fertilizers and Pagel Construction Chemicals. I always tried to be
a complete package for the company hiring me or offering me an
internship. The courses I studied in my university include a complete
blend of interest from engineering economics to the core petroleum
subjects.
I am serving my society by being an active member in so many
different organizations which include international like Rotary Club
and city based like Pakistan Sustainability Network. It helps me to
hone my managerial as well as the leadership skills. It also makes
me to realize the importance of resources.
Currently, I am serving as the President of Pakistan Sustainability
Network and Vice President of Rotaract Club of Lahore (Rotary
International).I have experimented myself in education sector as
well by developing and successfully running my own education
system called Excellent Education System.Apart from these, I
have co founded two different NGOs explicitly Moral Cause and
Pahla Qadam(A project of R.Y.K.P.S).I have been to so many different

Model United Nation conferences which just not only hone your
speaking ability but it also boost the general knowledge about the
countries around the globe. I am the only student having three
conference papers (Research Papers) at bachelors level.
I believe that all these credentials make me a suitable candidate for
this program as it will be an add-on in the pursuit of my career.

12. Details of Research


Research Rationale and Motivation

My parents have to move from village to city, Nanakana Sahib; my village


is renowned for its crime rate. Drug trafficking, rape and murder cases are
considered normal things. Illiteracy rate is on its peak. Unemployment and
poverty is leading to crimes.
My parents were fretful about my education as it wasnt a safe
environment. So, they had to leave everything back and come to Lahore
for the sake of offsprings future. They decided to give me the best
education in the town. My dad was jobless at that time so my mother had
to sell her gold earrings to pay my admission fees.
Environment of school was hostile. Students were punished like prisoners,
tightening them with a wall or lying down on ground and beating was a
regular practice. The spoiled brats of rich families used to intimidate as I
couldnt afford to have the lavish life style they were having. I felt like
deprived and I used to cry in bathroom. All this affected my personality
and grooming. My parents knew everything but they had no other choice
and school was comparatively safe place than my village. I fought with all
the situations and maintained my bright academic career. I got my
ordinary level and Advanced level from the college. This time it was my
mothers gold bangles, they did the trick because my dads pay wasnt
enough.
The nightmare ended with a glowing morning. I got a reward for all
hardships. I was capable enough and scored well in entrance exam that I
was honored to be accepted by a very prestigious institute of Pakistan. The
institute is well known around the globe i.e. University of the Punjab (PU),
Lahore. PU is the oldest, top ranked university of Pakistan. Cream of
country (brilliant students) is accumulated here as it is the highest merit
university in Pakistan.
The adversity of the time and situation were always against my way. It was
my believe to take them as a challenge and reach the acme of my career.
It was my will to take them as a hurdle and stop heading towards my
destination or just consider them the golds kiln where the impure ore gets

the purest form. These entire situations helped me to groom myself,


providing a firm and sound knowledge of tackling peculiarity.
It was the time to prove myself by settling in it and better survive in this.
My social activities along with my research papers helped me a lot to cope
up the gap and get the self confidence back in my powers. I felt like being
at my acme when Vice Chancellor of my university met me on his visit to
department and called me as he caught a glimpse of mine. He said Son! I
am waiting for your next research paper. Never let finances make you
leave what is exclusive in you.
Furthermore, I want to pursue my further education that is masters and
then PhD in the sector related to management. It is the field I always
wanted to be the part of. The background of engineering field will help me
to analyze and redevelop the more efficient processes. The dependency of
economic cycle on it make it special for me.I believe that i have been
performing well in my field subjects and I realized while my undergraduate
degree courses I am rather passionate about management sector rather
than production. I came up with one research papers related to the
management.
I want to be the next Nobel Prize winner for my services in the field of
management which will be the unique and perpetrating lesson for those
who are considering their proposed degree in management.
