EDITORIAL
by V. Forti
Group EHS Director

EHS is the acronym by which the World identifies the area

Environment (Environment), Health (Health), Safety (Safety).
The new newsletter wants to promote activities and
information exchange on these themes within the Group.
The Beltrame Group has always focused on sustainable
development and the search for continuous improvement as
its core values. These have as pre-requisites the protection
of man and the environment, thereby guaranteeing the
rights of future generations.
With this periodic appointment we want to present programs,
EHS projects and action plan for continuous improvement.
This new channel of communication will not be one-way.
All readers are invited to participate, sending their ideas,
contributions, requests.
The road improvement is defined, we can working together
and achieve the excellence in EHS.
Excellence in EHS also means operational excellence, if we
become excellent in EHS we can face any challenge in future.
Have a nice reading!

SAFETY
RESULTS 2014

Despite our efforts, the number of industrial accidents

recorded in 2014 serves as a timely reminder that the
safety battle is far to be won.
Whilst zero risk cannot be achieved, experience shows
that prevention reduces risk significantly and that all
accidents can be avoided.
This is a matter of ethics and moral responsibility
but it is also one of performance since there can be no
operational performance without safety in the workplace.
Therefore, the sole objective underpinning our actions
must be a strong reduction of industrial accidents.

(-62%).
During 2014 in the group there were 104 accidents with
lost work days, 38 days lost without injuries. The LTIFR
(number of LTI per million hours worked) was 29.75.
The severity rate was 0.69 (ratio of lost days and hours
worked multiplied by 1000).

NEW EHS GROUP

STANDARD

In order to improve the management of EHS themes and

improve the EHS management as corporate priority, the
Company has launched several procedures at the Group
level (EHS Group Standard).
Between late 2014 and early 2015 were launched the
following Standard:
Standard Reporting and investigating: each accident
is notified within 24 hours from the occurrence, within
30 days root cause analysis and corrective action plans
put in place are widespread within the Group.

FIRST EHS
MEETING

February 27 was held in Vicenza the first meeting

between the leaders of the EHS function of the various
Group companies.
Many topics were treated during the meeting: presentation
of the new organization of the Group for the EHS, goals
and ambitions for 2015, presentation of significant
accidents and incidents, presentation of the new standard
on the 5s, certification status of the management system
(OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001).

Standard Mobile Equipment: mobile equipment (e.g.

mechanical shovel, forklifts) are an objective risk that
must be managed with a specific risk assessment,
with competent and qualified operators, with suitable
appliance and compliance with standards of conduct.

Standard on Housekeeping - 5s: the application of the

methodology 5s is essential to create the conditions for
business improvement and optimize the management
of EHS in the company. Order and cleanliness are the
basis for preventing injuries (e.g. reduced risk of slip,
trip and fall) and improve environmental management
(e.g. waste separation).
In the coming months will be launched other standard
safety (WAH - work at height, Contractors safety
management) and environmental management (reporting
of environmental KPI).

SLAG EXPLOSION
in sgf

An explosion during the unloading phase of the slag

from EAF furnace in the dedicated area, occurred at the
Steelworks in Gerlafingen (Switzerland) on July 12, 2014.
The explosion was caused by the contact of the slag
(incandescent material) with a waterdue to heavy rains
and the rise of the groundwater level.
The explosion caused the projection of big pieces of
material in the surrounding area within a radius of about
200 meters.
Fortunately no one was injured in the event (happened at
4 am).
The site has launched several initiatives to improve the
safety and the prevention of this risk.
The reaction between hot material (liquid steel, slag)
and water is one of the typical risks associated with the
production process and it is managed with numerous
systems of prevention and protection across the Group
Sites.

FIRE BRIGADE
VISIT IN VICENZA

In December, there was the second visit of the Fire

Department of the Provincial Command to the Vicenza
plant. This initiative, launched in 2012, is strongly
supported by the Fire Department and the Executive
Board of AFV in order to provide an overview of the
collaborative processing, production processes and risks
of the plant, aimed at improving safety and to ensure
the effectiveness of an intervention in the event of an
emergency at the site.

The event, which lasted two days, was attended by

technicians of the company AFV Beltrame, the qualified
expert in radiation protection, Dr. A. Cianchi, and a score
between team leaders experts (CQE), brigade coordinators
(VC) and Technical Officers of the Fire Department.
The day was divided into two phases: the first, more
didactic, has involved the Fire Department in the
classroom for the presentation of the production process,
the radioactive sources in the scrap, explosion risks,
and the emergency plan of the plant; the second, more
operational, in which the team has moved into the field
for the identification of the main centers of danger from
the point of view of confined spaces, risk of explosion
and fire prevention.
During the activity was reaffirmed the modus
operandi of Beltrame, aims to integrate safety into the
processmanagement, allowing parallel performance
optimization of production and the adoption of effective
preventive measures.
