Many people believe that international tourism is a bad thing for their country. What
are the reasons? Solutions to change negative attitudes?
Undeniably, tourism, AN INDUSTRY WITHOUT CHIMNEY, has brought economic
benefits to host destinations from travel related services. However, there is a
mounting concern that worldwide travel may lead to degradation in local environment
and SOCIAL UNRESTS when many crowds of foreign backpackers flock to a host
nation. In my opinion, this concern is not quite groundless.
Indeed, pollution caused by travelling globally can be seen in plenty of well-known
natural sites. Take, for example, Mississippi, which is the second largest river of the
North America. Apart from a rise in harmful chemical nutrients, another reason as to
why this river is heavily contaminated is due to the increasing number of
OUTBOUND TOURISTS. When visiting here, many would intend to illegally exploit
its ecological traits for individual benefits and thereby ruining the beauty of this site.
The other negative impacts might be traffic congestion and sex trade. As a
SEASONAL INDUSTRY, the number of foreign travellers often increases
dramatically on special festivals causing traffic jam in main routes. Sexual demand,
though just human instinct, may also result in such social evils as HUMAN
TRAFFICKING or sex crime all over the globe.
To alleviate these problems, there is a recommendation that governmental bodies
should strictly penalize visitors who BREACH ENVIRONMENTAL RULES. From
my perspective, this solution, however, seems not to be ingenious because tourists
might think we are not at all hospitable. Instead of this, the locals should instruct them
how to keep host nations surroundings healthy. Also, building more public transport
to reduce traffic jam and LEGALIZING RED-LIGHT DISTRICTS exclusively for
foreigners are well worth referential solutions.
In conclusion, like other key sectors, international tourism may contribute to a decline
in the quality of local life. Therefore, municipal and central authorities need to cooperate mutually for SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT.
