Lesson : Bookworms
Type of lesson: vocabulary practice and building integrated skills;
Lesson aims:

to recognize types of books;

to talk about different types of books;

to discover the use and importance of reading;

to express personal opinion about certain books;

to write short paragraphs on a given topic.

Subsidiary aims:

to practise group work;

to practice language in a particular context;

to create mini-projects.

Skills: speaking, reading, writing.


Teaching aids: the textbook, handouts, pupils notebooks, the blackboard, A3 sheets of paper,
coloured pencils.
Methods: brainstorming, conversation, reading, explanation, elicitation, description, discovery.
Modes of interaction: teacher-students, teacher-students, student-student.
Anticipated problems:

Students could become noisy when working in groups;


Some students may not understand the task given by the teacher.

Possible solutions:

The teacher may ask students to keep their voice down while working in group and focus

on their task;
The teacher may repeat or rephrase the task so that all students will understand it; if
students still do not understand the oral commands or the tasks, they will be translated into
Romanian.

Feedback:
Teacher and students provide continuous feed back through observation. The teacher
checks that the students complete the tasks entirely and correctly at any stage of the lesson, she
gives extra explanations whenever necessary, she monitors certain students in order to prevent
possible problems.

WARM-UP

Activity 1,checking the homework


Teacher greets the students and they greet back. Teacher asks for absentees. Students on
duty name the absentees if there are any.
Teacher checks up homework: students had to read a poem and write a short paragraph
about what the message of the poem was, in their opinion.
Procedure: Students read the poem, then teacher asks some of them to share their
opinions about the message of the poem. Teacher makes error- correction, if necessary.

PRESENTATION
Activity 2, warm-up
Aim: To familiarize students with the new lesson;
Procedure: Teacher writes the word reading on the blackboard and asks students to say what the
word makes them think about. Teacher leads a discussion about book and reading. The best ideas
are written down. Teacher aims at making students aware of the importance of reading. Teacher
announces the title of the new lesson, Bookworms. Teacher writes the word on the blackboard
and gives students the dictionary definition of the word.

Activity 3, introducing types of books


Aim: To introduce the vocabulary for the lesson
Procedure: Teacher gives students worksheets. Students are asked to read the words and to
match them with their definitions.

Materials: worksheets;
Class management: whole class activity;
Timing: 3 minutes

PRACTICE
Activity 4, identifying types of books
Aim: To use vocabulary introduced in the previous activity;
Procedure: Students read the sentences in exercise 1, page 46, about what some people like and
recommend what each of them should read, choosing rot e given titles. Students rite their answers
on the blackboard and copy them into their notebooks.

Activity 5, information cards


Aim: To be able to name titles of books, authors and main characters;

Procedure: Students are asked to fill in a personal information card which is printed on a coloured
piece of paper.
Teacher asks students to read their cards in front of the class and then to stick them on the board.

Activity 6, An interview with Timmy


Aims: To identify the main information about a book;
Procedure: Students read the interview at page 48. Teacher emphasizes the main points one
should refer to when speaking or writing about a book, about its characters and about the story.

Materials: textbook, blackboard, pupils notebooks;
Class management: whole class activity;
Timing: 5 minutes

PRODUCTION
Activity 7, My story
Aims: To use knowledge acquired during the class
Procedure: Students are organised in five-member groups and are given different tasks, as they
are at different proficiency levels.
Some students are given extracts that they have to sort out and then order chronologically so that
they make up a story; finally they have to choose a title for it and to draw the picture of the main
character. Students go in front of the class and present their poster.

Some other students are asked to write an interview with the character of a book, asking questions
about the writer, the title, the events the characters are involved in. Students go in front of the class
and act out their interviews.

Activity 8, Evaluating and assigning homework


Teacher makes remarks on students activity during the English class and marks some students
with grades.
Teacher announces homework: students have to write a brief sum-up of their favourite
book, in no more than ten sentences.
Timing: 2 minutes
