Conserve time and water while growing beautiful, productive gardens

Reduce your workload, increase productivity and be water wise, whether you are
planning, planting or already harvesting produce or enjoying beautiful floral displays from
your garden.
Container gardeners may want to invest in
self-watering pots. These containers have builtin reservoirs to reduce watering frequency.
Commercial and homemade self-watering
devices can also reduce watering frequency.
Just make sure to test their effectiveness before
leaving town. Or consider a one-time investment in a drip irrigation system designed for
container gardens.
Drip irrigation and soaker hoses are also
a great way to water in-ground plantings.
These irrigation systems apply the water
directly to the soil which reduces water lost to
overspray, evaporation and runoff. They also
reduce the risk and spread of disease by preventing water from settling on the leaves of the
plants.
Opt for a micro irrigation system if your
water has a high mineral content. These minerals can build up and clog soaker hoses.
Micro irrigation systems experience fewer
problems and the nozzles can be cleaned to
prevent clogs. Because the nozzles can be
clipped onto stakes, tomato towers or other
supports, this system makes it easy to deliver
water right to the plants.
Raised bed gardens will also benefit from
irrigation systems. Elevated gardens often dry
out more quickly than their in-ground counter-

parts and need more frequent watering.

Some, like the Raised Bed Snip-n-Drip soaker
system (gardeners.com), are easy to assemble and allow you to water when needed.
Further save time by using preformed corners
with built-in spigots when constructing raised
beds. Simply slide the boards into the metal
corner pieces to create the raised bed. Some
corner systems, like Aquacorner, have built-in
spigots to make irrigation even simpler.
Correctly installed irrigation systems can
help conserve water by ensuring you water
properly and only when needed. Plus, using
a timer and an irrigation system allows you to
apply water at the best time for the plants. Just
set the timer for early in the morning - when
less water is lost to evaporation - and the
plants will be watered even if you are not
home.
Always water thoroughly and only as
needed to encourage plants to develop deep
root systems that are more drought-tolerant.
Be sure to avoid high nitrogen, fast release fertilizers that promote lush succulent growth
which needs more frequent watering.
Further conserve water and time spent
watering by grouping moisture-loving plants
together. You can provide needed water more
efficiently and avoid overwatering nearby
drought-tolerant plants.
And remember to mulch your garden. A
thin layer of shredded leaves, evergreen needles or other organic matter helps conserve
moisture and reduces erosion. As the mulch
breaks down, it helps improve the soil, while
decreasing its water needs.

from watering, while continuing to enjoy beautiful and productive gardens.

from the Executive of the United States,
all slaves are free. This involves an
absolute equality of personal rights and
rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection
heretofore existing between them
becomes that between employer and
hired labor. The freedmen are advised to
remain quietly at their present homes and
work for wages. They are informed that
they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere."

Interest and participation fell away during the late 1950's and 1960's as attention focused on expansion of freedom for
African-Americans. In the 1970's
Juneteenth revived in some communities.

Large celebrations on June 19 began
in 1866 and continued regularly into the
early 20th century. The AfricanAmericans treated this day like the Fourth
of July and the celebrations contained
similar events. In the early days, the celebration included a prayer service, speakers with inspirational messages, reading
of the emancipation proclamation, stories from former slaves, food, red soda
water, games, rodeos and dances.
The celebration of June 19 as emancipation day spread from Texas to the
neighboring states of Louisiana,
Arkansas and Oklahoma. It has also
appeared in Alabama, Florida, and
California as African-American Texans
migrated.
In many parts of Texas, ex-slaves purchased land, or "emancipation grounds,"
for the Juneteenth gathering. Examples
include: Emancipation Park in Houston,
purchased in 1872; what is now Booker
T. Washington Park in Mexia; and
Emancipation park in East Austin.
Celebration of Juneteenth declined

For example, in Austin the Juneteenth celebration returned in 1976 after a 25 year
hiatus.

Summer Solstice returns to Wehr Nature Center

Celebrating the longest day of the
year, visitors to the Summer Solstice
Social will enjoy an evening of smallplate dining and desserts, a silent auction, and the traditional lighting of the
bonfire, Saturday, June 20 from 7-9
p.m. at Wehr Nature Center. The
Nature Center is located in Whitnall
Park at 9701 W. College Ave.
From 7-8:15 p.m., event-goers

may bid on items in the summerthemed silent auction. Garden art and
picnic items are among the donations.
Bid winners will be announced at the
end of the evening.
Throughout the night, guests will
experience traditions of the Summer
Solstice. Visitors may take part in the
practice of making a wish and tossing
a flower onto a lake to carry the wish

home, or, later, when the bonfire is lit,

guests may prepare for the future by
casting herbs into the fire for protection or to ensure a prosperous harvest.
Admission is $15 per person.
Wine or beer tokens may be purchased for $5 each. Parking is included
in
the
admission
fee.
Preregistration is not required; walkins are welcomed.

Greener, safer choices

With an increasing emphasis on preserving the earth, more people than are
ever are going green, and paint and
stain companies are stepping up to the
plate with greener choices. Shop for
eco-friendlier paint and stain, and youll
find endless choices, some of them better
than others. If you are thinking about
painting or staining something in your
home and want to go green, here are
some tips.
Know the culprits. Traditional paint
contains a lot of toxic chemicals, most
notably volatile organic compounds or
VOCs. VOCs pollute the air and can
cause nausea, dizziness, eye irritation,
cancer and heart, lung and kidney damage. Traditional paint also contains
fungicides and biocides, air pollutants
that prevent mildew growth and extend
the life of the paint. Traditional paint contains chemical pigments as well, another
air pollutant. Traditional stain contains
even more air pollutants than paint.
When shopping for paint and stain,
pay attention to the labels. Obviously

offer low VOCs, low fungicides and biocides and natural pigments. The greenest
choices in stain are water based with no
biocides or added dryers.
Exterior paint generally contains
more air pollutants than interior paint. All
exterior paint contains fungicides to prevent mildew growth and biocides to
extend the shelf life. While you wont
find a low-biocide exterior paint, you
can look for one with zinc oxide as the
fungicide and low VOCs.
Interior paint offers better greener
options. Natural paints made from balsam, citrus, minerals and other sources
are ideal, as is milk paint made from
casein and lime. Latex paint featuring
low biocides and low VOCs is also a
good choice. Acrylic paint and recycled
latex paint will also suffice, providing
they have no mercury or lead. You can
also make your own eco-friendly paint
and stain. There are dozens of recipes
online you can follow. The worst, and
potentially the most dangerous, paint
and stain are oil or solvent based. Avoid
these when at all possible.
Greener choices in paint and stain
are available. Do your homework, and
no matter what you select, make sure the
area where you are working is well ventilated. And when its time to discard any
leftover paint or stain, do so properly.
Donate it or take it to a hazardous waste
collection facility. Dont dump it in the
trash, where it will make its way to the
landfill and possibly pollute the groundwater.

SKILLED TRADES

We are seeking a career minded, experienced Mechanical

Technician to join our team. Responsibilities included the installation, service, repair and preventative maintenance of the Corrugator
and Conveyor systems in a state of the art facility. This position is for
2nd shift.
Preferred qualifications include but are not limited to: 2-3 years of
Mechanical Installation & Troubleshooting Experience; operational
knowledge of automated industrial machinery which includes:
motors, servos, drives, relays 3 phase power, communication
devices, industrial/electronic controls and power transmission systems; good understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems;
strong troubleshooting and problem solving ability with practical,
mechanical and electrical aptitude; must be able to read and interpret both electrical and mechanical drawings; ability to work independently in a mature and professional manner; two year technical
degree, certificate or equivalent experience desired. All candidates
must be willing to work any available shift; as well as overtime.
Corrugated background and/or boiler license is a plus, but not
