Defuzzificationistheprocessofproducingaquantifiableresultinfuzzylogic,givenfuzzysetsandcorrespondingmembershipdegrees.Itistypically
neededinfuzzycontrolsystems.Thesewillhaveanumberofrulesthattransformanumberofvariablesintoafuzzyresult,thatis,theresultis
describedintermsofmembershipinfuzzysets.Forexample,rulesdesignedtodecidehowmuchpressuretoapplymightresultin"DecreasePressure
(15%),MaintainPressure(34%),IncreasePressure(72%)".Defuzzificationisinterpretingthemembershipdegreesofthefuzzysetsintoaspecific
decisionorrealvalue.
Thesimplestbutleastusefuldefuzzificationmethodistochoosethesetwiththehighestmembership,inthiscase,"IncreasePressure"sinceithasa72%
membership,andignoretheothers,andconvertthis72%tosomenumber.Theproblemwiththisapproachisthatitlosesinformation.Therulesthat
calledfordecreasingormaintainingpressuremightaswellhavenotbeenthereinthiscase.
Acommonandusefuldefuzzificationtechniqueiscenterofgravity.First,theresultsoftherulesmustbeaddedtogetherinsomeway.Themosttypical
fuzzysetmembershipfunctionhasthegraphofatriangle.Now,ifthistriangleweretobecutinastraighthorizontallinesomewherebetweenthetop
andthebottom,andthetopportionweretoberemoved,theremainingportionformsatrapezoid.Thefirststepofdefuzzificationtypically"chopsoff"
partsofthegraphstoformtrapezoids(orothershapesiftheinitialshapeswerenottriangles).Forexample,iftheoutputhas"DecreasePressure(15%)",
thenthistrianglewillbecut15%thewayupfromthebottom.Inthemostcommontechnique,allofthesetrapezoidsarethensuperimposedoneupon
another,formingasinglegeometricshape.Then,thecentroidofthisshape,calledthefuzzycentroid,iscalculated.Thexcoordinateofthecentroidisthe
defuzzifiedvalue.
