The Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center partners with several organizations to help students
succeed.
HPVEC Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) Program Accredited by the National Institute for
Metalworking Skills (NIMS)
On Thursday, October 13, 2011, Wright College-Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center became the first
post-secondary institution in the City of Chicago and the fourth in the State of Illinois to be accredited by the
National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) for its Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) program. This
industry standard accreditation recognizes that the CNC program at Wright-HPVEC meets or exceeds nationally
established standards for excellence in metalworking training. The accreditation is renewable every five years.
The accreditation audit took place July 11 and 12, 2011. It included an inspection of the programs CNC machine
shop and a series of interviews with students, instructors, administrators, program advisory committee members
and local employers. Wright-HPVECs employer and community based organization partners have supported the
Centers drive toward this accreditation and see the value it adds to the program and to the students who earn
NIMS credentials as they complete the program and enter the workforce with a competitive edge. These
credentials are a tangible validation that an individual possesses the skills sets necessary for gainful employment in
manufacturing.

Skills Programs
Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) and Electric/Electronic Industrial Maintenance (EEIM)
Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center has had a long and fruitful partnership with Instituto del Progreso Latino
and Erie Neighborhood House with regards to manufacturing programs. Their manufacturing bridge programs
provide students with a short-term pathway to employment through contextualized math and English at the partner
organizations, and basic manufacturing and initial credentialing at HPVEC, while also providing them with the
opportunity to complete the Advanced Certificate programs in CNC and EEIM with a solid foundation.
Manufacturing Works, an organization that works closely with Instituto del Progreso Latino and with HPVEC, assists
in placing students completing the CNC and EEIM programs in internships or jobs. Paid internships for students in
the Centers manufacturing programs have been made possible in part by the Illinois Board of Higher Education
Cooperative Work Study Grant.
CIMA Technology Center
The CIMA Technology Center is the materialization of a vision of our communitys leadership, and it has focused on
technology. The most notable program under this initiative is the A+ Certification. In order to better prepare
students for the industry, a hands-on computer refurbishing component has been added, under the direction of the
Digital Workforce Education Society.
Dual Enrollment
HPVEC continues to collaborate with area high schools to give students the opportunity to attend college credit
classes in their junior and senior years of high school. HPVEC has continued its strong partnerships with ASPIRAs
three local high schools, Mirta Ramirez Computer Science High School, Early College, and Antonia Pantojas, and
with Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School; more than one hundred students from these high schools have already
successfully completed college credit classes in English and Math, giving these talented high school students an
accelerated start in college.
Other Partnerships
HPVEC also takes pride in its active and highly productive collaborations with community based organizations and
individuals. These collaborations have helped us to develop and provide innovative educational and training
programs to members of the community and will continue to do so for years to come.
