BEC Vantage - Diagnostic test

This test gauges the level of preparedness of candidates for the BEC Vantage exam. Allow 45 minutes.
READING (2 parts - allow 15 minutes)
Part One
Read the article about business meetings. Choose the correct word (A, B, C or D) to fill each gap.
What are meetings really for?
We have all come out of a meeting thinking, What was that all about? or What a (0) ______ of time that
was! Worse than that, many of us often have these thoughts during the meeting, in which (1) _________
we either start daydreaming or we start thinking about other jobs that we have to do. Some companies
have even (2) __________ laptops and Blackberries from meetings so that participants wont be tempted
to (3) _______ with other work.
So whats the answer? How do we ensure that meetings are useful and (4) __________ ? The first thing
is to have very clear (5) __________. Is the aim of the meeting to collect ideas? Is it to present new
information? Is it to (6) _________ a decision on something? Or is it, as is often the case, to get people
to support a decision that has already been taken?
The next (7) ________ is to ask yourself if a meeting is the best way to achieve this aim. It could be just
as effective, and probably a lot cheaper, to communicate the message by e-mail or just by calling the
various people (8) __________ .
If you do decide to call people together for a meeting, make sure of two more things: first, that, before
the meeting, you circulate the (9) __________ , so that everyone can be prepared; and secondly that
during the meeting people speak (10) __________ and in clear, plain language.

Part Two
Read the article about organisations. In most of the lines 11 15 there is one extra word. It is either
grammatically incorrect or does not fit in with the meaning of the text. Some lines, however, are correct.
If a line is correct, write CORRECT next to it.
If it is incorrect, write the unnecessary word next to it.

Organisations are rather like families. Some have leaders (parents) who are very
well suited to the job of getting the best out from their employees (children). In
other cases those responsible have no idea how to manage a group of people,
because their own leaders did not never provide a good model for them to follow.
So bad habits and practices can be passed on from one generation to the another.
That is why the board of directors, if a company is not performing well, it will
replace all of senior management in an attempt to change the culture of the
organisation.
