by the dreadful disease cancer.
Good Morning Miss Henry, fellow classmates. I stand before you today to present on the theme
of my portfolio "Cancer Research", more specifically "The Advances Guyana has made in its
Cancer Research during the years 2010 to 2014.
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year approximately 14 million
people are diagnosed with cancer globally, and approximately 8 million people die from the
disease. Cancer is the third leading cause of mortality in Guyana with prostate, breast, lung and
cervical cancers being the most prevalent ones affecting the Guyanese population. According to a
ministry of health report, between the years 2004 to 2011 there were approximately 3400 deaths
that were as a result of cancer.
In order to analyze Guyana's advances in cancer research, in my study I looked at the technology
Guyana has in the cancer department of its public hospital. I also examined the qualification of
the hospital staff member working in the cancer department and their number of years of
experience in the field. I also looked at the Government of Guyana's input in cancer research.
Information for this study was obtained from both primary and secondary sources. My primary
source consisted of an interview I conducted with the Manager of the Cancer Institute of Guyana.
During this interview I asked 10 questions and only received answers for six of those questions.
My secondary sources consisted mainly of articles from Guyanese newspapers and a PowerPoint
presentation
The information I obtained from both my primary source and secondary sources can
be deemed both credible and valid since newspaper articles have to undergo
several processes of reviewing and editing before they are published to ensure that
the information they are portraying has some truth to it. Also several of the
newspapers articles I looked at were saying the same things about cancer research
in Guyana. The PowerPoint presentation, also used as a source of information, was
written by doctor who works at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and as
such he is most capable of providing information of the diseases affecting the
Guyanese population. The information obtained from the primary source is also
reliable since the interviewee is the manager of an institution which deals
specifically with cancer screening and treatment and as such she is perfectly
capable of providing information on the technology, staff, etc. in the cancer
department at GPHC.
Some problems I encountered while trying to obtain information for this study was
the lack of statistical data such as the number of persons diagnosed with cancer in
the years 2010 to 2015, etc. I was hoping that I could obtain this information from

Cancer Institute of Guyana but unfortunately they do not carry such data. They
referred me to another institution but unfortunately I was unable to locate this
place. This leads me the other problem I incurred while trying to obtain information
for this study and that is that is data collection was time consuming.
From my study I was able to find to find that Guyana
