System Introduction
Overview
Introduction

Short Message Service Center (SMSC) sends, receive, forwards,

and stores short messages. SMSC enables short messages
transmission between GSM network subscribers, or between
GSM network and CDMA network subscribers.
SMSC includes IW/GMSC, Short Message Peer to Peer (SMPP)
agent, service processor, Operation and Maintenance Module
(OMM) and Call Data Record (CDR) server. ESME is a physical
entity that can send and receive short messages. Service
processor receives, forwards, stores, and process short
messages received either by External Short Message Entity
(ESME) or Mobile Station (MS).
Service processor connects with ESME via SMPP agent using
SMPP protocol, and with PLMN via Signaling System 7 (SS7).
SMSC internal modules are interconnected via TCP/IP.

System Features
Overview

This topic briefly describes ZXG10-SC system features.

Advanced Design
ZXG10-SC adopts latest and optimized system designs in terms
of hardware, software, and architecture. It uses large scale

integrated circuits to reduce number of separated units and

power consumption. This incredibly increases system reliability.
It adopts layered and modular structure. It adopts load sharing
structure, so once a module gets problem other automatically
takes over services.
Open Standards Support
ZXG10-SC supports a variety of protocols for inter modular
communication. Some of interfaces used in ZXG10-SC are
described in Table 5.

High Availability
ZXG10-SC adopts modular and active/standby architecture. It
ensures high availability of system. If one module gets down
other takes over services. Advanced disk array technology
ensures safety and reliability of stored data. Communication
network between nodes adopts dual network redundant design.
It adopts redundant backup of network card and HUB. It controls
down time caused by single-system faults.
Services and Functions
ZXG10-SC system supports basic short message functions,
extended message functions, SMPP protocols, abundant ESME
solution, and virtual SC functions.
Multiple System Platform Support
ZXG10-SC supports various types of hardware platforms and
operating systems. Hardware platform and operating system
used in ZXG10-SC system are described in Table 6.

Hardware Structure
SC hardware structure consists of IW/GMSC, service processing
module, Operation Maintenance Module (OMM), Billing Module
(BM), Short Message Peer to Peer (SMPP) Agent, junk short
message monitoring module, and short message query module.
Each module adopts multi-level modularized design. Various

components are connected via Fast Ethernet (FE) and

communicate through TCP/IP. Dual networks are used to ensure
system reliability. ZXG10-SC hardware structure is described as
Figure 1.
F IGURE 1

IW/GMSC
module

ZXG10-SC

IW/GMSC is consists of one or multiple modules for SS7

processing. It provides interface between SC and functional
entities such as HLR/AUC, MSC/VLR and SGSN. Its hardware is

based on ZXJ10 switching platform. Each module can provide 48

SS7 links, and number of modules can be configured flexibly
according to practical requirements.
Service

Processing
Module

Database

Module

Service processing module is composed of one or multiple

service processing sub modules in mode of multi module load
sharing. Each module adopts dual system structure, disk array,
and cluster technology to enhance system reliability. Service
processing module is short message service processing center. It
is responsible for receiving, storing and forwarding short
messages submitted by SME and MS.
To gain higher short message processing capability, database
(DB) module can be separated from service processing module.
Independent service DB module can be used to conduct
operations such as storage and short messages query.

Operation
maintenance
module

Operation and maintenance module (OMM) consists of OMM

server, agent station, and maintenance station connected to
OMM server. Agent station and maintenance station provide
man-machine operation platform. System operators can monitor
system, detect and remove faults, manage users, and handle
services remotely.

SMPP Agent
module

SMPP agent module provides standard external SMPP protocol to

connect SC with ESME. It converts internal messages and
normal messages. Each ESME accesses SC just via SMPP module.

Billing Module

Junk SM
Monitoring
Module

Short Message
Query Module

Billing Module (BM) is responsible for generating short message

charging bills. ZXG10-SC generates three kinds of bills, MO, MT
and ACK.BM adopts Cluster technology and shared disk array
mode. It connects with SC via DDN/X.25 network and complies
with FTP/FTAM protocol.
Junk Short
Message (SM) monitoring
module adopts
client/server architecture. Server module monitors and collects
suspected short messages. Client module provides monitoring
functions such as short message analyze, query, and handle
suspected short messages, and suspected subscribers.
Short Message (SM) query module adopts client/server
architecture. Server module receives short messages originated
by service processor and sets up index information for it. Client
module queries system and server module searches short
message index and provides information.

Software Structure
Service Center (SC) software structure consists of operation
support module, SS7 Module, SMPP access module, DB Module,
Service Processing Module, Junk SM Monitoring Module, and SM
Query Module. ZXG10-SC software structure is described as
Figure 2.

Module

SS7 Module

SMPP access
module

SS7 module connects SC with PLMN. SS7 is used between

service processor and IW/GMSC.
SMPP Agent module connects SC with ESME. It converts SMPP
normal messages into internal messages and vice versa.

DB Module

Database module is for loads and accesses system configuration.

ZXG10-SC adopts memory database technology. Memory
database technology reduces processing time.

Service

Service processing module is core component of ZXG10-SC. It is

used for MAP access processing, SMPP access processing, and
short message service processing. MAP access is used to
exchange signaling between SC and GSM network providing a
short message receiving and transmitting channel for Mobile
Station (MS). SMPP access is used to connect ESME and SC,
providing manual and auto stations with a channel for receiving
and transmitting short messages. Short message service
processing refers to functions such as receiving, storing,
forwarding and repeated attempts to forward short messages.

Operation and
maintenance
module

ZXG10-SC provides operation and maintenance functions such

as subscriber management, system configuration, system
monitoring, and fault management. It provides interface with
Operation and Maintenance Center (OMC) to monitor GSM
network system.

Junk SM
Monitoring
Module

Junk short message (SM) monitoring module restricts mobile

subscribers from sending illegal short messages. It monitors
frequency and keywords of mobile short messages. It makes a
list for suspected subscribers and restricts from accessing
system.

SM Query
Module

Short Message (SM) query module queries and deletes short

messages according to calling and called subscribers.
