Introduction
The impact of EU legislation
In this Advanced Studies programme you will study the impact of EU
legislation on government and enterprises in a global economy. In this
way, you will gain insight into its repercussions on, and interaction
with, other international institutions, in particular the World Trade
Organisation. We will focus on the areas where the impact of the EU
is the strongest.
Our programme is unique in its clearly defined focus on the
interaction of international, European and national law. In addition,
we ensure that you develop both academic and professional
competences. Specific attention is paid, therefore, to professional
applications, particularly through assignments and teaching
methods.

Programme
The European and International business law Advanced Studies
programme is offered at Leiden Law Facultys Europa Institute.
Courses are taught by expert staff with an international reputation
as well as by guest lecturers who hold senior positions with legal
firms, international courts or organisations.
The Advanced Master of Laws teaching is founded on the Law
Schools excellent research programme Securing the Rule of Law in
a World of Multi-level Jurisdiction.
Courses offered
In the programme, you will be required to complete eight courses, to
do work on the European Law Moot Court, and to write a thesis. The
courses are:

The internal Market and Harmonisation
Corporate and Financial Law
European and International Intellectual Property Law
WTO and Investment Law
European Competition Law
International Arbitration
Special features
As a student of the advanced masters European and International
Business Law, you will benefit from:
the possibility to follow one course from one of the Leiden
Law Schools other Masters of Laws Advanced Studies
programmes (excluding International Tax Law) in addition to
the core curriculum. Consultation with the Programme
Director is required;
the Europa institutes excellent library, as well as the library of
the nearby Peace Palace (The Hague), which houses one of
Extra activities
The annual European Law Moot Court Competition, in which
Leiden law teams participate;
the opportunity to become a research fellow with the LEAC
(the Leiden Centre for Legal and Comparative Studies of the
East African Community), which is affiliated with the Europa
Institute;
the ELSA Moot Court, the most renowned competition in the
field of WTO law;
the opportunity to participate in the Winter School in
Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A School). This is a 20-hour
intensive course designed to complement the basic course of
EU Company Law.
Full-time or part-time
The programme is offered full-time (one academic year) and parttime (two academic years), both with daytime classes. Part-time
students are offered the same facilities and courses as full-time
students. Each course is concluded with an examination. Students are
expected to make regular contributions throughout the courses and
are required to prepare oral and written presentations. For nonEuropean students, the part-time option is not possible because of
visa requirements.

professional national and international positions.
Career options
Career guidance
Leiden Law School offers career activities to all its Advanced Studies
students in the form of international CV writing workshops and
seminars on establishing global careers. This faculty-level career
assistance is supported by the student career service of Leiden
University, which offers a wide range of services including
communication training, CV checks and workshops on job
application techniques.
After graduation, non-European students have the opportunity to
stay for an extra year while looking for job. They can apply for a
residence permit the Orientation Year for Graduates Seeking
Employment (Zoekjaar afgestudeerde) scheme.
Staff
The courses at the Advanced Masters European and International
Business Law are taught by lecturers who have earned a national and
international reputation in their field.
In addition to their work at the Europa Institute, they are members
of academic institutes such as the Max Planck Institutes Advisory
Council, the Academic Committee of the European Association of
Tax Law Professors, the Competition Law Group, the Centre for
European Legal Studies, the University of Cambridge, and the Society
for Advanced Legal Studies.

Organisation
The Advanced Studies programme European and International
Business Law is offered by the Europa Institute. Established in 1957,
this is the oldest institution of its kind devoted to the study of

The Europa Institute forms an integral part of the Leiden Law
School. It co-operates with many academic institutions, both within
and outside Leiden University. As a student you will benefit from the
Europa Institutes impressive network, which includes relations with
national and international organisations, both private and public,
within and outside Europe.

Entry requirements
Notice: This programme is now operating a waiting list. Due to
oversubscription, applicants are now being placed on a waiting list.
Applicants who have applied on or after 28 March 2015 will
automatically be placed on the waiting list. Should places become
available which is possible after scholarships have been announced
then applicants will be notified in order of the waiting list.
In order to be considered for the European and International
Business Law advanced masters programme, you should:
have a full degree in Law (offering access to legal practice in
the country where it was obtained) from a recognised
University / Law School
present two letters of recommendation from current or
previous professors and/or employers
have a keen interest in matters of European and International
Business Law and the (legal) implications thereof, illustrated
by a letter of motivation
show documented evidence of relevant (work) experience, i.e.,
working for a law firm, internships etc. this information
should be include in your curriculum vitae
have proven English-language proficiency, validated through a
TOEFL test (600 paper-based/250 computer-based or 100
Internet-based) or IELTS test (7.0), evidenced by an
appropriate test, occasionally complemented by a telephone
interview. This requirement does not apply if you have:
completed your education in Canada (except Quebec),
USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia, or
an International Baccalaureate
a minimum of 6.0 band score IELTS or 20 band score Toefl is
required in all band scores. Applicants with a lower band score
in one or more areas may be asked to take part in a presessional English programme prior to entry.
Students who want to start in September and do not meet this level
of English but have a minimum score of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, may
be offered a place on the programme on the condition that they
attend a two-month pre-sessional English course at Leiden
University.
For the February intake no pre-sessional English courses are offered.
