'Save Our Hospital'
Connolly Services
Must Be Protected
Speaking to people on the doorsteps of Dublin 15
and staff in the corridors of Connolly Hospital,
there is a palpable sense of concern that our local
hospital is going to suffer severe cut-backs as a
result of the economic downturn.

Connolly Hospital has had its budget slashed for

two years running. Wards are being closed. Staff
are being let go. Key services are being cut back
and patients are suffering.

For years, staff and patients at Connolly Hospital have

been told that they must wait for essential new equip-
ment, including a much needed MRI scanner. Any
modern hospital needs modern imaging equipment.

For years now, Connolly Hospital has been made to

wait for a much needed MRI scanner. Local people
have been led to believe that this scanner will become
available only once a private co-located hospital is
built on the same site. At the same time, they waste

for scans.
Patrick Nulty
“This is unacceptable”, said Patrick Nulty, Labour
Party candidate for Mulhuddart, “the government’s
crazy ‘co-location’ scheme must be scrapped.
Patients' welfare should never come second to
investors' interests.”

The HSE has also recently acknowledged that some

doubt may now exist around the financial viability of
co-locating a private hospital on the grounds of
Connolly. According to the HSE, 'there is little doubt
that the current financial markets will make their
funding more difficult'.

The staff at Connolly hospital have worked so hard

over the years to make it a truly world class medical
centre, but they seem to be thwarted at every turn by
our 'do-nothing' Government. We read every day
about the diminishing wealth of the nation, but we
must not lose sight of the importance of protecting
the health of the nation.

More Buses, More Trains, More Often
Poor community planning has left vast swathes
of Dublin 15 poorly served by public transport.
People have no choice but to use their cars and
sit in traffic.

Recent cut-backs in bus services must be

reversed. The rail line serving Ongar, Hansfield
and Littlepace must be fast-tracked. Any
attempts to stall Metro West should be resisted.

I am convinced that many more people would

leave their cars at home if they felt there was a
reliable, accessible public transport alternative.
Not only would this make Dublin 15 a nicer
place to live, it would be a more attractive place
for companies to invest and create jobs.

Management
companies
There has been huge growth in the number of
so-called property management companies in recent
years. While the Government refuses to regulate the
sector, many people are being charged management
fees of up to €2,500 in return for often very poor
standards of service.

People often cannot receive proper invoices, which

not only makes it difficult for people to claim the
tax relief to which they are entitled but raises
concerns about the transparency of these charges.

This is a case of gross exploitation by some

management company directors, developers and
property service agents. The situation is scandalous.
The Government must bring forward legislation
without further delay. On Fingal County Council I
will support the development 'one-stop-shop' to help
people dealing with their management company.
Invest in
Education
Patrick Nulty and the Labour Party are campaigning
for:

● School building projects and upgrades to be fast

tracked in Tyrellstown, Blanchardstown,
Corduff and Phibblestown – to create jobs and
ensure all our children can go to school in a
safe, appropriate and high quality environment.

● Protection of teaching jobs in our schools –

Maintaining class sizes is critical. I believe that
reducing the number of teachers in our schools
is reckless from both a social and economic
perspective.

● Free Education – I believe that education should

be free for all children in Dublin 15 from
pre-school right up to third level.
