1. Tugasan ini mengandungi SATU (1) soalan sahaja yang disediakan dalam bahasa modul bercetak
kursus ini. / This assignment contains only ONE (1) question that is set in the language of the printed
module for the course.
2. Jawab dalam Bahasa Melayu atau Bahasa Inggeris. / Answer in Malay or English.
3. Muatturunkan templet tugasan versi bahasa yang berkenaan daripada MyVLE untuk penyediaan dan
penyerahan tugasan anda. Tugasan anda hendaklah ditaip dengan menggunakan saiz fon 12 Times New
Roman dan langkau baris 1.5. / Download the language version of the assignment template concerned
from the MyVLE for preparation and submission of your assignment. Your assignment should be typed
using 12 point Times New Roman font and 1.5 line spacing.
4. Tugasan anda hendaklah antara 2500 hingga 3000 patah perkataan tidak termasuk rujukan. Bilangan
perkataan hendaklah ditunjukkan di hujung tugasan anda. Jangan menyalin soalan dan arahan tugasan
dalam jawapan anda. / Your assignment should be between 2500 to 3000 words excluding references.
The number of words should be shown at the end of your assignment. Do not copy the assignment
question and instructions to your answer.

AN ERROR ANALYSIS OF SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT

OF ESL STUDENTS ESSAYS

The assignment consists of TWO parts, as follows:

Part 1 Data Collection
It is recommended that you include between ten to twenty students in this task. Assign a 300-400
word essay writing task to your students on any topic that is relevant to your lesson and sufficiently
easy for them. Some examples would be The habits of OUM students, Travelling in Malaysia
or Shopping at the hypermarket versus the sundry shop. If you are not teaching, you may request
to share the data of your classmates who are teachers. However, you must do your own analysis.
Using the the Error Analysis method, analyse the subject-verb agreement in all the sentences in the
essays written by your students.
Part 2
(a)
Download a journal article on the topic of subject-verb agreement from OUMs library
database and REVIEW it. The review must be included in your paper, under the heading of
Literature Review (see guide below!)
(b)

Report the findings in a well written paper. In your report you should include a discussion
on Subject-verb Agreement (SVA), particularly in the English language; a frequency count
of the correct and incorrect uses of SVA; a discussion and explanation of the your findings.
You may base your explanation on the level of proficiency of the student. This would mean
that you have to mark the papers and grade them according to levels (A, B, C, D, etc).
However, the presentation of results and discussion will be left to your discretion.
(You may read Ch 5 for further information on the subject.)

NOTE: Your paper should consist of an appropriate introduction, brief literature review and
conclusion for your paper. The marking scheme is attached to this paper to guide you in your
writing.

GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS

Marks will be allocated as follows (Note: you may use these headings as your own headings in the
paper):

You must also state why the article is relevant to your topic ie why are
you reading them? How do they contribute to your topic? How would
your work fit into the current research?
Definition of terms
In this section, you must define/ explain SVA and illustrate with sufficient
examples.
Description of Data Collection
--provide a brief description of data collection
--provide justification of methods of data collection
--state any difficulties you encountered during the data collection (this
forms the limitation of your study)
Presentation of the results of the findings: use numbers and tables for the
descriptive data.
