THE LIBERATION OF ROME, JUNE 4, 1944, WORLD WAR II
WHO: Representative Cortney Niland, District #8 joined by invited dignitaries
Congressman Beto ORourke, Mayor Oscar Leeser, City Rep. Carl Robinson, City Manager Tommy Gonzalez, Col. (RET) Cary Westin-Economic Development Managing Director, Juan Cabrera, Superintendent, EPISD, Dr. Michael Warmack, Bowie High School Principal, Bowie High School Alumni Association, Arnulfo Hernandez, Jr., and Samuel Ortega, authors of the soon-to-be released book, Toughest Chicano Soldiers of WWII: Company E of El Paso, Texas. WHAT: The following two events are scheduled to honor and commemorate the fallen and surviving members of Rifle Company E, widows, and family members: (1) a presentation proclaiming the role of Rifle Company E in the liberation of Rome during World War II, as well as a wreath placing ceremony; (2) a Meet and Greet Rifle Company E veterans where the documentary The Men of Company E will be screened, followed by a panel discussion and ending with a punch and cookies reception in the cafeteria. The general public is invited to attend both events at no charge. WHEN: Proclamation and wreath placing cermony on June 4, 2015, 10:00 a.m.; and a Company E Meet and Greet, June 4, 2015, 6:00p-9:00p. WHERE: Proclamation presentation and wreath placing ceremony at A Tribute to Company E Memorial Monument at Delta Park, near the Chalio Acosta Senior Center, Outdoor Park Space, 4321 Delta Dr.; and Meet and Greet Company E veterans at Bowie High School, Fine Arts Building.

PROCLAMATION RIFLE COMPANY E OF EL PASO, TEXAS DAY WHEREAS, Rifle Company E (141st U.S. Army Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 36th Texas Division, 5TH Army) was the only all-Mexican American unit during World War II, many of its members came from El Segundo Barrio and Bowie High School; WHEREAS, Company E played a significant role in the liberation of Rome, Italy, from Nazi Germany occupation, on June 4, 1944; WHEREAS, During the Italian Campaign, Company E, engaged Nazi enemy during the battles for Salerno, San Pietro, Monte Cassino, and Velletri; then swept across Southern France supporting ultimate victory over Nazi Germany; WHEREAS, during the crossing of Rapido River and the battle of San Angelo on January 22, 1944, Company E sustained seventy-eight percent casualties, including 114 men who were Killed in Action, wounded, or captured as Prisoners of War; WHEREAS, the men of Company E displayed heroism above and beyond the call of duty, immortalized forever in the Great Pantheon of true American heroes, with their names etched in A Tribute to Company E Memorial Monument at Delta Park, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED: by the Mayor and Council of the City of El Paso, on behalf of a grateful City, State and Nation do hereby declare June 4th to be in El Paso, Texas RIFLE COMPANY E (141st U.S. Army Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 36th Texas Division, 5TH Army) DAY
